A lot of people complain about teenagers, but as one currently, I think if we just throw 'em out in the real world they'll either sink or swim, and hopefully natural selection (in the modern urban world terminology) does it's work.

Eh, but can we really complain? It's not like they're like this forever, let them have fun and all that before work, jobs, taxes, mortgages and etc. ruin it all.

And GalacticDefender, it's a sad, sad day when a nerd think's he'll EVER be the top of the food chain in High School, much less college (I say this as a nerd myself)

No, he's actually a registered fighter. We don't really talk about his fighting much so I'm not sure exactly what league he's in, but as far as I know, he has no losses. I even recorded a video of him training once for a project. And at 22, I wouldn't really call him a kid either.

And as for my kickboxer friend, it's just what he does on the side. He's actually a swimmer (here's to hoping he gets into the olympics one day), but kickboxer sounds scarier.

Well come on, man! Also, registered with whom? There's a lot of carnies out there calling their gyms "dojos" now to get people in there so they can be the next Brock Lesner. It's like the photography studios that trick people into buying expensive photo packages in the hope of winning a modeling contract for their kids.

Registration doesn't mean anything beyond that a certain gym has you on its roll of fighters, which basically means everyone that attends regularly who isn't woefully out of shape.

If he doesn't have a contract, then he probably isn't any good.

Its pretty ridiculous. Back when I was still working at a gym, the lines at heavy bags and other such equipment were ridiculous, and filled with people who had no idea what they were doing; more so than the lines for most other gym equipment.

I cannot agree more with this thread. It absolutely makes me wonder why the hell do we even try to do anything? I mean seriously! My generation is basically a bunch of perverted masterminded, racist, foul mouthed rapists!
It sounds stupid as hell what kids write to each other! Not to mention the fact that every bloody day I go to school i see a teenage couple swearing like crazy. I really hate todays kids. Because it has gotten progressively worse. But heres my contradiction. Doesn't every generation say the exact same thing? I am a 16 year old Guy who literally is freaked out when I see a 7 year old girl with a cell phone.
My parents have taught me discipline. Hell they believe it so much I was sent to a camp and was trained to obey and that is perfectly legal.
IT just really matters how you raise your kids. Techincally all you have to do is just tell your kids to obey and be thoughtful, and follow basic principles. OF course i might just be because i am in the scouts, and I hold on tight to my honors and such, but I make up for the failures of my friends by being a good person. Also the biggest gripe i have is the like syndrome, or the so-called stalkers. I believe my generation is wierd and stupid but other than that, it is just a thing that happens all the time. Every generation hates the generations below it.

Well, considering the location, I'd imagine he's probably registered with the MFC. I don't actually watch MMA (or any sport) or discuss it with him. I don't know if he's under any contract or anything (doubtful, since he's still in University, obviously), and from what google can tell me, he's only showed up on Top MMA news 3 times. Really, I'm the last guy to actually talk about his MMA career with, since I pretty much couldn't care less about the sport.

The point is, he's one of those people on my list of really scary people that got my back in any physical altercation.

I saw a news article that basically stated that nearly 1/4th of people who take military entrance exams in the US, that are of the "currently in, or under 1 year removed from High School" category (read, 16-18 years old) fail the test. The military doesnt really change its tests all that often, and being that i took it, and got a pretty damn good job in the army, its not a hard test at all.

The education system is failing, and i blame a few people for that: congress and government for taking funding away from schools; Rap Music, and all of its promoters; and Parents.

Socially we really are on a decline. With the popularity of rap "music" and a lack of proper parenting, especially with so many single parent, raised by women "boys" there are, its no wonder things are becoming progressively worse. Government loves to blame the video game industry, but its really more the things ive already mentioned

Also, starting next school year, the state of Oregon will allow Spell check to be used on its state exams, how dumb do we need people to be?

I really doubt it has anything to do with rap music. It could be the lifestyle promoted by the idols that the music creates, but I doubt the music itself will make you any dumber.

yeah, i can agree that it is largely the "idols" that affect people, but if you really listen to the content, or read the lyrics, you will see that its full of hate(especially towards particular groups of people), promotes illegal and illicit activity, and is generally derogatory and is geared towards people of lower intelligence levels.

Now, i DO realize that hate is not limited to one particular genre of music, however i have not found too many successful music groups in any other genre that hate one particular group of people over another. There are many musicians out there who will base albums off of a piece of Literature (Mastodon's album "Leviathan" is based off of the book "Moby Dick")

What i wanted to convey as my main points, was that its parents who are most "at fault" for how the more current generations seem, by and large to be getting more and more stupid.

Interestingly, many cognitive psychologists (including quite a few eminent ones, like Steven Pinker) have exactly the opposite to say about succeeding generations.

To take your spell-check example: imagine how much more useful information you could contain in your mind (as there is a finite limit) if you didn't have to worry so much about spelling a word correctly. I mean really, being able to spell correctly, without aid, has almost nothing to do with possessing a significant intellect; its merely something we've come to accept, culturally, as a sign of such things.

To put it another way: No one in their right mind would hire someone because they won numerous spelling bees. Well, not unless they were in need of a professional speller of some sort.

That said, I do think that Americans seem to be getting less knowledgeable, and many tests and survey have shown that they are, on average, less knowledgeable than their Western peers. Its easy to blame this on parents, but the problem is likely larger than that. After all, parents don't act in a vacuum. It seems to me that the issue is tightly related to geographic isolation (for all its cosmopolitan cities, many (most?) Americans are unlikely to interact with people from other nations), and a culture of entitlement that extends from the general notion that America is supposedly the best at everything by reason of being America.

Ill tell you what's wrong with MMA and people learning to fight mate, alcohol is legal and frequently used.

Oh sure its all for 'keeping fit' and 'self improvement' until Tommy big balls gets ten pints down his neck, then its massive chip on my shoulder start some chew in the kebab shop for no reason.

I decided a very long time ago that people who are "in to" MMA are dicks, I stand by my somewhat unfair blanket decision.

Boxing is a great sport, MMA seems to be what all the chislers have a hard in for!

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Because there are people who do it incorrectly and in an unsafe manner that can end up hurting themselves or others. Actually, I'm pretty sure there was a recent case where some kid died because him and a friend were imitating MMA fights.

There's a big difference between someone with a dedicated knowledge jujitsu/mauythai/kickboxing/wrestling fighting in a ring with constant trained moderation and medical staff on hand at all times. Where as there are strict rules in play, and fighters know the limits of their and their opponent's bodies within reason, amateurs have none of that.

There's nothing wrong with getting into it and learning it, but if you do, you need to do it properly. Randomly slugging out with others is bound to end badly.

First off, you haven't the faintest idea what you're talking about. Secondly, the same has been said about Punk Rock, Rock and Roll, Blues, Metal - even Jazz. This moral panic is an age-old aspect of popular cultural discourse. Music is music - a form of cultural text which, like any other, is accommodating of disparate subjective readings. Its uses and functions vary from person-to-person. That's how culture works. I own rap records, and can enjoy them on their own terms. I am not of a lower level of intelligence. Actually, I would put it to you that it is YOU who lacks the intelligence to be sufficiently aware that such an essentialist reading of a textual form (not even a specific text!) is pretty much the worst thing one can do, in terms of the study of culture.

You are to musical insight what Sarah Palin is to political insight, simply put.

I own a rap record as well mate, and i hate rap music.

Doggystyle by Snoop Doggy Dogg.

I thought it was cool when i was 15, now i think it is cool because the lyrics are actually hilarious. Here is a good one.

"Guess who is back in da mother fething house, with a fat dick fo ya mutha fething mouth"

Genius!

The funny part is, Snoop and all his mates are in on the joke. I remember googling "Warren G" and finding out that is he best mates with George Osbourne, likes playing tennis, and is related in some way to the Belgian nobility or something.

I lke to think that the whole thing is like some sort of cleverly orchestrated joke played on the kids who actually copy the rappers they see on TV.

Yeah, I'm fairly lost on this guy's point too.

And as for lyrics full of hate? Morrissey's been doing that for over 30 years now and his music is some of the smartest in the business. Hell, everyone's been doing that since forever. You know what they say, Noise is the Best Revenge. Or maybe I just like Morrissey a bit too much...

And basing music off of classic literature? Once again, everyone and their dog. And in the case of your example, it's not that smart either. Paraphrasing what happens in a book doesn't make a song any smarter than if it were about "cappin' [see forum posting rules] and fuckin' bitches." It's when you take the meanings of the inspiration and interpret it in a new way that applies to your own life.

And for the record, although I generally hate rap, I do have the soundtrack to Madworld on my hard drive. Good stuff.

Yeah this one. Short people are usually crazy dangerous. They're all vicious to make up for the fact that they're a foot shorter than everyone else. I had to find this out the hard way once. If your friends are where you run for your bravado though, and that works for you, great. I hope they're always there for you, and that the guy you piss off doesn't find you when they're not.

I don't know about MMA fighters or kickboxers, but I'm a fat guy who threw another fat guy over my shoulder once and I've seen Fight Club and the Matrix. Does that qualify for the Internet Tough Guy Club?

Not even that Im affraid. I worked at a drive in a few years back as "security" basically we walked around with a flash light and told people to shut their car lights off

Anywho one of the guys I worked with had a hugely fat ass of a brother who watched MMA and such. And he swore he was the toughest badass in the world, and he could kick anyones ass. He would say crap like that, and when Id chuckle at the thought he would instantly do the mean mug and start the "well you wanna find out or what?" which then made me laugh even more.

I almost love people like that, they make me smile
