I can't say enough about the quality of your work Egg. Really... it's inspiring, dramatic, tight and clean. Really a joy to see what you'll be coming up with each time you post!

Thanks for all the comments guys!

SilverMK2 wrote:Can I ask what kind of paint/thinner mix you are using to get such smooth gradients? Mine always seems to be either really grainy or too fluid...

Sure, I use a 10/90 mix of flow improver/water for thinning all my paints (airbrush and hand brush). Grainy sprays can be due to a lot of things - not enough air pressure, paint too thick or a clogged needle/airbrush internals. Also, the quality of airbrush plays a big deal in this as well, the H&S Infinity that I have is the best at "atomizing" the paint while the Iwata Revolution is good for most things and the cheap one I got off ebay has occasional problems that ends up giving me a lot of graininess in my spray. Because of this, I shot mostly with my Iwata these days.

LutherMax wrote:Libby Dread looks awesome in true Eggroll style. Kudos for the BA Baneblade too, the thought has crossed my mind in the past!

The Ironclad and Chaplain Dreads are beautifully painted too but there's something bothering me about the Chaplain – he looks like one of those colourful jungle birds doing a mating dance, or like he's holding a couple of big blue flowers! Might be the combination of red, cream and blue. I think I'd prefer him with black armour but that's just me.

I'd be surprised if this hasn't been asked before but I have been through your whole thread and don't remember seeing it – what photo / lightbox setup do you use? You lighting is really really nice...

Thanks Luther! Funny you mentioned the chap dread, after I finished it and put it in my display case it was bothering me a lot too. I think you're right about the colours, there's just too many bright ones in it. I might have to revisit it later and tone all the reds down with black for more of the standard chaplain colours.

The lightbox I use is something I picked up cheap off ebay, it's just a simple 12"x12"x12" light tent similar to the one here: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/NEW-LS-Photo-studio-Softbox-diffuser-Light-lighting-Tent-Cube-Soft-Box-16-40cm-/110838530457?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19ce7dc199

Not at all, I start with a base coat of tin bitz, then I do highlights with P3 Molten bronze before shading with sepia ink.

Yeah I think you're right – too many brights with the red, cream and blue. Black armour on him would look totally awesome. I have that model still in the zip bag from Forge World so will be doing one myself at some point.

Thanks for the tip with the lightbox, that one you linked to looks handy the way it folds up into a bag... What do you use as a background, is it coloured paper?

Another question How long on average does it take you to paint a Dread, or squad or single character model?

Thanks Captainsolstice, San76 and spudkins.

LutherMax - Yup, it's a printed colour background that I got from MassiveVoodoo - printed from my inkjet printer on matte photo paper. On average I'd say I can finish off a single character in about 2-4 hours, dread and squad in about 10 hours. Speaking of which....

Dread #9 is done:

Looking at the arms, I'm going to say Forge World - look at the Mk V Mortis Dreadnought Autocannon and Mk V Dreadnought Autocannon arms on this page - the skull on the non-Mortis arm appears to be a give-away, though if we could see the underside of the end of the barrels a little more clearly, I suspect it'd seal the deal.

As always Egg, excellent work. I love the range of tone from the deep darks to the bright reds... it really makes your BA's stand out from the pack.

LutherMax - Dysartes is correct, they're FW arms.
SL - It's just a helm I painted blue for contrast, not necessarily a Ultramarine.

Hey there!!

I have a question from your Death Company Dreadnoughts... Could you explain me how to do that blue highlights over the blue? Which color did you use?

Thanks a lot!

Big fan here,
Cheers!

The gradient highlights were done with an airbrush using Shadow Grey which has a tinge of blue.

Update: Finished of all my close combat terminators: 3 LC and 4 TH. Still have 9 more regular terminators to do.

Mostly, on my phone.

There's so many bits of this that I could gush over, but I'll settle for being most impressed by the right arm/pad of the central lc guy - quite incredible. Outstanding, as always.

Thanks...those are FW shoulderpads and were a huge pain to paint. The Blood Angels icon has tiny details for each feather in the wing that I had to paint separately. Took quite the time.

Thanks Dysartes! Going to see if I can get everything out of the display case for army shots this coming weekend. Hope they'll all fit on my desk at this point.
