I had similar discussions and I know that several people hate me now because I said my opinion about unpainted armies / miniatures.

Guy: "Look at my army!"

Me: "I don't see any army. I just see a bunch of metal and plastic."

For me, an army has to be painted in such a manner that it is clear that these miniatures / units belong together, even if it's only the base that is done in the same style.
In an army, all miniatures share a common visual theme and the paintjob on theme gives the miniatures charakter, thus creating the impression of the armie.

I got into this hobby because I saw colorfull armies on impressive modelled tables. These armies became alive in my mind because they had character.

I like to think that these images of armies are the reason why we play Warhammer. Sorry, I might offend some people here: I think you have to be someone who absolutely doesn't have any fantasy, somebody who doesn't even care about Warhammer, to field unpainted armies. I find it outright offensive if you oppose me and my army with unpainted miniatures.
I made some effort to present you an army that is able to come alive in your mind. A worthy opponent. Now "you" come along and present me your metal and plastic?! Not that I don't have any fantasy, but I don't see an army in this - just a pile of unpainted, maybe primed, miniatures.
