Thanks Galorn :-) that's a real nice thing to say! I will admit i'm a little stuck on my Shrine model as to what colour to paint the main eagle on the front? I was thinking either black & glossy with gold detailing or a marble effect? I do have a small statue i'm going to use in a fountain I want to do marble and don't want to overdo it though? hmmmm tough decisions!

I want to make a fountain yep, a fountain, I can buy one but i need to hone some terrain skills, so i thought i'd experiment with some things, first to find a suitable base for the project, at the local Bunnings i grabbed a bunch of plumbing and connecting things, pipes etc. in this lot was a cap for a pipe good size not too high or wide, enough space in the middle to make a stand for a statue later on, now for the bricks or stone to go around it, greenstuff? no, too sticky and i don't like it for larger jobs, I thought i'd make some bricks myself somehow? after a bit of searching i found that an air dry clay would be suitable for my needs, so, off i went to get some

I rolled it out and cut it with the side of a ruler to get the shapes of the bricks and then used my scalpel to do gentle scoring to give it some texture then ran my finger over it to look kind of aged and worn.

that's as far as i've gotten, bricks are nearly dry now so then i'll attach them and grab some pics!

another easy way to add a kind of "stoney" texture is to take of aluminum foil crumple it into a ball then roll it across the surface you are trying to texture.

Now, that's a very good idea! I never thought of that (obviously) i'll give that a whirl next time if this doesn't look right! the other problem was getting the bricks all the same, as when you cut with a scalpel it draws the edge slightly, that's why i used a ruler instead to push down, maybe if i can find a sieve or similar with the right size rectangles i can use it to push down on another attempt?

Oh, I also started this thread with terrain inspiration, thought it might be useful to some of the league and terrain guys! :-)

Did a little more on the fountain, I used all purpose filler to act as mortar to stick the bricks too, it looks pretty rough and i'll use more to use as grout between them and smooth it out a bit more as i go when it dries overnight

You can also try your local Hardwar store for 6, 11 or 14?mm square mesh (those are the standards anyway)

wow nerdfest... that is looking damn cool... ! i am working atm myself on a fountain... it´s for the leagues scratchbuilding second competitions price for mr.merlin... i am not going the brickwork route but the riveted steal plate route... riveting was obligatory^^

the air dry clay bricks look better than i thought... i hope the connection between plastic and filler will stay strong... ... for jobs as these i also worked with FIMO... and made sandbags and bricks too...even cobblestones once... will it have a base?

also... a trick for the fountains water "spitters" is to use nylon string as a means to support and guide the watereffect... IF you dont want to loose that much money in watereffects ... like me then i can suggest using either PVA and let it dry... and then paint over completly... or use window color clear ... this will be like hardcoating it... the windowcolor simmulates the water stream... and it hardens suitably... i did some muddy squishy bases with this already...

good luck with the further works on that cool project!!!

Hey Vik! :-) cheers mate! I have a bottle of water effect about half full still, i bought it years ago when it was the big bottle (and it was still expensive!) I'd love to try the water spouts and i think i will!

I'm hoping the bricks work out to look a little bit less juvenile and amateurish when I'm done? i'm still learning the properties of the bits I got, so whether to coat it all in pva glue to seal it or if it doesn't need it etc.

Interesting, I'll have to try it. Beats the crappy slow way I was doing it before.

Sweet, more terrain building. I REALLY need to get off my ass and build some Orky terrain. I only have "3" and I say that in quotes because they are only a pile of random junk....so kindda Orky, but also something you could see on any battlefield

if push comes to shove and the dried brick still look too "juvenille" as you put it... brush slighty over them with a steel brush... the one you would use for cleaning grills and stuff...

and well if you still have it... then this will be cool... !!!

Well boys, I used more spak filla to grout the bricks and it looks much better pics tomorrow of progress! also made the center stand and put bricks around it too, i think it'll work! even if it will look more 'fantasy' than gothic! i'll put a plaque on it or something special

Not sure about yours but my local hardware store stocks brass "pipe" in a rectangular shape that makes a perfect 28mm brick stamp.

Pics of the fountain progress, covered the bricks in a thin coat of spak filla and then wiped it off and pushed it down into the gaps, it looks much better now! then i pushed some small tubing into the sides of the middle section to act as spouts.

I also started more on my shrine, I wanted to give the building a regal look so I'm painting gold around a lot of the window arches.

Next is to wash the gold and re highlight them, then start work on the best bit imo, I'm going to try and give the eagle a marble finish!

the arches look really expensive now!!!

and those bricks... how are you intending to paint them? no easy way around that i think...

Hey Vik, thanks man, I like the gold windows, once i've done some more work it'll be pretty impressive me thinks!

not 100% on the bricks yet, I think i'll seal, them and then prime and layer multiple dry brush passes? maybe even try doing them in a red tone and copy the brick wall in my other thread?

hmmm... i think the mortar lines are the big obstacle here... they are quite wide... for drybrushings... i think you will fare better with just plain painting them...

so i gather you will do this in red brickstones then?

Chaplain with Hate to Spare

yeah thinking about it, as it's an experiment I've got nothing to lose, so dark mortar and red bricks with a gold plaque and marble statue on top?

Like the gold. I did verdigris for my honoured imperium statue, well worth it and there's decent tutorials our there. Doing it back to front works well (as in starting light, then through dark tones, then metal last).

Just throwing this out there, but if i were to one day obtain a DKoK Commissar, and want to paint him (as you would) does anyone have any slightly different ideas for painting him up? I do like the dirty greens and browns commonly seen but I'd be inclined to make him lighter (if I obtained one of course!) and have him in grey fatigues/trenchcoat with red lapels, gold brocade with a tan gas mask and red glass lenses? thoughts?...

We now return you to your normal scheduled Nerdblogging!

Yep, got some paint on a Hellbrute I bought for a mate of mine! I think it's a fair swap, I help him sort out a Chaos army and show him how to paint them, and he gave me...... a PS3! sweeeeet! anyway, he chose the Iron Warriors as they'd be an easier scheme to learn and he liked the aesthetics of them and the fluff which now gave me a perfect opportunity to try my hand at a few things, first.... chaos....second,....Iron Warriors, thirdly,........translucent skin!

I was kinda inspired and egged on to try this by reading Mechanicum Jon's thread and seeing the veins on his Grotesques (which look great btw Jon!) I had these images of flesh and machine merged and melding together and the Hellbrute is the perfect vehicle for the imagery i imagined, large bulging flesh areas with armour minimal but prominent, not too many spikey bits etc,

anyway, this is what i've done so far today, I primed white, then washed the whole model with a watered down mix of Baal red, Leviathan purple, Ogryn flesh, mainly to see where i need to paint and to start adding the shades , then i went to bed..... slept for 2.5 hours and got up again! .... made a coffee ( a Gweneth Paltrow style) and got back into the model using a fine brush i added the start of my veins using Baal red slightly thinned, then went over them again with pure Baal focusing on the 'intersections' of the veins, over this I then went with Leviathan purple and traced out all the veins again using the same theory and adding a few more lines running off from the previous veins, lastly I went over them again with Asurmen blue and darkened more areas of them and yet again added small pale blue veins, I wanted a sort of realistic look to the flesh with a bit of ott style so i looked at pictures of elderly peoples varicose veins and shamefully Bane from the old crappy Batman and Robin movie

That's so far today, I still need to add some darker shading to the flesh and glaze with purple/red then knock it back with a flesh glaze maybe? then it's armour time! I plan on making it quite worn and beaten with rust pitting and i think gleaming white horns would look good with the painting? only thing i'm unsure of is his face? should i leave it blending in with the flesh or try and make it appear more scarified but still blending in? colour etc.?

well, hope you like the progress so far! more on the morrow bro's!

Ooh, fleshy. Maybe consider a sepia wash before the glaze to add a bit more depth? Love the wash approach though.
