Yep, the plan is to eventually add some berserkers, some archers and some spearmen into the mix as well in order to bring it up to a 6 point force as well as adding some ranged support for Frostgrave. Dual duty is great
Speaking of Multi-duty... here are two necromancers for Frostgrave/Black Plague and Dungeon Saga
The larger one is the Black Plague necromancer, the smaller is Mortibris from Dungeon Saga. Photos do not do the larger one justice... :/

Thanks! It has been a while since I last posted anything. The only reason painting has been done recently is an annual "try and clear some backlog" challenge on blogger... which seems to be going fairly well so far. Only a few more weeks left on that though, which should free up some time for the return of the Malfians and a Stealer cult

So, after a few months of manic projects the stupid butterfly brain decided that the Stealer Cult wasn't "the thing" to be painting at the moment. I still love the models and will be getting back to those, but my wallet slipped and bought Calth and Knights:Renegade to add to the growing pile of sprues in the corner.
I'm not sure why Calth ended up in there as previous attempts at a Space Marine army ended in me selling it all off in a fit of I-Can't-Be-Bothered due to all the power armour. I can't settle on which Legion(s) to paint up the box in. I don't really want Ultramarines and I've been painting a lot of other red stuff recently, so Word Bearers are fairly low down on the list too.
At the moment I'm swinging wildly between Raven Guard, Imperial Fists or Death Guard. I always felt sorry for the Thousand Sons, but... red. Death Guard I've painted a bit before and they were ok. The other two were new to me, so I decided to have a go with some test models.
The Raven is really tricky to photograph quickly. In person there is a lot of highlighting... but obviously not enough. I think this plan is going out of the window as they will end up being too similar to the Deathwatch models. Last night I Was really pleased with the browny yellow IF, rather than the normal neon yellow that you see. In the sun this morning however... not so impressed. I think I need to pick up some of the new GW yellows and find another test model to work out.
I may be picking people's brains on airbrushing these guys once I've worked out a better set of colours.

I'm not sure what is wrong with the IF (some of it may be just the photo) as the midtone is the old Iyanden Darksun, so should be a nice dull yellow. I'm wondering if the mistake was trying to use the VGC flesh wash to try and do some orangey shades and then a bone colour to lighten the mix up a bit for the highlights.

Thanks! The yellow is a bit too washed out for what I was intending. I was after a darker, but still strong tone. Thinking about it, the yellow I used to do on my red scorpions is about right
This was a base of the now long gone tau sept ochre. I still have a bit left, but not enough for a repeatable scheme. I need to pick up either some Balor brown or VMC ochre brown to see how they compare. From what I remember, these didn't quite match up though.
I also need to pick up some Yriel yellow as my yellows all seem to have gone missing. Automatically Appended Next Post: I also found a nice tutorial for a darker IF scheme using the same base colour on Centerpiece Miniatures; http://www.centerpieceminiatures.com/painting-imperial-fist/

I managed to get a bit more work done on the first group this evening, while watching a documentary about Joy Division. In the background you can see a gift from my boss as thanks for lots of hard work on a project recently. I felt he needed to be done up in pre heresy colours... None of this Crimson malarkey! Yeah, where there is red, like the stripe on the sergeant's helmet, it will be a very dark red to try and avoid McRines.
One thing I did forget to do (SHAME ON ME!) was to drill out the bolters prior to painting. I'm not entirely sure where my pin drill has gone though... so is that *really* forgetting? This will need to be done at a later date... very very carefully... when it turns up again.

The pads are missing because I've been painting them in 5 pieces: Torso/legs/arms, weapons, heads, pads, packs. Pads and packs are still to be done on the front 2. It is much easier this way around imo. Automatically Appended Next Post: Thraxas Of Turai wrote:I really like the look of these Imperial Fists, a nice subdued look suitable for the Heresy.

Thanks! Yeah, it was a good documentary. Really sad that no-one in the band paid any attention to his lyrical cry for help though :(

Over the weekend I started hacking together some of the other kits from BaC to make up some IF friendly units. The terminator quad is pretty bulk standard, so you don't get photos of that yet, apart from the assault cannon conversion
This used an old Dark Angels assault cannon from the upgrade sprue. It needed a bit of cleaning up as there were feathers and swords attached to parts of it, but fitting it to the terminator arm was fairly simple. One of the calth terminator arms was cut off just in from the wrist and shaved off a bit underneath and on the outside. The assault cannon was cut off following the rear edge of the gauntlet/support section and then the inside was carved off so that it would sit nicely over the Calth arm.
As I don't particularly want a chaplain-type figure, the dark apostle was converted into a legion character (not sure which one yet) carrying a relic blade and a Solarite gauntlet for extra close combat fun. I wanted to make the gauntlet look like the one in the 25th anniversary marine, but in the end decided to go with a FW power fist with all sorts of gubbins attached to make it look like it would produce some sort of fusion blast as the fist is coming in; hence hitting at I, instead of with other power fists.
Last night I had a chance to make a bit more progress on the painting side of things. The squad so far is coming along nicely, though I'm not sure what the new anniversary marine will be used as. It has to be artificer armour as it is so different to everything else, but I'm not sure what the weapon would be in HH terms
I need to get a move on with these, otherwise this is all going to be derailed when the new Warhammer Quest comes out. I keep saying I'm not going to buy any more stuff and then GW keeps releasing new board games that call to various parts of my youth... Genestealer cult; Renegade is basically the original Titan Legions and now a version of WQ? We also know that Necromunda is on the future release list... this only leaves Mordheim and my gaming history will be re-released in full!

So, a bit more work has been done on the Imperial Fists. The tacticals now have their pads and packs. They are just waiting for the test of their squad to be painted before I do transfers and bases. I still need to work out what to do with the banner thingy on his back.
The Terminators are nearly up to transfer stage. I'm having problems remembering exactly how I got the colours on the tactical squad, even though I wrote down the steps and colours... rather annoying to say the least. The assault cannon is looking pretty good though ( imo)
The terminator captain is being done in gold as some of the 30k stories refer to golden armour. I know this just means bright yellow, but I figured what else would a captain use to stand out? I didn't do any conversions on this one
Finally, here's the champion conversion
Sorry for the slightly fuzzy photos, but better than nothing, right? right?

Thanks! I'm pleased with the progress so far. Shame about the other 25 tacticals that need painting. Hopefully they will go a lot quicker as they don't really include all the black panels that the terminators are sporting.
Then I get to pick between Silver Tower or Renegades as the next mini project...

In an effort to get back on track and get this blog moving again, I'm going to try my damnedest to post something every day or two, however small. Girst micro update is some progress on the terminators from last night. The yellow is complete, the blacks are now greyed up and the metals basecoat has been done, so they are starting to come together nicely.
There are a few bits on the yellow that I'm not overly happy with, but there are transfers and damage still to go... So I can cover up the worst bits easily enough

This weekend has seen quite a bit of painting be completed. Sadly the lightbox is packed away at the moment so no real photos. Unfortunately the work that is left for them all is all transfer based and I don't have any Microsol left to deal with the shoulder pads... so they are now all on hold until a new batch arrives.
In the mean time, I decided to make a start on the bases
Automatically Appended Next Post: It was too hot (compared to normal) to do too much gardening today, so I dug out the lightbox instead, so lucky you, you get some better photos of the Marines so far.
As I mentioned earlier, I wanted to try and get them finished today, so I could start work on some other stuff, but no such luck. Turns out the decal liquids I have aren't as good as Microsol when it comes to shoulder pads, so I've had to put them on hold until Amazon delivers.
We'll start off with a nice group shot
This tactical squad still needs another 15 bodies adding to it before it is legit, but it is a start. I decided to hold off on doing more damage on anyone until after the transfers are on, otherwise those parts will look really clean
The Anniversary marine will probably end up in one of the tactical squads as ... something. Not sure what...
The terminators have a mixture of bare metal, gold and black plates so that each one is telling something about their past. I have no idea what that might be, but we can pretend, raight?
The champion
And finally the golden commander
I'm not so pleased with the highlighting on some of the golden elements. Turns out my silver is a bit blobby, even when thinned. I might need to replace it with a better one as well as trying the new golds from GW when I get to the contemptor and veterans
