I don't give it out, but even if I did, you wouldn't get the same world, as different areas of the world have been generated by different versions of the game (1.0-1.6). So generating it again now would likely get different results.

I reluctantly ask, does anyone know if the XBox 360 version is going to get bigger worlds? They recently made them twice as tall. I'm sure millions of gamers will be raving about that, but I was quite put out; what does having twice as much thin air achieve?

Upcoming work for 2022:

* Battle Sisters story (untitled)
* T'au story: Full Metal Fury

So.....
Minecraft 1.7: The Update that Changed the World

The Pre-release is out and the full release of 1.7 is currently scheduled for this Friday. Thanks for the short notice Mojang!

However, there are always minor updates shortly after the first release (i.e. we are currently on 1.6.4) and there's also been so many major changes to the underlying code that I'd prefer to wait at least a few days for the inevitable patches before updating the server.

Now, on to the more pressing subject, "the update that changed the world". This update brings major changes to the biome generation. In order to get access to the new biomes people would either have to travel at least 2000 blocks from spawn, or, we could reset the world.

If we were to stick with the existing world, I would probably set up at least two command block "teleporters" for quick travel between the normal spawn and the new terrain. The downside to this is that it's just a bit messy, a bigger world size for backups etc and the map would still center on the original spawn. However, it would be just two minutes work for me and everyone's stuff is still there without me doing anything.

If we were to reset the world, I would copy across any structures that people want preserving, just as I did when we reset the world for Minecraft 1.0 (also allowing people to choose where they want to go). The downside to this (well, for me) is that I have to spend a lot of time doing that. The downside for you people is the short notice that Mojang have given - if some people are away for the next week or so, they might miss a chance to get their stuff copied (I might open up a "second chance", later for copying any structures that got left behind). However, the server would have a fresh new spawn and a new Nether (Quartz!), new End (Dragon!) and it would be a good fresh start.

I'm still thinking this over, but I'd like your opinions too, so...

Click here, vote for whether to reset or not

However! I reserve the right to overrule the vote if, say, I think the server demands of maintaining the existing world to be too high (disk space, backups, map size, etc), or if I think the personal time and effort involved in copying structures in a reset would be too much, etc etc.

I say reset, if you could copy my house somewhere by wherever Noobboomb's place ends up going. If it could be on a hill surrounded by water, that'd be doubly cool.

If we do a reset, I'll be taking structure requests in a new separate thread, so hold off on any requests like that for now

I voted for a reset. However, because of the new end, shall I dismantle the ender grinder and keep the materials for a new one whenever there is a need for it again? I'm thinking an updated, more efficient farm than eve before!

I've stripped most of my stuff too Dark, so you won't have to copy a lot over.

I'm voting for a reset too, whilst I have fond memories of this current world I feel the new biomes, easy quartz access and various other things outweighs my personal attachment to the world as it stands. Not to mention making the Nether walkways easier to navigate...

I would love for a reset. But Alas. I will lose my villager area, and my entire cities will be gone... As long as I get my 150 diamonds and 2595 iron ignots... Unless I can just place all my stuff as blocks XD. Actually.... .

But yeah reset. I will miss my horses I spent a long time getting them together. And also I have an underground complex.... I would really like to save that.

I would help. We could use the connected textures of Glass and Iron Bars. And we could use quartz and stone bricks in unison.

I hope I get to keep my capital. Took me too long to build. With the very few resources I had.

Most of my stuff is underground, and spread over 4000+ blocks north-south... I don't think it'd survive a reset. :(

Don't make the same mistake. never use glass in the Nether. And I think more than an overall plan for the full Nether system, if we simply figured out a single tunnel and intersection style, we'd at least be able to have it look right.

I'm partial to the 3-wide 3-tall tunnels where the center of the walls are the iron bars- it works well with the Nether Fortresses.

Dark'll just have to find you a new Ravine complex.

Or maybe you could re-locate Chasmholm to a Clay Mesa biome! That'd be pretty neat to have a Dwarven city carved into the multi-colored cliff faces.

Yeah, pretty much *all* the 5-6 massive ravines are now 'finished' with dressed stone galleries & so on, though, and joined with similar corridors and hallways. Dark'd need to transfer sections that in some cases go from just above bedrock to slightly above the clouds. Just sounds like a lot of extra work for him.

would it just be structures copied across or would we be allowed to bring some of our valuables across?

maybe a single or double chest filled with whatever we want and take a screen shot of the chest open and send it to Dark.

as long as i can get dropped into a plains biome with horses i'll be happy

can horses be copied over? they are within my building

All items & persistent entities (i.e. any passive mobs such as horses, villagers, sheep, etc) within a structure would be copied over.

I'm not going to go emptying people's chests, it doesn't make sense and I just wouldn't have time.

Ian Sturrock, I shall do a "feasibility study" of your ravines :-P

I'm going to leave the survey running until this evening and then will let you all know my decision. Yeah it's a short time for the survey, but the update is also short notice and I need to make a decision soon

I started building all my stuff because of the lay of the land on the server. The wall blocks the only land-based entrance, there's a nice island for a castle, and a river acting as a natural border along which I can place watchtowers.

Copying my structures across is pointless unless there's an identical area on the new server, and copying an entire area over is bound to be more trouble than it's worth.

But then, generating the new terrain is going to be a PITA.

I'm honestly torn. =|

For the nether I was thinking along the lines of circles that I did for my own nether hub with branch offs from it. I have plans to NOT use quartz as it is a complete pain to gather enough of it to build what I am planning.

Would there be a way to not copy over someones structures (if, say, the structures are really terrain-dependent) but also make sure that the person that built them wouldn't lose all their bricks? Or is that not doable?

dismantle everything into a few chests inside a small house, then ask dark to copy that over?

It's probably either that you've clicked the "Super Secret settings" button in the options menu and enabled a cartoony filter, or that the new mipmapping and/or anti-aliasing render settings look strange to you. See Seth Bling's demonstration of all those things in this video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=bnv7wI-7jGE#t=96 You can press F4 to disable the Super Secret settings quickly.

IHateNids wrote:also, as far as the Nether is concerned, what is to happen with our portals?

Portals would be copied over in structures, but wouldn't link to a corresponding portal in the nether. When someone first uses one, it would create a new portal in the new nether. The next person to use one might end up linking to that first person's portal (if they are too close), so portals would have to be linked using Minecraft's standard divide by 8 method.

That's one option, but I might consider re-imbursing those who have truly terrain dependent builds (like Ian Sturrock, Avatar, etc). I'll think about it.

Anyway, on to the results of the survey:

Looks rather decisive and I'm in agreement despite the work involved.

The world will be reset for 1.7.1 (or whatever number they're up to by the time of release )

I'll set up a separate thread for structure requests soon, I'll post in this thread with a link to it when I'm ready. I will probably also do the creative-mode-free-for-all-mayhem thing like last time, but not yet, so don't go all crazy smashing up the place just yet...

will you be providing an early map preview like you did for the FTB reset? I am not sure what the new 1.7 biomes are nor what they look like, plus i might see a cool spot on the map that i might want to be plunked down into.

As the new launcher now allows for easy swapping between Minecraft versions using profiles, I am considering setting up a temporary version of the new world, for people to join, explore and pick a spot. I'd still have the map too, for people who aren't inclined for messing about with profiles.

Once I'd finished getting copies of everyone's structures, I would then take down the 1.7 world, paste in the structures where requested (in the meantime people could switch back to 1.6 for creative mayhem on the old server) and once done, bring it up again.

This would also allow people to switch between 1.6.4 and 1.7 to double check the size/shape of their structure and their chosen spot.

I would probably have to set a deadline to prevent indecisive people taking too long to pick a spot though

I'll still also allow people to request "surprise me" choices for their locations, like "any plains biome" etc.

Sound like a good idea?
