I love the detail of your work, and just bought more sculpting gear, although I am a very poor artisan when it comes to greenstuff

my other question would be, did you receive training? Web tutorials, former courses, a mentor?

There is a very good sculptor in my FLGS who taught me the basics

No, no... this one:

http://www.adhesivosparsecs.com/ingles/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=22&Itemid=28

I was and art student for a while, but nobody teach me anything about sculpting miniatures.

I believe that I can call myself an autodidact. I began with this doing simple conversions, then a move to major stuff, and finally find myself sculpting from scratch.

I found the best way to start is working with and epoxy stuff with more structure than the GS. Sometimes began with the GS is very complicated because is really soft when you mixed.
So better work with Milliput classic at the beggining
Try to make basic shapes as cubes, piramid, and cones with putty.

Try to practice this shapes every time that you can, paying special attetion on the flat surfaces and sharp edges.

This will give you control about the tools and the putty. And will help you to improve your skills.

Always keep your hands and tools humected ( I use vaseline)... and the most important... enjoy the sculpt !!!.

A lot of people get frustated because don´t take the sculpting aspect of the hobby as a fun stuff to do, and forces himself to make perfect models at the first try.

A thread of pure win Mr FreakForge! Please keep bringing us your awesomeness!

And like many others, I really think you should start producing models and selling them on a larger scale. you would sell lots for certain...

Thank you so much, that insight has taught me more than you know.

Hopefully, one day, I will bring some of my sculpts to this board worthy of sharing. Getting it perfect is quite scary but I think, how you've done it, you don't sculpt to convert an expensive piece but for the sake of sculpting, and that in itself frees you to try new things. I learned that from you

As for lubrication, to share my experience

My tutor uses spit in the shop for his humection (eww! but he says the drying time is perfect so it doesn't become water logged), he does do fantastic sculpts however.

I use water. I find that with Vaseline you have to carefully wash it off.

I've seen this thread pop up occasionally and it never stops to amaze me since. I forget the name and significance of this thread and it is stunning every time. All I can say is no one else I ever seen can make a scratch model on that level and you are making truely unique and awesome models. I really hope to see more of this in the future. Keep up the amazing work!

@severedblue: Saliva works fine!

IMO is better to use oil based lubricant, because it takes more to dry than water.

And when you get involved with sculpt , you always get dirty, hehe.

Quoting this because I'm down.

Freakforge, hope your sculpting has been profitable for you. I have tried the above with Green Stuff today, and find that yes, it is very soft and that makes it difficult to make a "cone" "pyramid" and "cube" out of it.

It is a little frustrating but I still find your words most encouraging. Hopefully you add more beautiful primarchs to this thread in future.

Okay, so I know this is an old thread, but...

Freakforge, your sculpting skills, from conception to execution, are superlative.

However, I while I find the shots of finished models to be incredible eye candy, I don't find them very informative. Part of the reason I view P&M blogs is to get inspiration and learn new techniques and steal peoples ideas, lol!

I know it's a lot to ask, but I'd just about die if you could do a tutorial of a model like this. Ideally a video tutorial. I've never really sculpted, I always find ways to work around it, mainly because I have no idea what I'd be doing and can't be bothered taking the time to learn from scratch. But a video tutorial by someone of your calibre, showing us exactly how you've managed to do some of the cool stuff you've done, even the little things like weapons and shoulder pads, would be hugely appreciated and really give the rest of us a leg-up!

"Did you ever notice how in the Bible, when ever God needed to punish someone, or make an example, or whenever God needed a killing, he sent an angel? Did you ever wonder what a creature like that must be like? A whole existence spent praising your God, but always with one wing dipped in blood. Would you ever really want to see an angel?"

When i first saw the unpainted green's I was unsure, sorta like a detail overload you know.

Second I saw dorn fully painted I ate my words... holy hell, this is amazing. By far the best rendition of Primarchs I've ever seen. But as a SW player myself I must ask, where is our primarch Russ!

Anyways can't wait to see more from your forge, awesome work all around, great modeling and painting talent.

Everything still messy around here, but I always try to make another step foward.

I will like to thanks to all my friends and clients for their support and understanding.

So, in the middle of a bunch personal life problems, another primarch get done.

At this occasion Lion El Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels.

A model that took a lot of time to get done. I mix a lot of things to do this model. First I always found interesting the feral childhood of Lion, and feel that partticular aspect need to be around the miniature... That´s why he have the torn cape and tunic.

The general line sof the armor was inspired on the gothic cathedral around Europe (the generator was made trying to emulate the towers at the Sagrada Familia cathedral).

The skull of the Caliban´s beast as relic-trophy, sided by candles.

And the servitor as altar boys, carriers of the other sacred personal objects of the Lion gives a lordly sense to all group.

I have some troubles with the scale but the model turns out pretty well.

Here´s some pics of Lion, primarch of the first legion:
