I'm such a label whore. I really really want that paint set. I don't really get why they aren't including a fine and a detail brush though. Does it have something to do with the kolinsky hairs? Are they bad for small brushes?

Mega cases are back, which is great. Never got one last year. The masterclass book? eh. I mean, it's better than "HOW 2 PAINT SPESH MUHRINES REAL GOOD" or "HOW 2 DRYBRUSH TANKS AND APPLY TRANSFERS", but unles they gave it out at the academy, I don't see much justification in a 30$ picture book.

EDIT: Wait. In the picture it shows a large brush and a deatil brush, but the description is "One large and one standard brush". But it appears to come with a detail brush, which is fine. My medium and detail brushes are my workhorses anyway

They're awesome for small brushes. I use a 000 size for almost all my painting. Why they didn't include one... no idea. My size 1 gets used for painting larger areas like the carapace on my Nids. Anything else, even painting the skin on them, is done with my 000.

How much do they run? I'd be happy to spend 20 bucks on a nice brush, haha

I've used 000s before but none of them were decent for intensive use. Good to know!

My 000 is a random kolinsky sable brush from a decent company I really can't remember the name of off the top of my head. I think it cost me $20au. Depending on the brand, quality and price varies. Look for Winsow Newton Series 7's. They'll last you a long time if you don't treat them badly. I was pissed they didn't have 000's in stock when I grabbed mine. My size 1 (which is about GW 'stanrd brush' size) ran me $35au, and is a Series 7. So about $20us per brush is about right.

I didn't know what I was missing when I was using synthetic brushes. Always too stiff and prone to splitting. My kolinsky brushes haven't split, they're soft, and retain a point when loaded with paint. The difference when using them is very obvious.

I advance ordered the brushes and the book and picked them up on Friday. The book is ok and at £20 it's ok value, the piece on the Chaos warlord on his horse is interesting, but the rest is pretty run of the mill for regular White Dwarf readers. The brushes are very nice. The bristles are longer than Series 7s and this makes them much nicer to paint with as they have more spring. Are they worth £40? That's something each person will have to answer for themselves but they are worth it for me. I havent tried the medium yet so I cant speak to that. The tin is handy for these and my other expensive brushes. The booklet is ok but there's nothing mind blowing in it. I think the set would make a really nice Christmas gift for someone who is really into their painting and wants to take a step up from the standard Citadel brushes.

The price point is a bit high on the brush set, but for the retail (not online) price for high quality sables, they're not insane. They're also designed to be a gift. Unlike a lot of GW stuff in the past, this might actually be a top quality item.

I wouldn't buy that set at any price, I already have a set of Kohlisnky sables. Therefore, the price simply doesn't bother me.

Actually, a really good brush tin would be nice. Not $50 worth of nice, but I'd like one.

I agree about a nice brush tin being a good idea.

Rosemary & Co brushes are top quality and cost a fraction of what GW or W&N charge for the same thing.

I still think the book is meh, considering how many top quality videos are out on youtube these days.

Has anyone got these yet?

I was considering it but if it's just horribly overpriced, I wouldn't. If the brushes are worth it for the cash, then the tin is a nice bonus.

Far better prices for the same if not better quality in brushes.
Add to that they have a huge selection of brush styles for different uses. I use series 22, 33,92, and 323. I love them all dearly.

I think they are good as a gift idea for relatives who don't know what they are buying (if you see what I mean). As for the Rosemary & co brushes, I've never used them so I can't judge. I think it's like a lot of our hobby, people with experience know where they want to make a saving, be that in tools brushes or paint. Likewise experienced hobbyists will also know where they won't skimp. For me these are better than larger series 7s (1 and 0) and I'm very happy with them but I'd think twice about recommending them because of the price and that sable brushes won't make you a good painter. If you have practiced a lot and have done basic free hand work with the standard Citadel brushes, sables are a nice next step and make life a little easer but for the average painter they aren't worth it.

As for the book, no book youtube video or dvd is the final solution. A good painter will look at a variety of sources with an open mind and take what they like and disregard the rest and of course we never stop learning.

The reason for the pricing at R&Co is that smaller brushes use less hair and thus cost less than the larger brushes. Quality wise they are the same as Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes, but with a larger selection at a lower price. The larger brushes can start to cost a pretty penny.

I've had my R&Co brushes for over 2 years now and they are good as new, have maintained their tips perfectly and are easy to clean with Masters brush cleaner. 100% satisfied with them, and for what they cost they are worth at least trying.

@Aerethan Mmm I've changed my post to reflect that I've not tried them and be a bit fairer on them. Nice to hear that they've lasted, I've got a ten year old W&N Cotman brush that I love even though its misshapen.

20au... Not bad at all, that's probably like 15 american? Thanks, I'll keep my eyes open. I love GW brushes, but I could totally use something else. You can never have too many brushed, in my opinion!
