Well if we were to factor in the fact nids are based in part on the Xenomorphs in the alien films... those Xenomorphs are said to have a biological metal for their teeth and nails, it is their form of keratin.

Also remember the bonesowrds of the Swarmlord are made from an alien crystal, so the hive-mind has been able to assimilate its make-up and grow the crystal weapons.

all together another reason I don't see this as being impossible. unlikely perhaps, but not impossible.
