Yeah, they're after something on Baal itself. It's been implied a couple times now that Sanguinius and the Silent King fought the nids during the great crusade, so probably something related to that. Now that Mephiston has half of sanguinius's soul and the sanguinor the other half, maybe the nids are being drawn back towards their old enemy?

Because Baal is horrible! Turns out every race to ever live there has been "split" that way, between a golden angelic aspect and a dark berserk aspect. When Sanguinius landed there he was connected to those aspects, and after he died the Sanguinor got the angelic aspect (and that half of Sanguinius's soul). Mephiston received the dark half while undergoing the rubicon, which means he has a whole THREE souls now!

So, Baal is Thraa?
On a more serious note, I always thought the Nids already in the galaxy were the remnants of a previous scouring of the galaxy by nids in the dim and distant past. Or a hint that they originated here and are returning.

Tyranid organisms are always just particles of a greater being. Every hyve fleet is just a tentacle, and the small organisms scattered around the galaxies are more like spores costantly irradiated by it. You could even think of it as the scent particles of the hyve creature. Makes sense that if the tyranids are present in a galaxy close to yours, you will have the "scent" of it reaching your galaxy.

Remember also that memories and data are flowing over the synaptic web, not through the immaterial like the messages of the astrophats. This means that they follow physical constraints. Something "felt" by the hyve fleet Behemoth can take years to be "felt" by the Leviathan fleet. Everything that we see about the behaviour of the hyve mind is not based on quick and istinctive reactions, the hyve always takes its time. It is inevitable, not fast.

Leviathan may have absolutely no idea of what an Ultramarine looks like. Leviathan encountered a pesky opponent called Blood Angel on multiple worlds, and decided that it was better to just weed it out preemptively in one huge strike instead of keep fighting a guerilla battle with them on all the systems.

But the Synapse is in the Warp. That's why it creates the Shadow in the Warp. There's no reason it would take time when the Synapse is in the Warp and is in every Tyranid that isn't cut off.
