From: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/
"Rosetta@home needs your help to determine the 3-dimensional shapes of proteins in research that may ultimately lead to finding cures for some major human diseases. By running the Rosetta program on your computer while you don't need it you will help us speed up and extend our research in ways we couldn't possibly attempt without your help. You will also be helping our efforts at designing new proteins to fight diseases such as HIV, Malaria, Cancer, and Alzheimer's (See our Disease Related Research for more information). Please join us in our efforts! Rosetta@home is not for profit."
Basically these guys want you to help them perform computations that normally require the use of a supercomputer. Since said Supercomputers are a valuable resource under constant and varied demand, this was the best alternative. All they do is send your comp a part of the computations, and it works them out and sends back the results for examination. All this can be done when you're not 'online', and you get a nifty screensaver to look at and feel smart about. Together we can all make a difference, mostly without lifting a finger! That should inspire some people to help! Automatically Appended Next Post: So no-one's at all interested in this?

So this program will be sending information periodically after running computations?
That sounds quite interesting. I assume these guys are trust worthy, and the government isn't just trying to hi-jack our records .

HAH! That I find quite funny actually... You can limit it supposedly though, I always worry about freeware a little bit for these reasons.

This actually concerns me quite a bit, although it could be seen as nothing more than lawyer talk. Always look into this stuff before you jump in head-first, and more importantly if you are a minor and/or using your parents computer, PLEASE get their permission.
For what my interpretation is worth the University of Washington (why isn't that VERY clear?) will not be held responsible for ANYTHING, as in if your computer fries it is somehow your fault... anyway. You do take these risks, and I suppose the UW had to have these clauses (is that the right term?) in their license agreement, but it does leave you totally high and dry if anything serious happens.
If you download this program onto a companies system, woe be to you when they find out.

You can set it up so that it downloads while you ARE connected, then runs the program while you're not, then send the results and gets new instructions when you connect again.

None of you ever heard of the the SETI@home project, huh? This is not new. Just be warned, while your computer is grinding away, that means the circuitry and processors will be running full-bore while your computer is idle, increasing its power consumption. I have personally seen two computers damaged because of thermal breakdown issues when the interior fans failed to maintain a safe temperature.
Just a warning...

Even longer ago than that, I saw it on a documentary of some sort, it was well established by the time I made my first post about it in '08. It's apparently been a few years now, are there still issues with computers overheating and/or frying themselves? I mean, this is kind of a big concern if the program can use up so much CPU that it toasts the computer...

I use Folding At Home myself, and yes, if your computer isn't adequately cooled it can seriously damage your motherboard and anything else unfortunate enough to be near the processor/graphics cards. You can change how much of your processor the thing uses while it's running, but it does default to 100%.
Basically, if your computer is an off-the-rack model that's not designed to run at maximum power for hours at a time without overheating, you'll want to mess with the configuration settings a bit before using.

Yearly bump for Science! And for those with lingering concerns, I have yet to damage my motherboard with this program. If you can remap controls for a videogame, you can set the limits for the BOINC manager, not that they're similar in process other than level of complexity.

Pretty cool to remind me of this. I tried once to make it work and it didn't, couldn't figure out why. I'll try again!
Does this default to Rosetta@home, or does it automatically assign the tasks from different projects?

Another yearly bump for science! I'd like to thank the Mods for allowing me to bend the necro rules once a year in the name of several good causes.
Here's some feels for those of us already contributing to this particular project (and hopefully some added incentive for others to join us.
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1177&nowrap=true#75630
We have discovered how to make several new classes of protein structures! Rosetta@home has been absolutely critical in this work: when we design a sequence to fold into a new structure, the last thing we do before ordering a synthetic gene so we can make the protein in the laboratory is to send it out to you to predict the structure-if it folds to the structure we designed, we go ahead with it, but if you find that the lowest energy state is a different structure we go back to the drawing board. Our success rate in making brand new structures is far higher than I or anybody else ever expected, and the reason the success rate is so high is that your calculations provide a very stringent test of whether the designed sequence will actually fold the way it is supposed to. In the next few weeks I and other scientists here will describe to you the new classes of proteins we are making, and the many applications they will be useful for. Thank you for your absolutely essential contributions to this newly emerging scientific field!
