Thanks guys,

well I didn't get much done last night, since my wife and I were enjoying the last summer eveneing and we went to a nice outside restaurant.
And I definately had a wine too much...

...nevertheless I wanted to experiment with the laser colors a bit.
Bad Idea!

Lessons learned:
  • Never PUI (Paint under Influence) - the result is sobering and you'll have a paint hangover the next day

  • the laser "bubbles" are too big - with a slab of paint I can see that the bubbles are too big, I need to make them smaller

  • the current approach doesn't look good - I need to get some more reference material of laser blasts

  • But I let you judge yourself.

First I looked what colors could be used:
Suggested were red, blue, green, or purple. In addition I wanted to see how yellow would look.

    Well...

The good news is, that due to the white center of the beam, pretty much any color would work.
But as stated above, the current technique won't work.
Yes, OK, it was a sloppy 15 minutes job, while half drunken, but still this is not what I had in mind.
So now I will first re-do the actual beams and bast "bubbles" and then I will have to find a better technique to paint the laser effect.

    Oh well

Well either a pink/red or yellow/white is generally shown. Red would indicate a greater amount of power put into the beam as well.

Another thing to keep in mind I guess would be how well the colour meshes with the fire's glow later on.

I think it looks pretty damn effective from the last shot!..And I PUI quite often, with practice, it can work

I think you're being a bit too hard on yourself, Klaus. I agree with your assessment that the blast bubbles are oversized, but I thought the laser painting technique was pretty good, IMHO. I like the washed out colors. The only thing I might add (since you're re-doing them anyways) would be a concentration of color near the barrel of the lasgun.

    Best of luck!

I don't think Lasrifles would create an explosive muzzle burst like that, in all the fluff I've read, there is a high-pitched whine/crack and a flash, but no boom that would make a chemical muzzle burst like that.

It's not so much a 'boom', as just a couple of extra photons deflecting out from the end of the barrel, making it look as though the beam is wider there. Or rather, Brighter.

I think red indicates less power out put because the wave is lower frequency then blue. I'm not trolling, that's just the way that I understand it. I was going to say red better represents the low capacity magazine batteries, but the most important thing is for you to like the look. So with your jaw dropping skills I think you can pretty much do what ever you want.

    Thanks guys
I see we're heading way to fast into the reality universe and that will get us nowhere - so one quick decission from my side:
    RED
(and if it's just "Really Extremely Dangerous" color)

OK, with that out of our system, we can go back to the real matter
With the lesson of the large light bubbles in mind I created some new laser beams

and mounted on the rifle they already look better

But then I had the idea to try something with a bit more of a burst at the beam root and created another 5 beams

They are done using pretty much the same technique as the bolter flashes, just on a smaller scale and on a longer rod

To see how this would work out, I painted one of each with the red colors

    Actually not bad

I think this will work out

But going forward I will not use the transitional pale pink and rather go directly from the red to white and see if/how this will work out.

    What do you think?
    Cheers
    Klaus

I have always thought red was the colour of lasguns - I can imagine a fancy character or civilian having different coloured lasers but red seems a fairly good standard colour for the mass ranks of guard.

I find a single drink goes well with painting - a standard glass of wine or a nice pint of beer. But any more and I loose my ability to focus on the micrometer scale stuff and motivation suffers. Probably those with larger livers can manage more!

Well, to be geeky, LASER is an acronym anyways, and it means a continuous beam of light, Las-bolts are more like Star Wars blasters in my imagination. This then gets into the old argumental pronounciation of LASRIFLE, is it LAS-rifle as in a girl, or LAZE-rifle? The answer is of course LAS-Rifle simply because it's British and quite simply LAZE-rifle sounds stupid

Of(f) course it's FACE Palm and LACE Rifle - good old 80's style plastering Lace onto any female... - hmm, but the BASS rifle....not a bad idea either...
...gotta check the Widow Maker video from WASP and see... :-P

Anyhoo, I started to paint the uniforms of the troopers - just the cloth so far - using the Dencaran "Tiger Flash" pattern

And mounted back ontot the base, one can see the camouflage value

I just hope they don't blend in too much in the end....

I'm sure it won't matter how well they blend in when everyone is drawn to all the lasers instead.

Save the bass rifles for some Emperor's Children later.

Sorry for the delay, but real live is keeping me quite busy.
For all those interested in the PONOS casts, please be a bit more patient, I hope I can find some time this week to give them a go and get some casts done. I will then send one out, get all the shipping rates with the weight, and then I'll contact you.

OK, since the last update I painted many little details

But the to-do-list is still very long (and constantly growing)

A first positioning shot looks promising

I also added the MHI logo to the shoulder pads

MHI = Monster Hunter International by Larry Correia

Then I looked up my research material

    FLAMES AND MUZZLE FLASHES!

A mid-process shot of the flamer

And while the paint dried I positioned the HERCULES on the base, to see how the camo pattern would look

    me likes!

A blurry shot with the flames

    And with the lasers (WIP)

    And the business end!

All in all I like how it progresses, even without any OSL effects so far.
I hope you like it too
Thanks for your time reading through this update and I hope you enjoyed the update.
I look forward to your feedback and suggestions.
