OK.

I did some transfers.

This is only the second set of transfers I've done, the first being the Word Bearers CSM Chosen I did a while back.

They did not turn out great, but I think they will work.

The WB symbol:

The start of the Chapter Icon, which will be a skull with a Rune on it, I just don't know yet what rune I want to use. It has to be fairly simple, as I will be free-hand painting it on. And it's small.

And then I added some of the Word Bearer's rune script on the back of the Terminator Chaplain:

All in all, I like the look, I still need to do some work to correct some of the transfers that cracked, but I like it.
Group shots!

Let me know what you think!
Also let me know what rune you think I should use on the skull!

Well before they were reunited with Lorgar they were the imperial heralds, so maybe one of those long trumpets they used to signify the kings entrerance. Or do the sacred Octate (8pointed star) around the skull. Each octate could be slightly different as they would probably be self drawn.

I really like the Octate thing! It would tie in to their fall to chaos too! Nice!

I am now trying to figure something else out, and I need the help of everyone who reads this!

I am planning on running this army mostly as Chaos Space Marines for 40k. I just like the look of the Heresy Era army.

Plus, I like the rules for the berzerkers now, I'm pretty pissed that it took this long to give them decent rules. But I am going to add a couple of 10 man quads of berzerkers to this Word Bearers army. (I know it's not fluffy, I don't care) I plan to model them from Mk IV armor, painted red, like they are the Gal Vorbak before they were fully possessed, but they were already hyper aggressive, and more or less on the road to possession. (so, I guess with this reasoning, they kind of ARE fluffy for Word Bearers)

Then of course, I'll have to make a Khârn counts-as, along the same lines as the squads. (maybe a non-possessed Argel Tal?)

So, now you know my plans, my question to you is: How should I model them to look Berzerker-ish without using the berzerker models? Or do I need to do anything special at all? Just model them in aggressive posses?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts! I'm not doing this right away, so there is time for ideas!

Well, I've been getting some stuff done, but not a whole lot. But what I have done, I'm fairly pleased with.

First off, I painted my last 2 tac squad marines for my first 5-man tac squad:

Painting an "octate" around the skull for the chapter icon was a great idea, but when it came down to trying, I chickened out with the paintbrush hovering above the shoulder pad, I didn't want to mess it up, so I am going to just leave it as a skull.

Second, I have been playing around with a prototype for the counts-as berzerkers, I'm thinking of sculpting leather tie-downs to secure the skulls to the backpack, replacing the chainsword with a chain axe, and sculpting the feet into more of a running pose.

Third, I am working on turning this rabble of what I was going to make into zombies, into regular cultists instead:

Here is the first cultist:

And this guy as a beefed-up heavy-stubber gunner:

Next, I got some painting done on my 40k Word Bearer Biker Lord:

And lastly, an Old School Berzerker that has been on my painting list for a few years:

Sorry for some blurry pictures.

I got some other things started, but I'll post on them next month when I get back to work.

Thank for stopping by,
RSJake

Nottingham (yay!)

That sergeant's great. Love how the Biker turned out as well.

With regard to counts-as-zerks - I've built a unit of twenty up, myself, they're doing well with a Dark Apostle and Exalted Champion but really need to split into two Rhinos or get a Spartan to make an impact. In their first fielding, a Thunderwolf Lord who'd delete whole units in 7ed charged ten of them and got ripped apart - a good start. I built them mostly out of plastic Mk IV and Berzerkers; the latter is an antique kit, but the parts still look really good in hybrid builds.

What parts did you use? Not the ork sized hands I hope! Those are parts I'm going to avoid. But maybe the helmets don't look too bad?

I don't know, I want the army to look like they came straight from just before the full-blown heresy, got lost in the warp or something. So, my goal is make the "berzerkers" all as 30k looking as possible, and still get the point across that they are more than just regular assault marines.

Also, I have started on a 5 man "Ashen Circle" squad, but I am equipping them more in line with 40k WYSIWYG. So, a CombiMelta for the champ, regular flamers for 2 and bolt pistols for 2, the weird chain axes they have will count as chainswords.

Howdy!

I am back up at work again, and I jumped right back into painting. But the first thing I started on is this chariot that I made YEARS ago, before the Khorne Bloodthrone came out and Khorne heralds could still take a chariot. The picture shows Skulltaker in it, because I don't have the herald that goes with it with me at the moment. He's magnetized, so I can have him on foot if I want.

Still a lot to do, but it's coming along.

Also, I am working on the Champion for my "Ashen Circle" Raptors:
Base coat of red before details:

And mostly painted, still highlights to do:

Lots of stuff on the work bench, MkIII Tactical squads to put together, MkIV Assault squads to put together, Tartaros Terminators to put together, Khorne Bloodletters to paint, Squad marking decals to put on the MkIIIs I've already painted.

I'm even thinking about converting a recast of Kor Phaeron into an Abaddon proxy. We'll see how that works.

Well, thanks for stopping by,
RSJake

Always great to see you back at it.

Ashen circle guy looks boss. Makes me want to build 40K firefighters though .

Also new box of Skulls is calling to your champion saying he wants to pimp his ride some more.

He does give off a fire fighter vibe, doesn't he? Hahahaha!

Wait until I put spinners on the rims! And of course, kickin' base speakers in the trunk!

Here's the finished "Ashen Circle" Raptors Champion:

And the next two in his squad, the flamer bearers. I used parts from their actual hand flamers to make a more substantial flamer.

And I've added a bit more stuff to my test Word Bearer Berzerker.
Face grill added to Mk V Helmet to visually tie it in with khorne berzerkers:

Adding altered feet, and Chain Axe from Anvil Industries:

And last for now, I'm going to start painting this Khorne Spawn I put together several years ago:

So, what do you think?

Just a quick update:

I finished assembling my 40k version of the Heresy era Ashen Circle.

And I couldn't leave my 40k Chaos Biker Word Bearer Lord alone, I had to put tattered parchment on him.

I should have the parchment cleaned and painted up in the next couple days. The Ashen Circle I have to take home next week to airbrush the base paint, so those won't see paint for a while.

Hey all!
Fresh update! I have really been on a roll lately, and have been getting stuff done!

First is a Khorne Dark Apostle I started on a LONG time ago, I assume he'd be paired with berzerkers:

Here are my first 3 Word Bearer themed cultists, not crazy, just dressed in simple grayish clothes:

(I am trying to think of ways to tie them in to the Word Bearers better, like give a few of them hoods, maybe have scripture written on their clothes, or have parchment attached to them. I'm not sure yet. Still a WIP.)

And my Khorne Spawn:

And a Khorne Chaos lord I am going to start on soon:

I also have bloodletters on my list to paint. And Marines to put together...so much to do!

Well, thanks for stopping by, all criticism is welcome, let me know what you think!

Where are the cultists from? They look very neat as rabble. Maybe give them all some sort of ceremonial knife or facial tattoo/writing. I don’t think scripture works very well with just cloth clothing.

The biker looks great with the added streamer style scriptures, gives him a sense of movement.

Thanks Theo!

The cultists were from an auction I won on ebay several years ago, I think they were from a Medieval table top game, I don't remember, I think I posted about them on this thread at the time and was going to make Nurgle Zombies out of them but never finished it, but I am not going to go back to try to find them. the bodies were ok, but the heads they came with had these super long and awkward necks, so I had to cut those down, and the arms were odd and stumpy. I recently got some bits on ebay of arms with old WWII style guns that fit the bodies pretty good. They are not "heroic" scale, so they actually compare well alongside marines, just like guard and "Art Scale" marines do, without all the extra work of up-scaling marines. The heavy stubber is a steam-punk autocannon I designed and had 3D printed a long time ago, it's cartoonishly large, but after I sculpted the guy's upper body larger, I think it gives him a Rambo look that I like. I added a stoggie too because he had an odd shape to his mouth, and it works. As for the scripture on clothing, I agree, so I added a parchment to one guys "bandoleer" thing, and gave another one a hood.

Seeing the minis zoomed in this close, there are a boat load of hairs and burrs in the paint. But you literally cannot see them on the table top. I'll try to pay closer attention to that in the future.

As for the biker, Thanks! That's what I was going for!

I also finally painted this Nurgle Spawn.

And here he is with a buddy.

Nurgle beast is like mike from monsters inc. on acid .

Was just thinking and another cultist idea along the lines of scripture would be tarot cards. They could each have a card on them similar to how soldiers in Vietnam would use ace of spades on their helmets. Could even backstory it to be they draw cards to see what unit they belong to as the cultist leaders don’t want them to get used to each other too much and start questioning their orders. So each battle they draw a new card and some get the “lucky” I get sacrificed because I’m awesome card

Hahaha! The Nurgle spawn were just something I threw together a long time ago, not sure if I like them anymore of not, but whatcha going to do?

I think that's a bit more thought to put into the cultists than I want to...but I'll think about it.

As an aside, the leader I want to make for these guys, is going to be "the Red Lady", I think that's what she was called in the Horus Heresy Word Bearers book. The one that witnessed the WB's capitol city destroyed by the Ultramarines? Anyway, I want to sculpt a female in robes to lead them.

Well, I am currently painting bloodletters, so I'll get some WIP shots of those soon.

Oh, sweet, the classic Death Company Chaplain! I was looking at one in my bits box and wondering if anything could be done with it. Nice work! And that’s some solid OSL on the plasma pistol as well

Thanks Lindsay! That's basically why I converted the chaplain, I found him in my bits box and thought "I should do something with this". However, I did the main part of the conversion YEARS ago, before seeing all of these amazing conversions of late, cutting up old metal minis for conversions, I would have been inspired to alter this guy more, but my lack of skills and knowledge at the time resulted in a half-way conversion. I may revisit him in the future and completely redo him.

Thanks on the OSL, It's not something I'm comfortable with, so it's just very minor for now.
