I think they are doing a good job walking the fine line between being like the comic and standing on its own. Lots and lots (and lots) of fans of the show also read the comics, so they would rightfully miffed if popular and important characters finally show up, yet look nothing like their comic book counterparts. I want the show to stay close to the source material. I don't think it is absurd that these characters resemble how they appear in the comic.

I'm not saying they shouldn't look anything like their comic book counterparts, rather just subtle tweeks so that the characters look believable within the TV world that has been created so far. I think most people are okay with the way the X-men were represented in the first two movies, despite the fact that they went with more realistic costumes than what is in the comics. Ultimately at the end of the day a character's onscreen behavior is always going to make or break how closely they match the source material more than what they're wearing or their haircut.

I don't want to know if there's a reason in the comics why that lady would be dressed so sexily when doing so puts her at extreme risks of being easily bitten, but there damn well better be, or else I do believe that this is a horrible precedent of what may be coming on the show.

Most of us love the Burton and Nolan Batman, but we detest the Schumacher one, yet both are live-action interpretations of the same printed source material. Keeping a coherent tone with what has been set already in a TV series is of paramount importance, even more than adhering 100% to the look of the source material. If that principle is forgotten, then a show can quickly start feeling like it is in service to the look and feel of the comic book, as opposed to just telling a compelling story that draws you in and doesn't constantly make you remember: hey, this is based on a comic book.

Um, its summer, in Atlanta, with no air conditioning. I'd be wearing next to nothing to if I was in a big army truck. Look at Abraham, he's is a sweat soaked wifebeater.

It's been like that since the show began though. Why did Rick wear his sheriff's hat for so long? It wasn't all that practical but it was just part of his character. The same goes for Dale. He work an unbuttoned short sleeve shirt that offered no protection and it was loose fitting which would make him easier to grab.

Of all the things to nitpick on that show, the fact that Rosita is wearing a shirt with her midriff exposed has got to be pretty low on that list.

But this is my point. There are some things that look okay even cool in a comic book panel that look absolutely absurd when you see them in real life. A good film/TV show understands this and makes the small changes necessary to keep the flavor of the original character intact while still making them not look absolutely ludicrous.

I thought that overall this was a very strong episode, but then that final shot took me completely out of the story and just made me laugh at how ridiculous those new characters look...they're more like caricatures than characters. It's a really distressing sign to me when they're willing to give up immersion and a sense of 'realism' (within the realm of the ridiculous that the show does operate in) in order to pay homage to the source material.

If this ends up being the start of a trend, then this may be the point where TWD as a TV show jumps the shark. With the revolving cast of showrunners on the TWD, it may be a case now where the guy in charge is now deferring *too much* to Kirkman's input. Without having read the comics I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing that up to this point significant changes have been made in many cases to keep the TV story a little more believable when you see it onscreen, because just matter of fact there are things you can get away with in a comic that don't seem unrealistic that seem idiotic when you see them realized in live action.

So I just hope this isn't the start of a trend!

Calmness, there isn't even that many more memorable characters in the comics after these three. And I guarantee that it wasn't Kirkman pushing for a cool shot of them. In fact he seems to be the driving force behind making the show as different from the comic as possible much to my annoyance. Other folks producing the show are most likely trying to get the comic book fans excited and letting their fandom show through.

Honestly, I'm quite shocked this is some sort of mini-controversy.

I don't know if anyone cares in the world besides me about this (have you seen anyone else bugged by it), so I wouldn't call it even a mini-controversy.

I'm just a fan of the show who hasn't read the comics and has enjoyed every episode. Up to this point sure there have been plenty of WTF moments where characters do things that don't seem to make a lot of sense, but I think that's natural in any post-apocalyptic depiction. But this is the first time that I've laughed out loud at how ridiculous something looked because it looked like a joke or someone's high school video project where they have all the stereo-type characters strike a 'cool pose' for the camera.

It just felt strange and out of place, so I thought I'd comment on it (since that's the point of this discussion thread) and see if anyone agreed with me, but so far it looks like I may be alone in my opinion , which I'm okay with.

Quite a few people seem to agree with you. I can see how them trying too hard can backfire. In fact it has every time so far. In the comics the most popular characters are Michonne, Andrea, Carl and Rick. The show's awareness of this has resulted in trying to portray these characters as super-cool which has led to people feeling ambivalent at best about them and downright hatred at worst. I think the same thing is highly probable with Abraham & co.

On the flip side they don't force it with Daryl (a character that doesn't even exist in the comic) and wouldn't you know it. He's the most popular character in the show.

Anyway, besides those five "controversial" seconds (which I didn't mind) I quite enjoyed this episode. It felt like some good old survival horror rather than a soap opera which the show can meander into sometimes.

I'm ok with it. From what I can tell they've done that several times now, Michonne being the best example.

Spoiler:
I'd like to see them wander some more before they formed into the next story arcs. I seem to like those episodes the best.

Found an interview with Kirkman from before S4 began and it had this nugget at the very end:

You’re working on a spinoff. How will that work? Will it be something entirely different, like Breaking Bad spinning off a Saul Goodman comedy?
Well, the spinoff takes place in space. No. I can say we’re not going to pull any characters from The Walking Dead, or the comics. It will be an all-new cast and an entirely new setting. To a certain extent, I’m competing with 24-year-old me to create a new Walking Dead thing. I think it will be vastly different. It won’t be a comedy or, like, a lawyer show. It will be about survival in some way but in order for it to justify its existence it has to be different in significant ways from the mothershow.

I really prefer these type of episodes best. The show really stagnated when everything took place behind prison walls.

Though we really didn't like Glen's Tactical Dreadnought Armor zombie stroll. Otherwise a really solid episode.

You kind of wonder why he's not always wearing that armor.

As a Group they were memorable. Though I agree the storyline should be wrapped up in just one or two episodes. Perhaps one episode of buildup, a sense of being stalked and followed, culminating with an attack on a character. Then the next episode is about getting payback.

Because he didn't need to? The prison was pretty safe until the Governor came to visit.

Since their arrival at the prison, he rarely left. IIRC, the only time he left was when he and Maggie left to find baby formula for the newborn Judith, and they were captured and taken to Woodbury by Merle. This was shortly after they took the prison. The armour probably hadn't been cleaned and disinfected yet, and they certainly didn't expect that they would need it. Glenn (and Maggie) wore the armour when the Woodbury Army attacked. Then Glenn fell ill with the mysterious flu disease, and he was too ill to stand never mind fight, so he did not have his armour with him and did not participate in The Governor Act II.They were all taken by surprise when the Governor arrived for the second time, so Maggie didn't have her armour either.

In 4x10 Glenn was still recovering from the flu. Its a miracle he didn't collapse under a dog pile of zombies when he was escaping the Prison.

I think Glenn should give his armour to Abraham and let the guy go mental. If Glenn can waltz through a horde of zombies, imagine the havoc Abraham could wreak if he was impervious from head to toe.

I was hoping this show would get a lot better when the Governor died because it freed them to do whatever they wanted and I think it has.

I think it's just naturally more dynamic when they're on the move. Which isn't to say it should be survival horror all the time. At some point down the road things will need to shift to society building, like the comic book has.

Comic spoiler...
Spoiler:
People try to make Negan out to be just another Governor, but IMO he's not. The Governor was solely focused on the survival of his own community. If you weren't with him (under him), you were against him an enemy. Negan and the Saviors offer a kind of crude, corrupt and violent society based on the interdependence of the various communities (obviously weighted toward his own and himself in particular).

I was thinking Negan as well. Those guys were a bunch of incompetents though. It's a wonder they lasted so long.

How can you get very far when you keep killing your group because you want the bed? or first killing a guy then go to sleep right next to the body? or to dumb to first lower pants, then sit on the toilet.

They seemed to be waiting for others though, that bird call seemed more like a signal that random whistling.

With the way S4 has been rolling and the departure of Glen Mazzara I think it's safe to make that assumption for now. I'm definitely loving the pace and feel of this season.

The bandits in the house couldn't possibly have been Negan and his Saviours. They're in Washington DC, a long, long way from the prison, unless the showrunners have decided to drastically compress the distance by changing the location to a different city closer by.

Spoiler:
I expect the next few episodes will focus on the various groups struggling to survive on the road to Washington, similar to the comics. Negan and the Saviours probably won't be introduced until the Finale.

Remember that gigantic herd of walkers that Daryl, Tyreese, Michonne and Bob ran into when they were out looking for medicine? That herd was in the comics. Rick and co. almost get caught by it, and they spend a couple issues fleeing from it and trying to stay ahead of the herd.

I don't know. I didn't really see the point in this episode. We meet Abrahms group a little and we run from some strangers in a house. Really not much as far as plot movement.
