Subject: Re:Rollin' All Ones -- Moving on to other colors... FINALLY (3/21/13)
Plane looks cool so far Ramos, but I have to tell you, the best part of this picture, THE DRAPES! Or tablecloth or whatever that is. Hands down one of the best backgrounds I've seen for a model. I may have to look at purchasing one of my own.
I will also have to apologize for not giving you a heads up before. I may not be as skilled in the painting as you but I have a lot of experience with painting white marines. I should have warned you. The old method, such as my avatar picture, has been replaced by other methods of which you have already mentioned. You should have used the other methods. It is however, to late. Push forward and you'll get it done. It will still look awesome! In the grand scheme of things you're almost there!
Oh, and I am with Solar. No facebook. Sorry. My wife wanted me to get it a decade ago and I refused, because that's what husbands do, so I then had to hold to my guns and never get a facebook account. The last thing I want to hear is any sort of, "I told you so" nonsense. If I were on facebook though I would totally like your page, for sure.
You know Ramos... looking at that closely... if you wanted the pattern to jump out more... you might have been better off keeping the wing edges black and lightening up the middle, rather than the other way around. That way you'd have maximum contrast between the wing and the pattern.

People who manage to do split colour schemes on any model, let alone SMs are very brave in my eyes, and you really do the Marines Errant justice. Always a fan of Badab War Veteran chapters, keep up the good work!

Subject: Re:Rollin' All Ones -- Nephilim wings updated (3/23/13)
@Ice: Yeeeeeah thats the hideous 15 year old (probably older) wallpaper in this room...
It's never been renovated as its the "craft area," so called because when my brothers and I were children (>10 years ago) my mom was big into the artsy stuff and scrapbooking, but it has since been abandoned for close to 6 years. Then it shifted to a storage area in the basement. Seriously noone ever went in it for ages, save to chuck another box of crap in it..... I had to spend about a month hacking out even the slightest area to work in! The giant desk alone took a week and a half to clean off (though im glad I did- its great to spread out projects!)
As to the white.... yeeeeah.... Its still a pain in the ass.....
No worries on no FB. Thats as good a reason as any not to have one! Stick to yer guns!
@uk_crow: Much appreciated! Though Id say Im more foolish than brave- Given that I'd have a month to paint an army, what color scheme did I pick? Not the nice easy red and black that the Exorcists were.... no, I picked the WHITE SPLIT COLORED ONES!!! xD
@Gits: Like THIS:
Taking you guys' suggestions, I went back and masked it off, and Im damn glad I did. I REALLY like how this turned out!
I needed to take a break from the Devastators.... onto the silver metal now and nearly done with it. Then its golds and reds! Guess now that this is done, Im off to do that now!
Thanks guys. You really help me keep going. At this rate its looking like I need a bit of that.
I hit this point today (reinforced as I was readying this update) that it just felt that I was spinning my tires and going nowhere on these models... Maybe its just that Ive been staring at them for so long, but it just doesn't look like Im making progress. I know I am, but honestly my wip picture now looks damn near the same as one I posted 4 days ago...
THEN:
NOW:
Maybe Im just looking at it too closely and expecting some kind of big change when I put on the next color.... I dunno...
I just gotta keep pushing forward.

Progress is taking place Ramos...sometimes it hits a stage where it doesn't feel like it, but it's there. Keep plugging away amigo, you know you'll hit a point where it suddenly all comes together....
You just gotta keep bangin' away at it Ramos. If you're putting in time, you're obviously making progress. A lot of my stuff doesn't seem like it's getting anywhere until the last couple of steps when it all comes together. You'll make it mate, just keep at it.

I think it may be because both the black and the silver are so dull compared to the white and teal, especially on the marines. It is more noticeable on the guns for sure (compare those two pics). I am sure the golds and detail colors will bring it home.

Subject: Re:Rollin' All Ones -- Red makes me feel better (3/25/13)
Yeah thats probably it.
I did a test fit on one of the marines, and really the scheme does have a very subdued pallette. White, Black, and Turquoise.
It really needs a tertiary color, one that would stand out.... so I spent most of today on reds.
The lascannon "glow" is something im not totally sold on but the heck with it, its painted. Next time Ill use my airbrush and maybe OSL Lascannons and Plasma cannons..
It does its job though, and breaks up the cold colors (as well as making me feel a little better in regards to progress).
I havent done the PCs at this point, but the glow will be a bit more difficult, I think. The ridges are a lot less pronounced.
I will be going back and doing my quick heat treatment to the LC muzzles, and that'll help lock in the colors and make them seem more complete.
Also for todays progress, I brightened a lot of the metals with Mythril Silver, and Im going to start tomorrow by quickly going through with a fine brush and getting at the more detailed areas of metal. Probably going to do the main armor highlights as well, as I guess Ive avoided them long enough. Then Ill finish highlighting parchment and cloth, and finally add in gold areas like the aquillas!
I actually think these guys are only a day or two from completion!
Nice little splash of color. I think you will feel better when you get something finished. That and when it all comes together I'm Chicago. Eyes on the prize man.
Just think, you'll have a fully painted army when you are done!

Subject: Rollin' All Ones -- Red makes me feel better (3/25/13)
Thanks guys! Managed to get the white all finished, and the metals too- All thats left for this squad is final turquoise highlights, a little bit of glow on PCs, then a bunch of quick little details. Then the bases, but thats easy.
No update pics (Nothing noticeable has changed), but I did get a game in with panda.
Overall.... I got crushed xD Ive never been one to write up combat logs, but here's a stripped down version of the basics...
Setup was Vanguard strike, Mission was The Relic. Zeke got Prescience and Forewarning for his powers.
BEFORE (just after first movement phase):
I got first turn, and put both devastator squads in cover, where they picked on the orks from afar. Tac squad hooked up with zeke and moved in on the relic. The Razor with 5 man squad inside moved towards the relic. Biggest problem were my dice- WORST ROLLS EVER! I botched a ton of my saves, and lascannons hit only occasionally. In turn 1 of ork shooting, all but one lascannon were killed in the LC/PC squad.
At the end of turn 4 we decided to call it, as I was left with this:
AFTER:
Only guys alive were the orphan Lascannon, and 2MLs and a LC from the other squad.
I did learn quite a bit from the match though... and it was a nice distraction from painting!
And for SL:
TO DO LIST > Finish Devs (as listed above) > Finish Neph (mostly highlighting and details) > Finish Razor (mostly highlighting and details, Turret needs assembled and painted) > 10-man Tac squad (sprayed base white) > 5-man Tac squad (sprayed base white)

Well, relic versus orks, you were pretty well doomed from go. We will have issues with hoard armies. Marines usually do. Looks like your setup was pretty meh as well, but with relic, what can you do?

Subject: Re:Rollin' All Ones -- The "Dev's" in the Details (3/26/13)
The game was great from a learning standpoint. a few more and hopefully I wont be too much of a fool at Adepticon xD Whats more is that panda gave me a great deal of combat analysis on my army (Im still going through it) that could prove to be super helpful.
Anyways, Im nearing completion on the Devastators:
As well as the objective marker:
At this stage I just need to weather and shade the gold, highlight the parchment and turquoise, then give the bases a good dusting of rust powders. Should have finished pics by tomorrow.
I also put in some work on the Razor, and got the white highlighted up. I also built up the turret kit that I ordered from Chapterhouse.
Overall the kit is nice enough. the casts are solid and are relatively easy to clean. Its even easy to install the magnets for the various weapons!
My biggest issue, however, is that the gun mounts dont fit the turret base very well. Unlike GWs kit, this one I had to glue in place as otherwise the connection is far too loose. I could have remedied the build with a piece of 1/8 inch pipe, but unfortunately I think I used it all on one of my terrain builds ><
Ah well, it looks fine as is, I just dont get the coolness factor of pivoting it up and down.
Still quite a bit of work to do, and a week and a half before my self-imposed deadline :/
The adventure continues!

....
So the Devs are done, save for just the slightest detail..... NO HEADS!
So there's that. Plus I need to paint up some shoulderpads and two backpacks, but that's easy stuff, comparatively speaking. Likely it will just be taken care of with the next batch of painting, which will be the first chunk of a tactical squad! Other than that these guys are finished! (the servo-skulls have since been painted and the bases will be rusted after clear coating)
I think what I might do is give these guys their own little in-game narrative. After each game, provided there's time and motivation to do so, the big scrolls will be updated to show kill markings from their time in the field

We of the Marines Errant prefer to avoid the COWARDLY sniper fire of our enemies by removing our heads, thus removing our weakest points.
What a minute....
*ahem* ANYWAYS!
Got the Razor highlighted up. It turned out kinda subtle, but at this point I dont think I have the time to redo the edge highlights ><
It works for what I need it to do, and I dont think you'l even mind it once its all finished. The Neph will get a similar highlight, though now I know to mix it a smidge lighter.
And I went and lined up my next step in infantry: The 5-man tac squad. They shouldn't take me anywhere near as long as the Devs did. They're only basic Tac Marines, after all.
