Realistically, no one is going to do the bulk of their cutting or painting with the tray in their lap and I'm sure GW people know that. The point of a photo like that is to show that it's possible to use it that way where it might be handy to do so.

The tray: meh! At least it's got spots specifically designed to hold their other products, and let's face it, if you're buying this, you're probably already using their paints and brushes and everything else.

The case: GW's cases are not only poor quality, but seem to have gotten worse over the years. While it's nice to see GW realizing the need for a bigger case, for that kind of price there are far better options to protect my big expensive gak.

I've never had an issue with a GW case being poor quality. I rather like ones I've gotten, and of the five I have, none has ever broken or even looked like it was going to.

None of mine are broken either, but my son has several broken latches and a broken hinge. And as I've previously stated I see broken hinges and latches all over the place regularly. The first time I inquired about it at the store years ago the employee admitted to me that he saw that problem all the time. It's a common problem, extremely common. For those saying this is not a problem they have first been lucky and second not been paying attention to all the other people's cases with broken latches and hinges when they visit the store.

Personally, I have one small GW case that's about 12 years old and is still in great shape. That said, the reason I only have one is because any time I've looked to buy a new one I've changed my mind after playing around with it. The last time this happened was when they released the red and green large cases. The latches on five of the six cases I checked out fell open without any pressure. All it took to have them flop open was their own meagre weight. While I don't often pick up a case by the back, that's just completely unacceptable in a case that's supposed to protect some pretty expensive stuff.

Just for completeness: here the link http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=&prodId=prod990078a&_requestid=198423 and the last pic.
It is not as sturdy as the old one but more adapted to mobility (weight), as for taking it with you on tourneys/conventions for last time/spare time paint jobs. Not sure if I like the working platform be 1.5" above table level, but I am fine with my old wooden paint station. Too bad they discontinued it.

yeah,
Who bases their marines and then paints the gold and silver trims?... And leaving a brush head down in water is a crime....

not sure about the raised paint level...I too like my old paint station, I might buy a extra now as a long run replacement...

painting while watching tv might be fun though.

Panic...

I've tended to paint in that possition in the past, don't do it kids, I have very serious neck issues these days! Any one think GW may be in a bad place to get sued for such an ergonomically dangerous piece of kit?

My comments are my own, and mine own alone. If you have any complaints, please report to Mr Spanky who will take them down for you.....

@Panic: those paint cups are designed to hold the brishes tip down without having the bristles resting on the bottom, or ideally even in the water unless you filled them too much. That said I'm not paying $5 for a damn plastic cup

The paint station is nice with the sole exception of the hight. I was thinking of maybe picking one up but I don't plan on painting in my lap (a terrible distance to paint a model from anyways) and it seams like it would be uncomfortable to rest your hands on since the actual work area doesn't appear all that large.

As for the GW cases, I musta lucked out, my one and only GW case works fine after 9 years, though I've seen many (some brand new) with loose hinges. Biggest problem remains that they're only good for standard infantry sized models, even terminators don't fit withuot lots of cuts, and there's much better alternatives especially in foam inserts (my space wolves currently occupy said case but in battlefoam trays)

I also see problems when having the tray on the table. With the old one I could put it on the table and there was only a slight hight-difference. With the new one there are several inches of hight difference, so you have a small extra-desk on your table.

I made this in about 30 minutes on Saturday. I already had the materials but I'd say the cost of them would have come to about 10% of the price of GW's one. There's no point in paying for stuff like this imo.

Ridiculous expense for what is essentially a glorified spice rack.
