I like the alt Perdita, the normal sculpt is before the gunfight, where she's itching for the draw. The alt sculpt is her (as it has been said) being a little seductive, but the way she's holding the guns is sort of taunting. We all know that even holding them like that, she'll still going to blow your brains out.

As for her Avatar, it didn't make sense to me for her to be riding a giant winged blue beast, but it shows that Perdita is becoming more attached to Malifaux. Instead of just being a gunslinger, she's noticing how odd everything is, and how nothing is as it seems. In the fluff, she notices how messed up her family is, and starts to stay away from them.

Being connected to the creatures of Malifaux has had an important change on Perdita, she's not just a woman anymore... She's seeing a connection to the neverborn. I doubt this will change her very much, but all of these secrets being revealed to her kind of play into that whole "Avatar of Revelation"

On a whim last week I bought a Perdita model from my FLGS (Which stocks the full Malifaux range, I just liked that model ) and enjoyed painting it so much I may have to put a group together. I currently know next to nothing about Malifaux, and so I plan to get the rulebook by the end of the week.

Would one of you seasoned players be able to suggest a few models that complement Perdita so I can have something else to paint whilst I digest the rules?

(Not that I need another project at all.... )

Wel you can't go wrong with her boxed set! Its one of the most complete for a starting gang out of all the crews.

But from the sounds of it you have just bought her by herself.

I think the Governers Proxy is a great Totem for Perdita (Old guy with a book) as you can put off a VERY unfriendly trick that will make everyone cry with him and Perdita working together. Totems are little characters that provide support to Masters, they are not really necessary, but some like the Proxy, offer neat extra abilities to complement the Master.

Its going to depend on how much you want to spend, as you really only need Nino, Santiago and Papa Loco to get the best of the Ortega Family, but to buy them seperately you're looking at £16.20 from wayland games (I dont know if your LGS does 10% discount) while the boxed set is £22.50 and you'll get Francisco (a hybrid ginslinger/melee fighter) but another Perdita.

After that, I'd suggest either (or both!) Abuela Ortega and a Guild Austringer(falconer). I'd go Austringer over Abuela as they are very mean and the Falcon doesn't need LoS to Divebomb fools from 18" away!

Tacticool always trumps tactics

Thanks for the advice Kogan!

From what you've said I might just buy the boxed set for now, I can always give the other Perdita model away as a present. And anyway, I loved painting it so much I would actually be happy to have another go!

I had actually seen that Governer's Proxy model before and thought it would make a great Inquisitorial Henchman, so I may have to get it now

Beyond the box and the rulebook, would I need anything else?

Malifaux uses a 'standard' deck of cards, but they rename the suits to match Malifaux's flavor. It's not too expensive, but you may want to invest in a pack of Malifaux cards for simplicity's sake.

http://www.malifaux.com/Rules.php
The rules are available online, if you'd like to read them.
If you want just the rules, the Rules Manual works best and is the most cost-effective ($15). It's essentially a small, printed version of the rules available online plus some diagrams and images.
If you're into the fluff as well, the main rulebooks are the way to go. These books have heavy fluff, stories, and a full stat-listing of every Malifaux model in that time period for Malifaux.

Note that the Rules Manual and online rules .pdf doesn't have rules for Avatars and anything from the third book. The Avatars themselves come with a stat-card (like your Perdita did) on how to summon Avatars and such.

Aha, thanks for that link, I'll have to have a proper look through it at some point...

I'd definitely recommend the cards. Yes, they make the game more simplistic to follow suits, but the artwork on the cards is also fantastic!

I JUST got into this game myself & I really like it as my alternative to 40K for something different & much MUCH smaller scale. I love skirmish games, the old west, VSF (Victorian sci-fi), cthulhu & steampunk & the anti-dice system is a great change of pace as well as the individual model activations rather than a whole turn per person (though when playing against a gremlin/pig list it still kinda feels that way lol). And besides, I've always wanted to make steam-powered stagecoaches & aether flyers & now I can (can't use em but I can sure build em). Plus, the models are just great tbh, even though I loathe metal minis for anything other than display purposes.

When you buy the official deck of cards for Malifaux, spend the extra few dollars and get the puppet deck, they are plastic cards and hold up very well. The regular fate decks that come in green, purple, gold etc, are fairly low quality, and wear out quickly.

Also the art on the puppet deck is better.

I recently ordered a bunch of Neverborn minis - I'm more in it for the painting and the sculpts just look amazing. I'm really looking forward painting these up - and who knows, maybe they will get me in the mood for learning the rules.

I started out with the Dreamer Box Set, Teddy, Baby Kade, Doppelganger, Malifaux Cherub and the Daydreams - is this a good place to start, if I decide to begin playing?

Check out my Warmachine and Malifaux painting blog at http://ik-painter.blogspot.com/

As always, enjoy and have fun!

If you started with The Dreamer, note the errata they had on Daydreams and Lord Chompy Bits recently on the official site.

It fixed the silly 'slingshot' loophole that now prevents you from being in melee round one.

The Dreamer Boxed set and Daydreams are fine and great by themselves. Those alone will be fine for learning the rules.

I jumped into Malifaux as a nice change of pace from 40K. I like the look, the mechanics, and the price.

Looks: The minis are a bit "skinny" than what you may be use to. Be careful when using snips/clippers to remove large parts of flash. When painted, they look great. I have not seen a model yet in Malifaux where I thought "that isn't that good, they could have done better" as I have with alot of GW stuff.

Mechanics: No dice. No problem, I like the card part. At least it is more of a six sided option. The way triggers work is great with the different suites of cards. I like that the special rules are on the cards themselves and I don't have to reference a codex often. When you first start, you will jump back and forth to the rule book. The new "mini" rule book is great.

Price: Not sure of conversion prices, but, for under 100 USD, you get a starter box, rule book (mini), and alot of blister packs. You realy can start for under 60 USD. I don't see GW or PP doing that.

I like the game, glad the local store got it going.
