I agree, i think the steam ball would be best. It seems more original, and adds to the Steam punk theme.
The Centaur look much better with the torso attached, and the front legs are look awesome. The arm did look a little like it had been ripped off someone else and attached on by a maddok lol.
With the trimming and sanding its looking better but still a bit big. I think its that the fore arm looks too large in comparison to the bicep and shoulder muscles.

I would personally stick with the vertical magazine. About the only magazine older than that is the under the barrel model, still used by shotguns and old lever action rifles. I don't think even GW would try and sue someone for that.
If you want them to come out the side, that is no problem, as a few mm of stuff to the side is no biggie. I am a little worried about the VERY fiddly firing locks though. You might want to think about how to smooth those into the rest of the gun somehow, so it isn't just .1mm of plastic waiting to be ripped off
As to seamless centaurs, I can cast up whole bodies, especially if the legs are not all attached. Perhaps though the earlier idea of cutting from the bottom of the chest to the withers to make separate torsos would be a good idea? Otherwise there will be a LOT of models to be made for multiple poses. I figure, the human and front of the chest are largely independently moving from the rest of the horse part (I know this due to an undergraduate degree in mythological creature studies) so that will be easy to swap so long as the shear plane stays the same on different bodies.
I don't know, but give it some thought. So long as there are not 4 legs on the thing it can be done, and even if there are it can be done, just with a great deal of irritation. Past that it is mostly a question of how many versions do you feel like sculpting for this commission?
Another possibility of course is to have a belt or sash or something that covers up the join. I think though that having the major involved muscles be all one piece and GSing a join between them and the horse would be easiest.
Oooh oooh! Do I get a sprue?!
Also, threw a little primer on the Commissar yesterday due to nice weather. Quick pic for those interested in one with more contrast. I'll try and get some paint on her this week or weekend, wife and Star Wars willing.

I did forget about swapping torsos and horse bodies. I can still cut a nice smooth line between the parts, that shouldn't be a problem.

Wouldn't mind a sprue myself- would help with my Steampunk Orks, which, at the moment, have precious little Steampunk- any more than regular Orks have, that is. And a few tophats.

No, I altered the face, she wasn't yelling enough before. Hmmmmm. Maybe I can re-carve the head, and have you cast a replacement? Or at least an alternate option?

i am definatly in for the ballshaped mag... that is a very established look... the old pressure guns looked exactly that way... with some added rivets and a band like you sketched it it woul be perfect for me... tho i still like the sidemag... but i am totally throwing my wieght in for the ball shaped mag here^^
the centaur body looks now very good...muscles look very convincing to me...the arm confused me a bit... because it looked much better on the guardsman than on the centaur...dunno why...
and... if i say pretty please...can i get one sprue worth of your fabulous guns?

I have the solution to the rifle question!
I shall remove the magazine and related connecting port. It shall remain separate. I shall make the ball shaped power cell. It shall remain separate. The end user can decide where to attach which power cell! Viola!
Oh Vik. You silly man. You were already on the list!
Oh, I forgot to address the arm. It looks different on the centaur because I had to trim it down quite a bit. It was too bulky to fit with the centaur body. It looked like a Catachan arm! I will file it and sand it, and see how it looks after that. Also it looks odd because I had too big a piece of tack to hold it there.

and i like that idea with different powercell options...this wont cost that much more material but giving a customer more options for next to nothing more is always a very gentleman way of doing business...!!! good thinking! as for the arm issue... well actually i liked it before becasue of the resemblance of the catachan arm... maybe you should do a comparssion shot witha marauder arm and a catachan arm... just to get a better feel for the new made arm...

oh... i think we might also need a scale shot witha guardsman beside the current centaur... i stood under the assumption that a centaur was a bit more beefy and taller than your average doe...hmmm... i even had orkarms as a thrid option in mind...but if you say that these would be too bulky looking...

Well, there are going to be two different sized centaurs. They are like Orks in that the older and more experienced they are, the larger they are. Ork arms would probably look ok on the Old Ones, as they are called. But the Young Ones are smaller. I'll get some scale shots. A cadian body would not look too out of place on the horse body, but the Catachans arms look out of place on Catachans in my opinion!

Thats pretty much what i was thinking right there ^
As for the arms on the lasguns, Id like to see a less beefy more cadian / Talleran / DKoK look to the arms over say Catachan. even though i love the models the exterme beefy-ness (? sp) on the arms sort of puts me off. However ive been excited for the prospect of having Tanith with steam punk rifles. It shall be fun to model to say the least

That is indead a great find! And casting them, would make great steampunk stuff Dave!
But are there any cogs there that are 1.5mm or less? The ones I made are right around 1.5 mm, but I would like some that are smaller...I just don't know how I could do it!
Don't sweat it Swampy! I do that all the time!
El Vik - do you think most people would carve the weapons to fit with existing arms and hands? Or should I sculpt some hands to fit these weapons?

Separate heads might well be a really good idea. Those are really easy to cast up, and would add some good variety to a good pose. In fact, adding some variant arms too would be cool, and probably not too difficult to do. Throw in some different hands and weapons... Put it in a box... shrink wrap it... sell it in stores with your name on it.

Find pretty much any watch (the good analogue ones, not digital of course) and take it apart. The smaller the watch, the smaller the gearing inside, and some of the gears, even on rather large watches, are tiny. I used some to decorate a Meganob's shoulder, (multiple gears!) they're that small.

maybe there is a way around it... try to make three interlocked gears together as a whole pieceß that wouldn´t be so fiddly and maybe that would work better in GS than doing one single gear?...
new arms would always be a nice thing... something like the mordian or praetorian amrs with epolettes... and big gloves? i never understood why IG dont wear them anyway...
there are even gears...sort of...in ballpens...the mechanism has some gearlike structures most of the time one could use as a stencil for pressmoulding...

First thing's first. I just bought a lady's watch on ebay for like $3.00. So we'll see what I can use in that thing! Thanks Anvildude!
Wehrmind - I have a bunch of various heads so far, I have some Hasslefree male human heads on the way, that I will add beards, hair and such to. I'm not sure what to do with the Steampunk weapons, hand wise. I think I'll just sculpt some hands that can fit on them. Then the end user can just slip the hand onto the handle, and add a bit of glue.
El Vic.I'll see what I can do about pediod looking arms. Do you think there is a market for them? And a picture of exactly what you are talking about would be great!
I'll see what I can do with the gears from this watch I ordered. And I have used the mechanism in pens with Orks, but they are kind of big and look a bit off.
Anyway, speaking of arms, I have a scale shot of an Ork Boy arm, a Cadian arm without the hand, and the one I sculpted yesterday.
Then a pic of the new arms on the centaur, with a sergeant head, next to a cadian body for scale.
COME AT ME BRO!
And finally, I have taken the power cells off the weapons, and I have started on the attachment to the power cell, to make it look less like a cadian one.
It's still a bit rough, but you can kind of see where I'm going with it.
I have rounded canisters curing at home, and we'll see if that works tonight.
Also, I have started work on a femal body for the centaur. We'll see if I can get it to mesh up with the horse body!

Don't buy whole watches search ebay for watch parts or watch cogs and you will find them in little bags like I got already disassembled.
