Good to see you back! Lovely heat stress, and that beautiful, beautiful heavy bolter Sister is perfect.

Thank you gobert! Yeah I was really looking forward to painting up the multi-meltas after experimenting with the heat stressing on the flamer.
Viterbi wrote:Nice update, the eyes on the sisters are unreal, knowing how small those minis are

Thanks Viterbi, haha, yes they are tiny! I had to break out a new fine detail brush for those pupils.

Thank you youwashock! Yes it has been a while! I've been slowly working away but an update was well overdue

Another wee update, the first of my Sister Superiors. Unfortunately the eye detail is a bit lost on my model but such a cool sculpt.

Thanks for stopping by.

Iconic. One of two original Sisters models I made sure to keep over the years. Liking the subtle shading on the blade.

Nice! Nothing for a while the 2 posts in quick succession with well finished models! Sister Superior looks fantastic, those pupil dots must be teenie tiny!

Thank you youwashock, yeah such an iconic model! The sculpts really stand up I think, one of my other favourites would have to be the original Cannoness with combi weapon.

Howdy all! I've been slowly making progress on my Sisters of Battle. I've just about finished off my squad of Inquitiorial Stormtroopers and have made a start on my first Seraphim. The Stormtroopers were a nice departure from the Sisters scheme, although they do share a love for red cloth. Once they are done I'll get some photos. My photo-taking situations needing a bit of a revision, I don't have the best lighting setup and between my old iPhone's camera and the harsh light afforded by my current setup, it takes a bit to get a picture I'm happy with. Anyway, that's something I'll work on. In the meantime here is a quick WIP of my first Seraphim. I really like these models, they've got such nice detail and they stand up really well for their age. The one downside is the flying stands. I've had to repair a couple and I did consider full replacing them all with copper rod but hopefully they'll do the job.

You might have noticed from my previous post as well as this one that I have decided to stick with the grey basing scheme, at least for now. I did two test models and the lighter bases just weren't quite working. It felt like the model got a bit swallowed up in them. I've also finished up my Mistress Repentia which was a real joy to paint.

That's all for now, thanks for stopping by.
Until next time

Repentia Mistress looks great. Love her fire hat. The Seraphim is coming out sweet, too. I agree that the flying look could have been done better. Those little metal prongs never did it for me. Shame, as they are fantastic sculpts.

Is it just me or did the Mistress take more pie rations than the rest of the Sisters? Their Safety Management processes really leave something to be desired; you’re off in to a war zone, so have this nice Armour. Oh and would you like an open flame on your hat too?

In all seriousness though, great job painting her up. Nice clean highlights and really smooth white on her mask. Great red transitions on the cape too. The Seraphim is coming along nicely too, I saw someone else put them on clear plastic flying bases posts that worked pretty well.

Thank you youwashock. Yeah I suppose they did the job at the time but their tendency to break is a tad worrying Oh well, I've just got to be careful with them.

She has definitely been keeping a close eye on rations quoter and dealing with any 'discrepancies' Haha, and yes the brazier on her helmet can surely only increase the protection it affords, right? Thank you! The whites are a bit blown out in the photo but they are always a tricky part to get smooth as we all know. I think I remember seeing MacPhail popping his Seraphim on clear flying stands. I did consider it but I didn't want to drill any big holes in them plus I imagine they could become quite top-heavy with the extra height. Ah well, the metal tabs will do for now. I've been considering using those clear acrylic rods for the servo skulls in Inquisitor Cortez's retinue but that project is quite far down the track.

Great work on the mistress, I recently painted up her new plastic sister, but the old sculpt still holds up well.
And nice work on the Seraphim especially drilling those bolter barrels!

Thanks Viterbi The new models are so much more dynamic but the old ones have a special something about them. For some reason the Seraphims have sculpted indents in the barrels of their weapons which makes drilling them out a whole lot easier; if only all models had that

Hello all, bit of an update. I've finished off my first two Seraphim including the one from above. They've been really nice models to paint! I feel like I'm getting better at faces with each one which is nice as well. I have two squads of five to paint up and then I think I'll make a start on my Repentias. I seem to have misplaced two of my Repetnia models which is a bit sad so my squad is down to eight, but hopefully they'll show up. Otherwise, if anyone out there has two spares I'd be more than happy to buy them off you Also sorry about the washed-out photo.

Great work in the sisters, lovely robes and edge highlights. Their faces look pretty good to me, that’s an area I always struggle with too, but you seem to have got the hang of it. Good luck getting hold of the repentias you need

Thanks gobert, always nice to see you stop by I really enjoy painting the reds of the robes, the sculpts are so crispy and there's a real sense of depth top them.

A bit more progress. I finished off my last Sister Superior (the unhelmeted lass) a couple of weeks ago and finally got around to taking some pictures. Initially, I wasn't a huge fan of the model but after painting it up I quite like her! Tha face is really well sculpted and the details are super crisp. It's also I think my best face so far! I also tried a new technique on the plasma pistol of the second Sister Superior along with some OSL. In the past, I've always painted my plasma coils dark in the recess to light on the ridges but after seeing some examples of the inversed scheme online I thought I'd give it a crack. I think it looks alright!

Left-hand Sister Superior was my first time trying OSL, also an inverted approach to how I'd usually approach the coils. I'm pretty chuffed with the right-hand Sister's face.

I had several looks at the picture and still can't believe how neat the eyes came out on the superior. Marvelous! And the inverted plasma effect looks really cool and contrasts nicely with her red eye lenses.

Thanks Gwyn! I think that's the only plasma gun in my whole SoB collection so I'll have to wait till I get onto my Space Marines to more practice with OSL. I'm not game enough quite yet to try OSL on the few flames scattered throughout the force.
gobert wrote:The inverted colours on the plasma coils look really good. It’s really cool how it gives a much more believable glow effect

Thank you gobert, yeah it gives a really convincing effect! I've seen some examples that are so well done it looks like its an actual light in there.

Thanks youwashock, hahah, alright I'll see what I can do about getting the band together

Thank you Viterbi Its great when they turn out right on the first try but often I have to repaint them a few times to get it right. I've found painting the pupil as a line rather than a dot works really well.

Thank you Captain Brown, I've always been a fan of the studio schemes, makes me feel like I own the models I used to see in White Dwarf

I finally got around to photographing my Inquisitorial Stormtroopers! I'll get the remained of the squad posted soon. The Stormtroopers were great to paint but some of the details were a little bit muddy, especially the faces which is a bummer but still great models! They were a nice change to painting sisters and it was fun trying to figure out what the studio scheme was as I only had a few grainy photos of them. The freehand Inquisitorial "I" was also a fun challenge on their helmets, I haven't done much freehand before but I think they turned out alright! I've got a Rhino to go along with them but that is quite a ways off. I was lucky enough to get a hold of the Inquisitorial doors and hatches form FW back when they were available as well as some extra armour.

Love those old Sisters sculpts, your paint job is doing em' justice too - the blue-grey highlights on the armour is striking against the red cloth.

Stormtroopers came out very nicely too. The heat damage on the end of the meltagun looks very realistic.

Thanks Thumpingbear I love the old sculpts as well, so much character. And yes I've been having fun painting all the burny weapons, glad I'm selling the effect

Thanks Vitrebi. You can't see it all that well due to the angle of the photos but I was pretty happy with how they turned out. I totally agree! The scions don't quite scratch the same itch. Hopefully the Imperial Gaurd will get a bit of an update soon.
youwashock wrote:Great stuff. Those Stormtroopers are fabulous old minis.

Yeah they are awesome minis. Glad I managed to pick up a full squad back in the day. Speaking of which...
--

The remainder of my squad including their sergeant! Like I said in my last post they've still got an accompanying Rhino in the works but I think I'm going to leave the vehicles in my force until last. After looking at them all together I think their bases need a bit of work, maybe some tufts of dead grass to add a bit more interest and colour.

Thanks gobert, first time doing blue lenses but I think they came out alright And yes, that 'tactical machete' is pretty nasty looking!
youwashock wrote:That was fast. Looking good! Again, your reds are lovely.

I did a sneaky; I'd already finished the whole squad, just photographed them in two batches Oh thank you, it feels like 50% of my time painting this force consists of various shades of red so nice to know that they're looking arlight.
Olthannon wrote:Your painting looks effortlessly awesome, really loving the classic colour scheme and models. I'd forgotten how good those stormtrooper models looked!

Such kind words Olthannon! Thank you and welcome to the blog Classic colour schemes with classic models are a recipe for success I think
--

In the process of painting my first Seraphim squad (two more models to go!) I've decided to also repaint the red habits of my first batch of battle sisters. After my old supply of Red Gore ran dry I switched up my recipe (around page 3 of this blog) and much prefer the new results so time to bring them up to speed. Luckily I was only six or seven miniatures in but it can be a slippery slope when you start touching up/repainting an army before its finished

Whilst I don't have any pictures of my repainting progress here is my latest Seraphim. They're definitely some of my favourite models from the old SoB range.

The third Seraphim completed for the first of my two squads. Pew pew!
