Bravo and well done!

So which company is next? Filling out the 1st or 10th? Or one of the other battle companies? Those chapters don’t collect themselves you know.

Thank you, we can start a 3rd Company owners club. I think the next slow burn project for the SM will be the 11th Company, all Primaris. In my version of reality all the bigboys get there own formation rather than messing up my perfect existing Company. I can design a new banner, paint a new captain etc without it feeling like too much of duplication of effort. I'm looking forward to building some inters actually and have 15 ready to go (and 5 done), if I keep the squads mostly 5 man I only need another 10 to have fulfilled all the 6 troops slots and I've 6 jump guys and 5 Hell Blasters (and some more Reivers unfortunately) also waiting in the wings. That's most of it already! Got too much work stuff on now but that should all be cleared in a week or so and I can get my toys out a bit more.

Courage & Honour (and crisps)!

Yes I look forward to those, what chapter were you thinking again? There's always room for more, real men dual wield SM companies!

Or Imperial Guard? I've already done a company of them (not too mention all the tanks etc). LOL, No I know what you mean. I feel no pulls to start any other races really (other than Primaris which probably count), very happy with sizable IG and SM forces, there is the Medieval 'Perry Twins' army too, I'd like to finish that at some point.

Thanks for all your comments.

I already started in on the black, sorry.

Besides, should we be looking for people with Companies other than our own, for the full Chapter Meetup and high-5 session?

Hello again old friend..

I haven't retired or sold up and spent everything on Pokemon cards (yet) but I have taken it easy after finishing the last chunk of stuff.

I've been stockpiling Primaris for a while...

so I decided to make a start on them...

Here's 3 squads of Inters, 1 Hellbastards, 2 LTs, and a possible Librarian conversion..

I'm starting here, I want them to look varied and different to the stock builds. Most people seem to just build the Dark Imperium dudes as they are so I'm trying to blend them in a bit. I've all the DI sprues from Conquest! and a single 'proper' Inter sprue from Wake the Dead.

I had one EtB body left over from the original Conquest sprue all the way back at the beginning of that release..I used a head from the old Tack sprue and a powerfist I had lying around.

I swapped the body to the LT with the flatop top haircut's

and made myself another LT from the Standard bearer's body..using a head from the Repulsor frame.

I wanted to make another M79 style AGL for this squad and wanted a dynamic pose....

I'm building these guys at the mo so more on them soon.

I've got some loot from Xmas and my recent b'day..

Some proper brushes for the first time in years, I'm looking forward to trying them out..

I've got these puppies too. I think the Snipers will get bumped up the queue as they are pretty useful, the upgrade sprue will be handy for the massed build. I like Medics but haven't used one in a while and I'm toying with swapping him but haven't decided yet. As I write this I just had a late present of Chapter Approved 2019 too!

Moar eventually, I hope you all had satisfactory gifting events in the recent festive occurrence.

xx

Uh oh, Randy's back at it again. Good for you, old bean, but it weakens my excuses for not working on any of my projects.

That's a lot of Primaris for one go. Are you going to tackle them in groups of three or try for a lot more at one time?

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

I build IG...lots and lots of IG.

Oh I'm always at it.

Though I take breaks from painting and modelling.

I plan to make an '11th' Company. I don't want to replace my 3rd Co and don't see a Company completely replaced. I'm my version of 'reality' the Primaris just get stuck into their own Companies. Glad to see you still here. I've hardly been on dakdak recently but I'm feeling like getting my toys out again. It was my birthday on Friday and we played a game for the 1st time in ages and it was nice, got to try out my new Codex a bit. Game itself was a bit of debacle but I might write about it more later.

I think in their squads of five for building, the first 5 are nearly built now. I generally halve a unit when painting it. I'll paint the 3 dudes first and then the Sarge and AGL guy. That makes it manageable ish. I'm vaguely building a Company's worth of these guys but with no rush or urgency. I've collected most of the Infantry already without especially trying (5 man squads however).

Thanks for your comments it's nice to chat again.

In other news Hero Forge had an Xmas sale and I'd already idly designed my DnD (well, Pathfinder) character on their system. For $3.99 I got a downloadable file that I sent to a friend (who posts on here but I'll let them introduce themselves if they want as they might not want to be identified because of the next bit..) who very nicely ran me off a few on his 3D printer..

This is my cleric of Hanspur, called Euron (I'm original), the first one has a glitch on the pommel of the trident (my god's favoured weapon), the 2nd is fine and the 3rd ready for any conversions. I'll try to paint him soon.

He also kindly chucked in a test print he was doing of some terrain. I don't know how long those railing will last but it's great print quality.

This is the cheeky one. An Executioner turret, I can convert my Repulsor transport to the shooty version. I may get the one next month in Conquest! as well. There's a 4 issue release of a Repulsor but the final issue is only the base, so you can get it by buying 3 issues (£24, rather than £50 or £60 for the Executioner). Mods feel free to delete this bit if it infringes something I don't know Dak's stance on 3D printing. The finish is a bit vinyl-ie and may need some filing or heavy handed undercoating but we'll see how it comes out.

Normally I don't do this sort of thing but the cost of the new Primaris line is out of control really. The Impulsor (basically a Rhino) costs £45, the same as a Land Raider did until it also got a price hike to £50. So £90 to transport 12 dudes? I'm currently torn about whether to build my new Medic or to trade him in for an Impulsor (or whatever) as I'm not sure how much I'd use him. Equally I would like to convert him (slightly) and maybe try him out in a few games, I'm torn. He costs a reassuring £22.50 just for himself which is pretty bonkers. I keep oscillating on this one, anyone had good times with Medics?

How do you feel about 3D printing? It's increasingly an elephant in the room. The new AdMech transport had a 3D copy for sale before the actual model went live, all done from the pre order pics apparently. Other's have said the increase in long barrelled weapons for SM (stubbers and autocannon which they've never really had before) is to make them harder to print. I don't know but it's becoming more accessible all the time and even in colour now too. GW will be under increasing pressure to react and I have no idea what the right move will be.

Anyway I'm still building my Inters, more on them soon.

I don’t think I’ve fielded my medic in a while. Not because there is anything wrong with him, he just doesn’t often make it into the lists.

The price is getting out of hand. I think of repulsors more as floating LRs, so being priced the same doesn’t bother me. Granted, the price on LRs is getting a bit crazy. But not as bad as the character packs. $30-40 for one guy is bonkers. But it was getting there before the primaris. I was boycotting the last line of plastic marine HQs when they priced up to $30 a pop. But I remember when you could get 30 marines for $20, so my perspective is a bit skewed.

3D printing is getting easier and cheeper. But it’s not mainstream yet, and will have years to go. Looks like you have access to a resin printer, which is better for minis. With my filiment printer I noticed a LOT of cleanup is required, and you still are going to get some layer lines. Sure I can pop things off for pennies on the dollar compared to buying, but the quality is a lot lower, and it takes a lot of effort to get it fit for the table.

This is my thinking on the Medic, would I replace a LT with one? Probably not. Do I lose other stuff to make room? What stuff is there to cut in a Primaris list?. However if I'm making the entire company I'll need one eventually! And I fancy building him. It was a generous gift from Alex and I'm very grateful, don't misunderstand me please! Just working out my options.

Repulsors costing the same as Land Raiders is one thing but the Rhino replacement costing (nearly) the same as Land Raiders is another.

I forgot you had a printer, what's the diff between Resin and Filaments? Which is supposed to be more accurate? Feel free not to answer. I'll catch up on your blog soon too!

More building has been happening..

These guys are nearly done, I've replaced the scopeless bolt rifles on the EtB Inters with spares from the proper kit. The guy on the right had to have his hand extended slightly awkwardly to make it all fit, I'll tidy up the GS and I think it will be ok once painted. The Sarge is done and I think he looks suitably imposing. I'm always surprised, watching battle reports and stuff, how few people equip their Inter Sarges with any CC kit. Charging, this guy has as many attacks as a OG Captain on his profile. That's pretty good for a Sarge....I've added some grenades (off the Reiver sprue) and other kit to the Inters to, again, differentiate them from the basic builds.

The grenade launcher is pretty much built. Same as before, half IG grenade launcher and half SM sniper rifle. The hand is one of the many pointing hands with the hand rotated at the wrist and finger removed. The angle doesn't quite work really with the interactions of stocks on pauldrons and where it needs to be to sit in his hand, but from the 'viewing angle' it looks fine. I'm using a strap from the sniper rifles to add to the other Inters bolter to add interest...

The next squad is underway too. I'm using some Hellblaster bodies in the Inter squads to help keep everything varied, I need to do some hacking to get bolter arms to fit but nothing extreme. I also added some purity seals and kit too (not especially evident here). I've a 'proper' AGL in this unit....

Rough build on the Sarge. Another fister....

I added a purity seal to cover up some of the joins.

I've started painting the first unit and spraying the 2nd. I've another 5 Inters bluetacked and 5 HellB's too. I'm thinking Eliminators are best to build next as I'm likely to use them soon and I'd like one for KT, a Sniper specialist is a straight swap for the Reiver combat specialist I was using. Poor Reivers. I do have 5 of them on sprues but they are pretty low down on the priorities scale, they really are the 'ginger haired step child' of the SM Codex.

I'm also building a LT, more on him next.

Thanks! I wanted them to look different.

Here is my bluetacked LT..the head is from the Repulsor kit..

I cut the kit off his back here and attached a spare helmet to his waist. The body is from the Standard Bearer. If I build one I want it to be different anyway, and I'm in no rush to make another banner.

I added a pistol and a little bit of kit off the new Ultra sprue I got from Alex..I cut off the strap as it's hanging the wrong way, I'm having the gun down rather than held up. I plan to just reverse it.

I had to force the angle of the arm a bit and I decided to cuff off the original pauldron to replace it with a fancy one...

I wanted him to look like he's waving forward an advance rather than at his mum, not sure it's right...

I tried out a few of the new pauldrons, seen here with a Gravis one from the new upgrade sprue....

But settled on my original choice from the Inters sprue, the braid looks officer-y...

I think he'll do. It's nice to see something different than the usual LT 'flaptop with pistol' guy...

I added a tilting plate thing, it's a smaller one (that's what she said) from the BaC set I believe. I reattached the strap too, but not before I snapped it. I also added a purity seal to his leg..

Hope you like! Some painting has started on the 1st squad of Inters but not much yet, more soonish!

Progress report:

Painted my little Hero Forge 3D printed guy for Pathfinder, it was the first thing I've painted with my new fancy Windsor and Newton Series 7 brushes. They seem to make a difference and are much easier to manipulate the paint with, I've not done any super fiddly stuff with them yet but think they will help. Gold and blue are the colours of my god and I tried to make him look suntanned/weather beaten.

In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium these guys have been inked and dry brushed...

These guys have been basecoated..

And here inked on the detail areas and some highlighting applied..I still refining my 'thinning of paints' after not really using it. I see now how it's much better for edge highlighting but am still getting used to it. I expect painting 100 or so Primaris will give me the opportunity to practice...

Haven't had much of a chance recently so hopefully more soon.

Mr. Fork is looking good! I think HeroForge (and 3d printing in general) is great for D&D/Pathfinder/etc. You have a vision of what your character is, but it can be hard to find a pre-existing model that matches. Sometimes you have to settle on “close enough” especially if you want something off the beaten path. If you have access to your own printer, you could also scale up as the campaign rolls on. (I loved the concept Ral Partha had when they sold minis in 3 packs of the same guy progressing) Got a suit of full plate or switched from a mace to a hammer? Time for a fresh print!

To answer your question from upthread (in a very rough manner, as I am far from an expert)

Filament printers have a print head on a xyz axis that zooms around the lays down thin layers of melted plastic. Advantage is that they cost less, there is no mess/smell, and they are easy to use.

Resin printers use a UV sensitive goop and lights/black magic to cure the stuff solid in very thin layers. You get much finer detail, but have to deal with smelly chemicals (with the cleaning and handling issues that come with). They are also more expensive, both as machines and per-print. But if you are willing to deal with the hassle, probably better for miniature scale work for anything other then bulk terrain.

Marines are looking great, as always. Courage and Honour!

Thanks! I try to be distinct in painting the most common chapter. They never used to be and I wonder why GW kicked the BA from the poster boy slot. Maybe as the Ultras were easier to explain/more acceptable to parents/incoming masses as their popularity increased, ie not having 'blood' in their name. This is my 2nd squad of Inters, I did one early last year primarily for KT. I'm now adding them as formations for 40k. Thanks for commenting and I hope you like the more completed pics.

Seen here mostly done (..........mostly etc).

And here pretty much done. I may add a bit of flecks, chips etc we'll see. The new brushes are really nice to use and keep their point so well. Should have got some earlier.

Basic work is progressing on the other 2 guys, hopefully they'll paint themselves soon. The next squad is sprayed black too but I may jump the queue and do the Eliminators next as they'll be in more demand than a 3rd Inters squad....

Yes they complement wargaming well as they taste great in the short term but ultimately leave you feeling sickened and hollow.

Speaking of which, I've had a bit of time for painting and the last two of the 2nd Inters squad is ticking along, all the time I'm saving painting less models (ie not a 10 man Tack) is being lost painting them to a higher standard..

Starting to get bored of these guys, but they are nearly done and then I get to build some Eliminators, which will be more fun (and I won't paint them blue which will be nice for a change). I may go back over the unit and do some flecking/mud, not sure yet.

Just a little update, hopefully finish these 5 Inters before I go away next week for half term.

Yo.

So these guys are pretty much there now..some progress pics:

Face. I've added a red glaze over the scar bit..

This pic a bit bleached by too much light really. I've been trying to do these guys to a nice level and so the heads are getting a lot of attention..

Here it is in situ, nearing completion...

The other guy too...

I decided to add some stubble on top of his head a did a light glaze, slightly washed out here..

Slightly more visible here, he looks like Vinny Jones in this one.

They should be done tonight and I'll hopefully get time to photograph them too. I'm off for a week tomorrow but might get to write it up when I'm away. Hope you like.

Next up; Eliminators.
