Red Harvest wrote:Which Penguin, Danny DeVito or Burgess Meredith? ( the better Penguiin, IMHO) The mini looks like the Danny DeVito version.
I agree about Burgess Meredith and am considering going purple for my Penguin, but actually the look of the mini is quite BTAS.
Paradigm wrote:Nice selection of minis! I wish you could get that Detective and SWAT guy separately, though, I'm not a fan of Loeb or Branden.
They should pair pretty well, you've got no uber-heroes there that can unbalance things at low points (AK Bats or Big Bane can probably face most Starters on their own) so I'm interested to see how this plays out.
@Red Harvest: That's based on the version from Arkham City as far as I know,
I know what you mean about Loeb and Branden but their resale value - especially Branden being usable by 4 factions - is pretty decent. I wouldn't have bought the set, but I'm not saying no to it either
Solar_lion wrote:Good review but I'd like to see a battle report to see how it plays.
Well, pg 205 has one: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/6120/300224.page#8099072
But I agree that I do need to do a Batrep with these guys. Ditching one or other cop makes it even (well, 143 vs 150) but I'd rather ditch either Loeb or Branden just cos.

Well I think we'll see Marvel in the new year. But their marvel minis are lovely. Maybe you should treat yourself to a wee birthday present
Sorry I'm a bit intermittent. RL, mostly. Lots of small person preparation. Whole other kind of miniature.
Started redoing bases for the new crews.
Broken city streets for corrupt cop and rooftop sniper position.
And variety of bases for the penguin crew
Upmarket street for Oswald, rubbish for one of the gang, broken street for the car door guy, and a hydrant for the guy who has the ability to always duck for cover.
And... What could this be the start of?

It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. My photography certainly sucks
Yeah, rocket penguin - it's an ammo objective for the gang. I'm also going to paint a rubber duck gold as a loot objective very 66 Batman. But not sure what to do for Riddles or Titan but that's not quite such an issue - the unmarked graves really fit the Penguin theme anyway, and toxic waste is pretty legit for him too.
So thought I'd paint more today. Apparently the wife had the same idea, so I painted the living room
Still, started laying colours down :
And the gargoyle is finally starting to get into shape :
Need to stretch wing membranes across, likely to be gs rather than plasticard.
Anyway, coming along

Lighting. The key to photography, as I am slowly learning. Try jury rigging a lightbox. And for me, I stopped using a white background. It messed with the camera's white balance, no matter how much fiddling I did.
Sadly, house painting skills don't transfer well to miniature painting skills. D

Good work on the little people. From a distance I thought you'd turned the detective into Rorschach, but it's just the shading on the face (the model would make a good Rorschach though... )
Gargoyle is certainly shaping up to be in the child-scaring category.

Yes, you're quite right, I need to take proper photos. Mea culpa hopefully those below are better. And thanks mate! The gargoyle is a fun one, just working through what bits seem right. Taking a bit of distance has helped.
Solar_lion wrote:Figs look good . I especially like what you did on the detective.
Thanks! I want him to be pretty crumpled.
Dr H wrote:Good work on the little people. From a distance I thought you'd turned the detective into Rorschach, but it's just the shading on the face (the model would make a good Rorschach though... )
Gargoyle is certainly shaping up to be in the child-scaring category.
Quite a few folk have gs'd his face to do Rorschach. There is a whole Watchmen crew for the game, completely self-contained - can't say I'm not tempted Yeah, #1 son agrees that the Gargoyle is creepy. Job done!
Right, onto pics:
Had a bit of fun making a loot objective for my Penguin gang in true '66 style:
Ammo counter for scale
Penguin and gang:
The goons are Emperor, Royal and Blue, so that determined their colouring Love the Oswald model especially.
And the "honest" cops:
Again, pleased with these. All of the above were done with a very limited selection of paints - Vallejo black, dead white, stormy blue, gory red, leather brown, medium fleshtone (plus some patient blending) and GW reikland fleshshade - as a test for myself as part of my next article for bigcomicpage.com (shameless pluggery!) Worked pretty well, I think.
Time ticks by. Need to get on with gargoyle, need to Get Wood for LoeR, and really need to paint Vik's prize from the last LoeR but have hit a bit of a wall with colour schemes. Maybe I should go and paint my house instead...
Later, and thanks as always for C&C and support,

Thanks mate. I'm really happy with how they turned out. I will eventually do the other goons to flesh out the gang. The joy of penguin is his ability to run lots of free agents - I plan on him, Freeze and Catwoman.
Paradigm wrote:Yeah, those are splendid! Really like what you've done with the Penguin crew!
Thanks matey! I've tried to give royal and emperor touches of proper penguin colours
So just a quick update. Enjoying the October holiday with wife and kids. And beer. Got a big toy: new car, Peugeot 5008. I like to think of it as a miniature case for my expanding child collection. Sad to see my lovely Honda cylon go, but such is life.
Geeking, I managed to get a tamiya mud stick and sand stick (didn't even know the latter existed) today which I need for Sir Viktor's base. I think I have got my head around the colours I'm going for. Ivory steed (comes a pale rider...) dark blued steel on Vik himself, dark red robes on the dagger wielding goblin... I am able, finally, to visualise it. Might even start it.
Also, I finally worked out how the gargoyle was going to work. Quick test of wing prototypes:
These were done by making very thin sheets of gs and flexing to shape. They are supported with paper clip pins as ribs (or fingers, I suppose).
And on the eagle:
Then, got on with the wings:
Apologies, especially to red Harvest, about pics Needs some smoothing, filling etc. I'm happy with the weird creepy crawling wing and limb angles (many pictures of clawed bats climbing used as reference!) and I feel like it's about to launch itself on some assailant. Got to get the rest of the eagle head done too, and then get it all primed so the thing is done.
On the subject of buildings, Knight have been very positive about my Geeking Out blog posts (over here at BIGCOMICPAGE.com) and so are going to send me some of their mdf terrain to review! Huzzah!
So a little bat hiatus, and then back full throttle!
Cheers gang

Thanks mate! She's had a lot of love, I'm delighted with how that conversion turned out.
Something different: Sir Viktor. Once I had the colours in my head, it all sort of rushed out of me:
The Doomed knight, Sir Viktor Von Domm, rides upon his pale hell-steed, while ethereal flames are left in their passing along with death, destruction, and a gaggle of scavengers keen to find fresh trinkets, strong armour, sturdy pipes, exotic esoterica or just plain flesh.
If you'd like more/better pics, just ask, and I can but try... Or wait till Vikto Von Domm gets him
Really happy with how he came out. There's an insane quantity of bits and bobs there. Props to Dr H for his amazing wood-sprue.
Other stuff. Nephew's birthday tomorrow. Tried to help wife make sugar animals. Conclusion: Hippos are not easy to make (Noah's Ark cake) - or as she put it, Sugar paste is not Green Stuff (well, no, the hippos were blue...) I have even more respect for her cakey talents now.
What next? Cathedral is in for priming. Having a mighty loot clearout for Cam, LT and Bash. Then, on to the rest of the cops and... the Birds of Prey are coming!

Peugeot? A FRENCH car? Aw, I don't even know where to begin... Columbo drove a Peugeot, a 403, in the TV show. Enjoy your new ride.

Good job on Sir Viktor. Nice set piece, lots of details.
And good work on the gargoyle and figures.
Mine! My toys! no idea what they're going to send actually, it's a glorious mystery... Thanks mate. Btw that crate you sent will materialise soon

Thanks pal. You inspired me to pop a pumpkin on
Red Harvest wrote:Peugeot? A FRENCH car? Aw, I don't even know where to begin... Columbo drove a Peugeot, a 403, in the TV show. Enjoy your new ride.
Harley looks much better than the stock version. Will it be a functional gargoyle?
If they send you the terrain, take it. Have you had any experience with MDF terrain? The Arkham Asylum is an impressive piece.
Sir Viktor looks like a very nice diorama piece. Call me impressed. Would that be Kavalier Viktor?
It's not exactly my dream car, but it works for the family and has surprising power. Never used mdf terrain, any advice? Gargoyle is functional insofar as it's a stable platform. Harley was a lot of fun to do

and maybe something is missing in my vision...but i cant really make out how the actual gargoyle looks like....

So this has begun! The next task will be to match this to the colours of other sections of the cathedral.
And at Street level, the rest of the Cops are coming :
Not sure what I'm going to build after this. Really determined to get cop crew fully done.
Bases will be simple, with some litter courtesy of blackcatbases
