I think you should not go pure mutant. Have a mix of the Krogg and have some mutant Krogg in there.

TIME TO GET THIS PROJECT BACK ON TRACK!
I’ve finally decided which project to do for the ‘Armies On Parade’ contest and that is the Kroggs. Of course I will need to replace the pig iron heads with GW parts, but apart from that I plan to get a small force done in time for the deadline on the 8th of Aug. I’m told it will need a centrepiece so I’m going to convert a battlewagon into a mad max style lorry. Should be fun!

TIME FOR SOME BRUTE FORCE
Ever since I started this project I’ve been wondering what I could use to represent nobs, the first concept (the guy with the power armoured trousers) just didn’t match up with the stats. The Forgeworld Renegade Orgyns would have been ideal however I not ready to pay £15 for each squad leader.

So I decided I try build my own, so from much thinking and looking at bits I give you the Krogg Brute!

When I put it together yesterday I didn’t think it would work, but I looked at it this morning and realised that with a bit of greenstuff it could look fantastic. One area that needs work is round the waist as it looks too thin at the moment, maybe add a tatted cloth on top of the dark angels bit or even a large chain round the waist.
Since most of my Nobs are armed with Power Klaws I plan to convert the two handed weapons into crude thunder hammers finally add some shoulder pads and some small bits from the ogre sprue and I’ll have myself a monster. Now just one problem remains…

HOW THE HELL DO I MAKE NOB BIKERS &/OR MEGANOBS WITH THESE SMALL GIANTS?

Not too sure about it atm, would need to see it more fleshed out to pass proper judgement.

For Mad Max inspiration check out GMM's Adepticon Orks here:

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD
Well the brute concept failed miserably, even a good amount of green stuff work it still look liked bits thrown together. So I see three options for Nob models…

1. OGRES TO OGRYNS
Ogres could easily work for my nobs as there are plenty of ‘ogre to orgyn’ conversions for me to be inspired by on the web. As for the upgraded versions which you need to have at least one of these in a competitive ork army I’ve come up with a few ideas…

Nob Bikers have been a right pain as I need something big enough for the ogres to ride in but keep it to a 40mm biker base. Wartrakks was the first idea but those models aren’t that good, creating a passage platform on the rear or side of a bike was the next idea but that had the clear issue of weight distribution.
I eventually came to the idea of constructing a small platform for the ogre to stand on with a driver compartment in front and sandwich it between two ork bikes and then add some link between the rear engines. If it works I can even make it so I can swap out the ogre for a gunner and use them as buggies.

Meganobs are easy. Now exo suits aren’t easy to find in a post-apocalyptic army so I think it’s easier to come up with something to suit the stats more than the model. So I’ll clad the ogres in heavy plated armour similar to the model below, this should represent their save and slow movement nicely. Still thinking of how to add the gun though.

2. WAIT
Dark Eldar Grotesques are soon to be released and I’m thinking of waiting to see what they look like as they maybe better looking for the job than the ogres. However converting them into the bikers and meganobs might be very difficult.

3. KROGG VETERANS
I’ve realised a problem with using ogre and Grotesques models; being that they won’t look good on vehicles, the ogre model’s stance would probably look silly on a fast moving bike, so I thought of perhaps revising my first idea for nobs and make some bad ass looking Krogg Warriors.

I’m thinking of using the FW Iron Armour as it looks crude and something you'd see in fallout 3, so it could easily be converted to suit the Krogg’s overall look, replacing the shoulder pads and using marauder arms with the leather gloves from the berserker sprue also replacing the backpack for some crude power source. Maybe use some space wolf heads and other details.

The advantage of creating nobs this way is it would allow me more freedom with converting them and I can have my nob warriors riding actual bikes which would look better than converting small chariots and buggies.
True the issue was that the model had +1 strength and 2 wounds, so far the best explanation is that warrior has undergone a crude and dangerous enhancement process using several drugs. I could perhaps paint the skin a darker/redder tone to represent them being drugged up

Your thoughts?

I really liked the original idea, screw the dudes complaining about you combining books to power game, these are most likely the flavor of the month people that cheese out there lists as much as possible. Or their just jealous of your skill

I think the new direction will be fine.

I'm not a huge fan of that Iron armor (maybe the heads) unless it's used sparingly, one thing I liked was how everyone looked so unique, like a tribe of barbarians in this setting would look in my head. Now for them being on bikes I see that working well, especially if you armored up the legs alot but left the torso's a bit more bare. But overall if you do use them I'm sure they'll look great, especially since your trying to justify the increased stats. I think bionics would represent that well, or straight out mutations. The darker/redder tone would work, just not as well at first glance.

I'm just glad you picked this back up man, look forward to whatever comes out of it

I think the FW Iron Armor idea is a good one. All you'd need to do is make it look super-chipped and rusty and you're good to go.

Had a bit of a brainwave for you. Do you remember the OOP chaos warrior plastics?

A couple of the leg options had big boots and would look perfect with ork bodies. Plus they woud be in better proportion. Ogre kingdom bull coversions like the one you pictured always look naff (no offence).

A HUMAN ARMY USING A HUMAN CODEX!
Someone made a suggestion to me a week ago about using the grey knight codex for this army, using mostly inquisitor units and have henchmen squads as various gangs. At first I didn’t like it but I’ve been thinking about it and it does seem like a better option because the seer conversion possibilities and the fact that the army will include humans representing humans compared to my grot guard and mechanicus daemons.

Here’s a few ideas…
Grand Master: I can finally use that badass warmaster conversion, with the right weapons modelled. http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2010/186/5/f/The_Krogg_Warmaster_by_Proiteus.jpg
Cortez: The Warmaster’s 2nd in command with underworld connections representing Cortez’ spy network.
Assassins: Bounty Hunters, simple.
Henchmen: I have many ideas for these guys most of which will have a rugged look to them. I will have to not include daemonhosts or the techno monkeys as they just won’t look right with the theme.
Chimeras: Armoured Trukks with heavily armoured dozers on the front
Rhinos/Razorbacks: Looted tanks maybe?
Storm Ravens: Seen the Reaver ships from Firefly/Serenity, they’ll look like that.
Land Raiders: Heavy Battlewagon like tanks.

Techmarines and Dreadnoughts are debateable, anyway if I use that codex this army will take on a more mercenaries like feel, which is good cause how else would a post apocalyptic army get from planet to planet.

So what do you think to the Krogg Mercenaries concept?

Maybe I'll think about it

The only 'but' I can think of for this idea is the explaining how they all have high quality weapons such as the storm shields and why the assassins which have to be taken are so well trained.
Using the GK codex will allow me to create an ultimate army of scum; rogue psykers, pirates, bounty hunters, mercs, mutants (possible Argo stand ins?) but I'm struggling to justify crusaders and assassins. So far my best idea for the crusaders is crude sheilds made from looted tau tech or make guys loaded down with tech with tesla coils and stuff who throw themselves in front of weapons fire for the sheer thrill. Assassins are a bit tricky, true there are bound to be places in the 40k universe for someone to hire them but 1 or 2 squads armed with power weapons, where could they find such a force?

If you've ever seen the movie called "The Book of Eli" you could base the assassin off of the main character, Eli. I don't know if they have that movie in England, but it's pretty good.
Here's a link to a good pic of Eli: http://www.allmoviephoto.com/photo/2010_book_of_eli_006.html

KROGGS SUBJECT TO EXTERMINATUS!

I’ve had some people ask me about this project so I thought I’d announce the bad news on the log. The fact is I’ve dropped this project for a thousand sons army after reading their Horus Heresy book as they had a lot of potential, fewer models and I didn’t have to worry about painting skin or people complaining about my count as rules.
I had planned to return to this project afterwards but Games Workshop’s attitude towards the hobby plus their constant price rises which are ridiculous even by inflation standards which will make this army too expensive for me to afford when I get round to it. Therefore I have been forced me to make The Scarab Occult project my last.

FLOG DEM BITZ
As a result of this decision plus being needing some money to kick start my thousand sons, I’m now looking to sell all the bits and models for this project. So that includes…

  • All the models and truck seen in this log

  • A half built converted truck

  • Marauder Boxed Sets

  • Plus the bits box that contains a large selection of ork, guard and maurarder bits plus a few diggamob and pig iron components.

  • So if anyone is interested in buying the Kroggs bits and continuing on with this project feel free to contact me via pm?
