Most of the staples mentioned here (aliens, matrix, mad max, star wars etc). Though would like to add:
Chronicles of Riddick movies
Virus
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120458/
Hellboy movies
Titan AE (i know it's animated but it's good)
Soylent Green
Demolition Man (what! he doesn't know how to use the three seashells?)
Generally I enjoy anything about dystopian futures and/or alien attacks

All the dakkanauts who said they dug it on release day have all 'decided' Battle LA is no good since the decidedly lukewarm reviews have been published.... I am in neither camp, as i haven't seen it. EDIT: According to wikipedia Roland Emerich has often talked about a sequel to stargate, though if he did go ahead he would completely disregard the series.

Someone posted Soilent Green (sp?) that was indeed a really good movie. I watched it a year or so ago simply because someone here on DAKKA made reference to it, and was glad I did.
Also I want to add The Island. Its a pretty cool movie.

Just watched Soylent Green again a few days ago...I honestly never get tired of Chuck Heston in Sci-fi roles...he's just so OTT it's great.
The Island...I'm searching through my memory banks and just can't remember any Sci-fi film with that tittle...though I do recall a film about Pirates staring Michael Cain with that name..
EDIT:...Speaking of Charlton Heston in Sci-fi roles..." The Omega Man"...a very loose adaptation of " I am Legend"..( The book..not the Will Smith film)...I personaly think it's a really fun watch...

and since we're going to the 70's, what about Damnation Alley? speaking of OTT, can you say George Peppard

FITZZ - The Island has Scarlett Johansson and Ewin Mcgregor. Basically all these people live underground after a "virus" kills off everyone and they "randomly" find survivors. You find out that they are actually organ donors of super rich people that clone themselves for those oh so pesky "oops wrong brake peddle" moments. And so Johansson and McGregor escape from said place. Pretty cool movie. And ALL 3 Matrix movies?! REALLY? Thats odd. I only watch the 2nd one because the Twins are in it. The 3rd just makes my head hurt. Demolitionman is a fun movie though Ill give ya that. Simon Phoenix is just flying rodent gak crazy

One that "counts" as Sci-fi...but contains very few "effects" and I personaly love...
" Time After Time"...a little gem in which H.G. Wells (played by Malcolm McDowell) Pursues Jack The Ripper (who has stolen his time machine) to modern day (1979) San Francisco...

I just thought of another film that I have to add to this list...
THX-1138...
A film written and directed by George (gosh I love CGI ) Lucas way back in 1971...
The film stars Robert Duvall and Donald Pleasence and tells the story of a future society in which sex is forbidden and all emotion is outlawed..
Not a typical "BOOMZAPBLAMMO" Sci-Fi film...but one I found to be very thought provoking..
Thankfully...Mr. Lucas seems to have forgotten he made this film and has...as of yet...not sought to "Improve" it.
