Thanks! I'm a bit sick of zombies now, so I'm looking forward to moving on to some vampire infantry and cavalry for a bit once these bases are done! The blue may need some highlights as it's pretty dark... but it depends how I lay out the stands, as things in the middle won't need so much in the way of detailing.

Thanks! I get the lore behind the AoS zombies, and quite like it... it's just I would rather only one or two appeared like that rather than half the box! The rest are really nice zombies that paint up quickly when introduced to contrast paints and washes!

Where's the best forum for KoW btw? kowforum.com seems quite quiet, though I did find your battle report thread

Today was a very important step forward. I finished the first batch of bases for the army!

Before:

After:

In here we have two Regiments of skeletons (yes, I know they aren't the best...). The first has enough to be ok. The second could still do with a couple more skeletons adding, so I need to do some printing tonight as I don't want to add spears into the hand weapon regiments.

and side by side they look pretty good as a Horde

There's a Skeleton spear Troop

A ghoul Regiment

and a Lykanis. Again, I know they aren't supposed to be very good, but I had the old Forgeworld Skin Wolf painted up, so I base it up anyway. I have three more in different poses, so a Regiment of Werewolves will be coming at some point.

Hell yea! The Undead look very nice based up, such a nice variety in those skeleton regiments, and I dig the ghast hanging out with the ghouls. Skinwalker looks grand! And I'm a big fan of Lykanis - this edition is very kind to large infantry heroes, the big wolves probably just lose out because they're a touch expensive? Speed + nimble means they can insert themselves into lots of awkward places.

As for KOW on the web, kowforum.com is the forum, otherwise you're looking at Kings of War Fanatics on Facebook for the vast majority of posts. Yes, I hate FB groups too, what a terrible replacement for forums, but such is life in our dystopian hellscape.

Interesting to hear your take on them. That seems to be different to the other responses I read, so I won't feel so bad about spending time on them then
Given that this is mostly a modelling challenge, I'm not ever so worried anyway, but it's nice to know they could at least be useful.

At some point, when I've got enough for a reasonable force based, I'll see if our local gaming club does KoW at all. Pretty sure it does... it's been so long since I last went I don't know any more

A little bit of visible progress. this week a box of the Fireforge zombie peasants arrived to bulk out the zombies a bit more and allow for a really big base to be created. They are really nice models to put together and scale nicely with the printed ones. The new GW ones are still dainty in comparison it that's fine. These things happen in real life too. I also realised we'd I have 5 metal zombies from Crooked Dice, so there are another 23 zombies on the painting table!

In order to carry on making some visible progress, I rebased my Ghoul king. The plan is to use him as a Goreblight. I can't think of anything else to use him for...

All the zombies is making me crave some colour, so I printed off some of the Highlands Miniatures human muskets and painted one sample in Ostermark colours. I picked Ostermark because I haven't had a bright army before, and I certainly haven't done a bright purple like that. There is the added bonus that Ostermark is right next to Kislev, so they would work nicely with anything that comes out for The Old World ... Whenever that releases! As such, I think the empire units are not going to be multi-base... Which is a bit of a shame as I liked doing the undead ones so far, but would like to make a slow start on something usable in WFB/WAP. I also have my eye on the landsknecht ogres from Wargames Atlantic.

I am not sure about the armour. It feels like it should be blackened... But that then dulls the model down, which is not what I want for this army.

Good looking Ostermark dude! I think the armor is totally fine, or at least it's not super bright in the photo as I'm seeing it.

Cheers on the Ghoulblight, smart use of the big lad

Thanks! The printer has been busy over the last few days, so I now have a general, a unit of rifles, a unit of swords and a unit of archers to paint. A steam tank may well have turned up in the post today as well.

So much for not starting new projects until I'd cleaned out my office a bit!

There has, thankfully, been some movement on the Empire side of things this week thanks to two of the newer contrast colours. The new yellow and purple are both really nice. Much richer colours and much better coverage than some of the earlier ones, especially when using some of the older ones to provide a darker shade. The colours aren't showing amazingly well in the quick snap, but it's a start to the Ostermark army

I've decided not to do the Empire force on the KoW multi-bases so that they will, hopefully, be usable in The Old World, when it eventually comes out. It's one of the reasons for selecting Ostermark as well as it's sat right next to Kislev and, if the Total War 3 concept art (and army) is anything to go by that should be a fun one to paint up as some allies. The old winged lancers (which Highlands also have a version of) also fit nicely into the Empire army as another generic knight type until then.

Once the big pile of magnets and bases turn up I'll be having a play to see what basing scheme I want to go for. I've seen some nice woodland ones that might be cool, but similarly a cursed city theme, like the undead, could also be good. In the mean time, the printing goes on for some more units. No real plan, other than things I like

Glorious colours, behold the rhubarb and custard legion!! I would go for cobbled style basing, myself, but woodland could work well too - green scrub will contrast well with the scheme.

Cobbles would be my first choice, but the amount of blood that flowed making the cobbled for the multibases I'm not sure I have enough to deal with all the smaller ones

You could try contacting http://champindustries.net/. I got bases from them 10+ years ago, the website is still up and looks good. The bases were a perfect match for the GW rounds in size (only 25mm) but they have a flagstone style base which would work.

Edna would be an awesome empire engineer I'm sure there has to be a 3d version of her out there somewhere. Plus whenever you use her you can jump up on the chair and scream "Go! Fight! Win!"

Thanks! I feel some digital kitbashing coming on to make her look more Empire-ish over Christmas. Assuming I don't get distracted... me? Distracte...

Anyway. I finished up the last 6 skeletons to go onto the KoW bases, bringing them up a bit more in figure count. One is now on 18, the other on 17. Both look rather full now, so that'll do. I did, however, forget to check this photo was in focus before sticking them all onto the bases!

I think I'm also now done with the handgunners until their bases turn up in the post; with the sole exception of the standard. I need to work out what's going on there as it's currently a flag of surrender... which is not what we're going for here!

And an Engineer (just spotted some metal that has leaked onto the wooden stock of his rifle that needs fixing!)

I printed them at 90%, so they now fit really well. At their default size they are good for AoS.

Oh, I accidentally dropped one of the huntsmen last night and the bow shattered... so I'm down to 9 archers, but they are about 60% complete thanks to learning that the new purple works much better if you absolutely flood the area rather than paint it on smoothly. This causes it to really pull back into the shadows and expose highlights. (the handgunners were multiple paints for the same effect) The yellow doesn't seem to make such a visible distinction though, so requires some shading and highlights.

I've had some good success recently using DAS air-drying clay and a 3d printed texture roller and round cutter to mass-produce some base toppers (and dungeon tiles), takes a while to dry but the actual production time is around 8-10 minutes tops for a dozen bases, and the clay is super cheap (around £4-5 a kilo) and holds detail nicely. There are some good free texture rollers on MMF too, including cobbles of various types: https://www.myminifactory.com/users/randommakingencounters

Might be worth a look for an army-wide project, as it's by far the fastest way I've found to churn out a bunch of varied, detailed bases (compared to printing them or old-school sand/flock/rock basing methods). You could even kill two birds with one stone if you're still doing movement trays/multibasing, roll out clay to the size you want, use a 25mm cutter to extract base toppers, and you've now got a topper for the movement tray as well with holes already in place for the minis, with a matching texture.

I have been looking at clay and rollers, yes. I've found a couple of interesting looking cobblestone ones; I just need to find a day where I can leave the heating on for about 15 hours to print them as the resin printer is really not liking the low night time temperatures at the moment. I found an interesting patreon that is doing lots of texture rollers, including detail ones for adding variety; as well as square and round cutters... and lo. They go and announce a town set for January

Merry christmas to you all!

We've been away for the last few days, so no real progress in actual painting, but I did manage to use the time effectively.

In the Empire uniforms book from years back there was an Osterland elite unit called the Death's Heads that were experts at hunting vampires. In order to prevent anyone finding out who they were and getting revenge on their families, they all took to wearing skull masks. They also have much flouncier hats and feathers than the normal halberds, so they will make an interesting second unit. To get the flounce, I took the heads from the greatsword kit and added part of a skull ring I found on Thingiverse

I've also added the same skull onto some shields to showcase their elite status by having more armour.

In order to try and stay a bit more on track, I've created an army plan as this seemed to work back in the Guard days... here's where we are starting from
