I would have to say that may favorite unit, even though I don't run it often because it is a huge point sink and not the best tactically, is a full 10 marine assault terminator squad armed with a mix of TH/SS and lightning claws, led by a reclusiarch in term armor and accompanied by a sanguinary priest in term armor. What can I say? I love terminator armor. Libarian dreads are a close second just for coolness factor...they seem to go boom very early due to target priority but are awesome in theory.

I would say guard as a whole, due to the amount of character they have, but to narrow it down, the commissar. Mainly for this quote (after executing a officer)

What about noise marines? Loud party guys who LIKE pain.

Noise Marines are cool, but not as scary. Imagine a group of Plague Marines walking towards you. Nothing you shoot at them hurts them. They just keep walking. You feel dread as you knw it's only a matter of time before they get close to you, and kill you, and here is nothing you can do about it.

THAT is scary.

I beg to differ. Sure, Nurgle's fat kids have the whole gross factor going on, but take a moment to consider what's going to happen once those Noise Marines catch you.

They're going to rape you.

A lot.

Like, really, don't just gloss over the word 'rape' here. These guys have had millennia to perfect their craft (which is rape). They're not going to be satisfied with a quicky. This might take months to finish.

And then they're going to melt your flesh while you're still alive and drink the resulting sludge, and shortly after they'll grind up your bones and snort them, because nothing sets your brain on fire like powdered Imperialist.

So... Still think Plague Marines are scarier?

His save (a 3++ invul, but you have to re-roll success) will fail 55.6% of the time. So, each power the Libby uses will result in a 15.3% chance for a would.

Summary:
50% chance to use power, 34.7% chance to fail power and no wound, 15.3% chance to fail and take a wound

Not exactly likely to cause a wound, but it's more effective than shooting him with a bolter.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the average d6 value 3.5? Would not the average of 3d6 be 10.5, skewing it slightly in the odds of failing.

As was pointed out, librarians can't use SS, but still get the 5++ of terminator armor if they are wearing it. Furioso's just take a glancing hit.
Reading perls of the warp in the BRB, it shows that you face it on a roll of double 1's or 6's. What are the odds of those doubles appearing when rolling 3d6?

yes LD 10 test on 3d6(10.5) passes 50% of the time but chance of double 1's and 6's is higher for peril test

Wait librarians cant use SS but can use the 5++ from the armor for perils?

I also like Lightning Claw Tzeetch Terminator Champions. 4 re-rollabale power weapon attacks( 5 on a charge), combined with a nice 4+ invulnerable, makes them so hard to kill, while dishing out a lot of attacks.

The thunderfire cannon.

If they get within bolter range you're screwed... but Causing 24 wounds on a 30 man gaunt squad is amazing.

Being able to immobilize vehicles without terrain adaptations 1/6 of the time is amazing

watching your guys teleport out of close combat, leaving a base to base to base to base cluster of a carnifex, genestealers, and termagaunts and being to open up with 8 str 6 templates at ap 5?

ultimate lolz

oh... and it poops out a techmarine when it dies ^_^

oh.. and it can bolster one terrain piece

oh... and it's 100 points

Really, a thunderfire?

An AV10 vehicle that you only need to glance to destroy. Alternately, you just need to kill a single space marine at range.

That and it only fires small blast templates.

Against huge noobs, I could see it being quite useful, but anyone who has ever heard of an autocannon or a missile launcher or 2" spacing can easily negate this threat.

Ailaros, my favorite unit is sub-par in 99 percent of SM lists. It happens to have been useful to me, and more than that, vastly amusing.

But this is a thread about favorite unit, not best unit.

Sure, but the reasons given for it being a favorite were all to do with how good it was claimed to be.

Someone could have gretchin as their favorite unit, but it would be hard-pressed to say that they're favorite because they're good.

It fills a spot in one list that I happen to run, and does this extremely well... my experience would doubtlessly change when I play against other people and armies but so far, it's done a good job. I'm not saying that it's as good on as broad a basis as many of the units in this thread are, merely that it can be good in two rolls, horde infantry killing and disruption.

It needs to be set up right and it needs to be protected, and sometimes I mess up and it dies without doing much, but other times it works wonders. Again, against someone like you, who I've seen make full use of 2" spread, it would be less useful, but my army isn't based around the t-fire and, while I make no claims to be able to beat you, being unable to mazimize the effectiveness of two 100 point units in a large battle won't hurt me terribly.

Once again, this isn't to say that it is as good as nobz or t-wolves or scoring terminators or hammernators. But it does what it does very well for the points that you spend on it.
