Didn't sting you or anything? Just landed on your leg?

People are so scared of Killer Bees, and it's entirely our own fault. Something like that starting with an "awesome" idea, is a a good commentary on genetic tampering with crops.
And really? Bees? I've been stung once in about 6 years, and it was because I squashed one against my neck on my honeymoon by swatting at it like an idiot.

I've never been stung, but that might be because I don't piss anything off enough.

I got stung by a bee once. I hate that particular bee, but the rest of them never stung me so they're cool. And also really important to many crops and to the greater environment.
And its good news that they seem to have properly established what's going wrong with the bees. Has anyone got any information on exactly what combinations of -cides lead to the vulnerability? Because Europe had that debate about Neonicotinoids just a few months ago, and lots of people in farming and fungicides were insisting that there's no way the problem was related to their Neonicotinoids, but they were put suspended until more information came in.

To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

I was talking to someone about it today apparently it's a dioxin based chemical (least i think so - related to agent orange anyways) . I've heard previously that some of the new pesticides have a very long half life (from a pest control guy) so the bees take little parts of the chemical back to the hive making it increasingly toxic as an enviroment. I've also heard new fungacides for crops are also playing a role. Also heard that some of these chemicals can travel 40kms (Via the air- unverified)- which considering bees fly a max of 5 km is a frickin long way.
Sebster , I missed it but apparently four corners or dateline ran a report on it recently.
with the pests that bees face coupled with these new pesticides the poor bees don't actually stand much chance as they only have a finite number of replacements per day. I'd say it's the bee equivalent of the black death or worse. veroa mite is causing havoc in Europe atm , small hive beetle out here and we are soon to get veroa mite (known as veroa destructor i think). Coupled with American foul brood , European foul brood, sac brood, chalk brood (you may be seeing why these diseases are such a problem - less replacement bees) and wax moth there are a lot of things for bees to struggle with. Trouble is when they get hit with one it makes them vunerable to the others.

Fire Ants. Jesus. They are so bad in Houston. We had an employee transfer from Ohio and wasn't used to them. His 3 or 4 year old son started playing with what he thought was a mole hill but in fact was a large fire ant bed. Poor little kid.

Fire ants are losing out to crazy ants. Crazy ants are smaller and less ferocious, but they are crazy in that they have no problem building nests in houses and electricals. They swarm coockoo too and seem to like to move around in waves. I lost an outdoor light to them about a month ago. As I am like a Zantraedi and have no mechanical skills away from motorcycle maintenance this is a big deal.

Interesting, thanks. It sounds like exactly what is wrong with the bees is even more complicated that I thought. Hmmm.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

I do indeed have a foreign car But the bee flew in, hit my passenger side window (which was rolled up), and got laid out. I pulled over to remove the corpse. Little bugger was still moving her legs and so I grabbed a plastic card from my wallet, scooped her up and placed her in the grass on the side of the road.

That was actually really sad to watch! they really did appear terrified... you could even see bees grabbing their fallen brethren and dragging them back into the hive at certain points... sad!!!
I don't particularly like bees. or anything that makes me feel like the deathstar and them like luke feth skywalker. I do respect and understand their reason for existing and hope they stick around... I have only been stung once every, and it was by a bee who landed on a button to an elevator. I didn't see him and he stung the tip of my finger as I tried to press the button.
those Japanese hornets on the other hand...

Killer bees would have happened even without us tampering. It was an evolutionary inevitability. Those populations were GOING to eventually find each other with or without us.
Regular honeybees though? Why would anyone be scared of them? They're not even very aggressive away from the hive. I'm kind of surprised at the people ITT being negative about them.
