My winning entry for the chaos comp over at 40k forums.
Words cannot express how badly I messed up on parts of this miniature. I dislike rushing to finish a paint job at the best of times. I was wracked with doubts about even entering it. Go figure.

I like it Vent, nice contrast with the blue and reds and the axe blade looks great from above....
... just couldn't bear to pay $28 for a single plastic miniature myself, as much as I really like the model.

Bases are relatively easy to paint, fast too... But they're something that I'm often guilty of rushing through at the very end of a project, in order to combat this and give some love to the bases I decided to paint them first, and all at once to hopefully capture a uniform type feel for my next Infinity Unit. I did use an Airbrush though... I'm still getting used to my new one...
I started with a white undercoat. Another thing I don't do too often... I missed a few cracks here and there, but it would be passable.
Used a dark grey and then a lighter grey for the asphalt. Remember Asphalt isn't a uniform color. The more used it is, the more patchy it is, so I just went a little crazy and drew some aimless shapes... I think I wrote my name a couple of times... How narcissistic is that? Then I added some masking tape and started the blue
With the white primer I used a dark blue kind of sparingly; again I wanted to look to be slightly used. Then I went around the cracks with a much lighter blue, giving it a worn non-uniform look.
After the asphalt and blue tiles were done I taped again and started on the curb. I wanted it to be a lighter color but not white, so I went with the lightest and second lightest grey I could find. The lightest grey was for around the cracks. The second lightest was for the base color.
I stopped here for the day. Time elapsed so far: 78 minutes. Not bad for 25 bases... Details tomorrow...

You know, normally I put a little more thought into my blog posts but today, as it's Monday (In New Zealand anyway), I'm gonna be a little more direct.
If Games Workshop thinks I'm going to spend $145 NZD for four "Finecast" non-mounted Miniatures they are frakking insane. The prices attached to the new Hobbit line are beyond ridiculous, they are an insult to every table-top gamer and fan.
If you are planning on buying this stuff then you're supporting a company who are directly engaged in price-gouging in its worst possible form. Here's a price comparison for around the world...
The Hobbit Ultimate Bundle Set is:
$1,460 in New Zealand Dollars.
$745 in United States Dollars.
£447 in Great British Pounds.
Using XE.COM:
$1460 NZD = £750.216 GBP
$745 USD = £484.85 GBP
£447 GBP = $870.01 NZD
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!

We have been talking about it on my local club forum as well, ignoring the price ( and the prices are extreme!) the sculpts are also pretty average. I can only imagine that perhaps Peter Jackson has decided that all the Goblins and Trolls are malformed in the Hobbit? but compared to the original Goblins in the LoTR sets they just don't stand up.
Oh and yeah, the $145 price tag for the White Council is laughable considering how many second hand copies of both Gandalf and Saruman are out there,. Over $60 each for models with with no weapon options in terribly static poses... just disappointing.
Sorry if I sound overly bitter but I was really hoping that the new figures and box sets would reinvigorate our clubs dying LoTR Battle Companies League but with the entry price so high I severely doubt we will be able to convince our younger members to invest in the game.

I'm not fully happy with the end product. I was actually half tempted to start again last night, but I restrained myself... In the end I went with a plain and worn metal for the claws. So much of this mini screams utilitarian rather than flare like other figures. As such he almost looks a little plain... the gold helps, but I could see people going the other end of the spectrum and making him very pretty as well... Oh well...
I'm happy the eyes came out half-way decent, it's been awhile since I've tried fine control. The last touch I'm unsure of is weathering, I was going to dirty him up quite a bit, and I still might, but I wanted to check with the guy who will end up with him if this is something his army has or not...
As always I appreciated you taking the time to have a look. Any and all offers of constructive criticism is accepted and muchly appreciated ^_^

He looks fine vent. the blue and red work well together and as you mention the gold is a nice touch. The only thing you might consider is doing something special with the eyes so they jump out more. "Eyes are the windows to the soul" they say and this figure is someone special. I think the fact that his lenses are nondescript and blend in with the rest of the paint job is a bit too much of an understatement about this marine.
My 2 cents anyway...

I agree with Gits. Some green might stand out a bit more, the yellow blends in quite a bit. I had for a moment thought you had forgot to do them in the first pic. I was going to suggest some tribal marks, but I don't think you need them. The model is embellished enough, and as you say, the spartan feel fits him well. Weathering may be cool, but would be real easy to do to much very quickly, and I don't think it needs it to break up the empty spots, as there aren't many to be broken.

Awesome model, and a nice twist on the "standard" paint scheme.
Agreed about the eyes.
I also think the blades (the ones forming the claws) should be a bit more highlighted to make them stand out even more !
Other than this, top notch !!

Saw this pic up on GW's flickr pool page today
lol thanks. GW have a habit of showing my miniatures when I've changed them, or stripped them of paint
After talking with the guy who is getting the miniature, and some helpful hints about the eyes I've gone back and made some changes. I've used weathering powder in various places, part of it looks dirty and other parts look rusty... Still, the overall effect is quite nice ^_^
The eyes have been fully redone. The finished result is much better and much more in line with how it should look. Kudos to everyone who pointed out the subtle look of the eyes before. It's much better now.
I've also started something else I've been putting off now for awhile...
Some of you may remember I my house got burgled awhile ago, while I was working on my own army of Blood Angels and some of my stuff was trashed when it happened. I've never restarted the army, as I haven't really felt like it. But I decided as part of my 'get back to painting' thing I should go back and keep going. This meant finishing off the last guy for one of the squads of assault marines. So I spent 90 minutes last night working on his helmet. Yup 90 minutes... This is why I don't speed paint stuff... Because I CAN'T speed paint. It escapes me... Ah well... I like the look of the helmet though... That must count for something right?!
Everything is pretty standard for me, save the yellow wasn't airbrushed on, but worked up from a darker brown. Firestone gem is the same, green eyes are the same... Just took me awhile to remember the colours I needed. Now to do the body...
