Very nice commissar,
Hellhounds are fun, the new model is one of my favourites in the IG range, lots of fun details to paint.

I have been distracted by a new project. Instead of power axe sergeants, carapace vets, or flamers, I have succumbed to the lure of the big guns. In my defense, Napoleon told me to do it. Wait, why are you putting me in a padded room?

My armored sentinels are finally getting some paint, starting with the bases. I built the models and decorated the bases back in May of 2018 (almost a year ago) so there was a long gap in progress.
Big bases are a lot of fun to decorate and sometimes daunting to paint because of all the variety. You find yourself wondering how to paint each odd little bit.
Hopefully more progress this week as I finish edge highlighting the "chicken feet" and move on to the main models.
I also finally revised my 2000 point Cadian army to comply with the new point values from Chapter Approved 2018. The points drop means adding a veteran squad. I will probably create it from painted models already in my collection but I still need five new models. It may be kitbashing and conversion time once I finish the Sentinels.

I'd suggest trying to blend in the items on the base to the ground a little more. Generally you don't want to draw too much attention to the base, so keeping it a bit more monochromatic is a good idea. What I'd do is drybrush the whole base with your gravel mid- or highlight color. This would simulate dust falling on objects in the ground. Now they look a bit too clean and feel disjointed from the ground. Having said that, your paintwork looks good, I like the details!

In hand, the items on the bases do not stand out much. In the pics, my Ott light is making them much brighter. Maybe after the sentinels are painted, I might find the bases too distracting. I hope it doesn't take me long to get to that fork in the road.
This looks rather daunting though...
I think that I will start with the armored compartments.

Well, I finally have time to work on 40K again so it is time to change two of my three Vendettas into Valkries for a 40K campaign at my FLGS. I want the Valks armed with multilasers and Multiple Rocket Pods so I removed the twin linked lascannons on the side of the cockpits. The wing mounted TL lascannons are magnetized so all I had to do was pull them off.
Now the task is to magnetize four rocket pods and the new multilasers. I started with the pods tonight and had planned to use a pair of small nails in each rocket pod. The nails would connect to the two small rare earth magnets in the ordnance rails under each wing. This worked OK but the magnetic bond was weak so I added another rare earth magnet to connect between the nails and the wing mounted magnets. That greatly improved the bond but allowed the pods to swivel 360 degrees, which was not quite what I wanted.
I took out the nails and decided to use thin strips of tin nail caps, which are normally used for roofing but I cut them up all the time to magnetize vehicles. The pics below pretty much explain the process. I only need to add that tin sheet can have very, very, very sharp edges when cut so please be careful if you use it and dull the dangerous edges with a file. Make sure you use the file at an angle that dulls the edges. I won't go into the story about that one guy that was accidentally filing the edges to a razor sharp finish.
It is too late to magnetize the multilasers tonight so I will hop on that tomorrow.
Good luck to the other tinkerers out there!

It has been a long time since my last project update but, as always, I keep adding to my painted masses of Cadians. The latest additions are a Primaris Psyker and a unit of Bullgryns with mauls and a 50/50 mix of shields.
I am playing in a 2v2 9th Edition 40K tournament on the 22nd so I wanted the new units to fill out my 1000 points of Cadians, that include 6 plasma infantry squads, two company commanders, a full payload manticore, a five man unit of scions, an astropath, and a priest. My partner in the tourney is bringing 1000 points of Sisters of Battle.
I will try to get some practice games in before the tourney because I have not played 9th Edition yet. I may lose often but at least I will be getting my army back into action.

Well, 10th Edition is here so my Cadian army is kind of screwed. My Lemans are cost inefficient and most of the units that are good in 10th edition are units that I don't own (Rogal Dorns and Gaunt's Ghosts) or units that are not WYSIWYG for their most effective options (Sentinels, Commissar, Cadian Commander, Cadian Sergeants).
So I am retooling my 11th Cadian Assault Regiment for 10th Edition. New models are on order. I have sifted through my extensive bits bins for once derided weapon options and I have started building, priming, and painting. I am also getting some games in with proxies to get a feel for what works.
My tentative 2000 point list is:
Warlord Lord Solar Leontus (new model that needs painting)
Two Cadian Command Squads (with plasma gun)(one complete and one needs to be assembled and painted)
Commissar with PW and plasma pistol (new model with PP weapon swap that needs painting)
Gaunt's Ghosts (on order)
Two Regimental Enginseers (one complete, one needs to be painted)
Three 20 man units of Cadian Shock Troops with 2 autogun sergeants, 2 plasma guns, and 2 melta guns each (need autogun sergeants)
One unit of 3 Armored Sentinels with HK missiles, chainsaws, and lascannons (need HKs and chainsaws added)
One unit of 3 Scout Sentinels with HK missiles, chainsaws, and autocannons (need all weapons added)
Manticore with HK missile (needs HK added)
Two Rogal Dorns (on order) with Oppressor Cannon, Pulveriser Cannon, two Multi-Meltas, Heavy Stubber, and co-axial autocannon
Heavy weapon squad with mortars (complete)
Less than half of the army is drawn from my extensive painted collection of Cadians. So this blog will be active again until I get all of the new models and weapon options built and painted. Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I don't know. I don't care. I don't ask questions. I just know the Imperium needs the Guard and we answer the call! The Cadian 11th will be ready!

Thanks! Fortunately, a lot of the newer Guard plastic kits either make magnetization easier or make magnets unnecessary.

My three scout sentinels are the original plastic kits acquired decades ago. One was still on the sprue so it was a trip down memory lane to assemble it this week. I still need chainsaws for them since none came in the kits back then unless you bought the Catachan version. A buddy is 3D printing some for me. I also need Hunter-Killer missiles for them but I am using leftovers from my vehicle bitz bin. GW keeps changing the HK missiles in their Guard vehicles so I am not sure which HK version I am using. Not the latest ones but not the oldest version either.
My three armored sentinels are the in-between plastic kit, not the latest and not the originals. Fortunately, these kits came with all of the weapon options including chainsaws and HK missiles so I just had to dig through my bitz to find them. I painted the bitz yesterday and today and glued them on. Unfortunately, I forgot the power packs for the lascannons so I will paint those tomorrow.
I also have three kits of the latest sentinels but I am not sure yet whether to make them scouts or armored sentinels. I like both but I am not sure I need nine sentinels in a 2K army list.
I got my two Rogal Dorn kits today so the only kit still on order is Gaunt's Ghosts. GW has lots of shortages of their kits right now but the Dorns and the Ghosts still appear to be plentiful. That is good news since most of my friends are struggling to fill out their 2K army lists.

This week, I received the base adapter rings that I wanted for my three armored sentinels. They are based on the 65mm (usually referred to as 60mm but they are actually 65mm) bases that came in the kits from GW, but the new sentinels come with a larger 80mm base. Because I liked the way I decorated my sentinel bases, I chose to use base adapter rings instead of putting my sentinels on new 80mm bases.
The base adapter rings came from a chap in England that runs a little company called Winterdyne Commission modelling. He sells a variety of base adapter rings on eBay. They are not too expensive but the postage to the USA is quite a bit. I paid about 18 quid for three of the 65mm to 80mm adapter rings. His packaging is professional and the package arrived quickly (ordered on July 15th and received on the 24th). Not bad for overseas shipping and customs.
I still have to sit down and paint up the power pack bits, glue the old bases into the adapter rings, and then texture and paint the adapter rings. I think it will be difficult to notice that the sentinels are not on a normal 80mm base once all of the finishing touches are completed.

I sat down and finished updating my three armored sentinels for 10th Edition.
The base adapters worked great. The power packs for the lascannons are finished and attached. I can put these on the tabletop now and not feel bad about it. I may add some decals and weathering later but there are many other models that need paint first.
My next project is the new Commissar model with the plasma pistol that I added to him.

I always get more done when I paint a little every day, even when I don't feel like it. Just paint simple things to keep momentum. Then the figure gets closer to completion and I rediscover my motivation as I get beyond the base coats.
I am painting one of the new GW commissars. It is a simple plastic kit that unfortunately doesn't include all of the ranged weapons available on the datacard, but I weapon swapped a plasma pistol for his bolt pistol.
He is about 2/3 of the way done and I am looking forward to finishing him once the washes dry.

Thanks! The base is nothing special. It is the molded plastic base that comes in the commissar kit. It might look like ice but it is just the somber grey base coat on a smooth chunky object. It will look more like concrete once I add washes and stippled highlights.

It seems like all that I have gotten done in the last six days is building and brush priming Gaunt's Ghosts. I have been going about it very slowly and methodically. This is my first time brush priming with Grey Seer. I avoided the rattle can method due to cost and the possibility of a priming mishap in the very high local humidity.
As you can see in the photos, I am also keeping the models partially unbuilt to make it easier to paint the cloaks. We will see how well this goes.
This is a nice kit and I looking forward to laying down the paint on these models. I plan to use Juan Hidalgo's Contrast paint method. I really enjoy his videos.
But since I am still finishing the priming today, I will have to paint some other models while I wait for the Ghosts to dry thoroughly. I wonder which models I should paint...
