Ledabot wrote: This thread seems to have gone downhill. This is less about anime and more about ecchi anime now. Started Fairy Tale again after dropping it a while back. I only got a few episodes in but its still good.!
Ecchi is fine, if done tastefully. It really annoys me in certain cases, like Dakara wa mumble mumble. There has to be a good reason to use it, and a good plot to support the mood switches that accompany it.
I'm a bit late to the party, but Evangelion is nice. It reminds me of my childhood so much, even though it was before my time. They used to put a lot of effort into things back in 1995, since they didn't have modern CGI to fall back on when they needed better animation. The intro is pretty advanced with all that transparency and synchronization.
Heck, I posted that right after finishing Kono Naka ni Hitori, Imouto ga Iru! It was very ecchi in places, but it was done very deliberately. Being a justified harem, the main had to figure out which of the girls was his sister without things getting too interesting. I still don't know if you can describe ecchi as tasteful though.

Saying that, by the Japanese definition of anime, Oban is actually anime, as anime is just the Japanese word for cartoon. Pretty good show mind you.
Also, does Love Hina contain any...X-Rated content? If so I might give it a miss.

I may have to watch this show now.
Lucky star is awesome. Most people don't understand us though. I swear its some kind of cult thing, like ponys for Japan or something.

OK, here's another question: what's the creepiest or most disturbing anime you've ever watched?

Admiral Valerian wrote: Personally, if I had to choose an anime from that time and age, I'd choose the Vision of Escaflowne over Evangelion. True, the latter has more attention, acclaim, and controversy, but Escaflowne has a touching story with very human and such well-developed characters.
Added it to my list! If you have any more suggestions, I'd be glad to hear them. There's a lot of things that are totally overlooked from that time period, and the only way to get a feel for them is to ask people who are old enough to remember.
Lol, I'm not that old, I'm only 20...I just like collecting and watching good anime DVDs
Let's start with mecha....I really recommend you find the 1981-1982 compilation movies of Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), the grand-daddy of all mecha anime (if you want super robot, ask someone else, not a big fan of those, sorry ). Compared to the TV series, it has faster-paced action and cleaner graphics (relative to the time period). I suppose you could watch Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) if you can find it, but I would recommend getting the 2005 compilation movies instead - improved graphics, cleaned-up story, faster-paced action. Then there's Super Dimension Fortress Macross (1983) and its Americanized version, Robotech. Both are good, but have different stories. The Robotech sagas are all on youtube, but for Macross I recommend you watch I Remember Love, its 1985 compilation movie with a cleaned-up story. Escaflowne, I really recommend, and of course Macross 7, if you don't mind watching recycled action scenes for good Japanese rock music. Turn A Gundam is however, the best mecha anime of the '90s IMO. The action scenes aren't that good, but the story and characters are so good they actually made me cry. As for the 21st Century, if you want to watch the Cosmic Era Gundam series, I suggest you only watch Gundam Seed. Gundam Seed Destiny has ripped-off mobile suit designs from older Gundam series, poor characters, and even more terrible story. Feel free to choose between Code Geass, and Gundam 00, though I prefer the latter. And there's Macross Frontier, the best mecha anime of the first decade of the 21st Century IMO - great graphics, good story, and good characters.
For non-mecha, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex Second Gig are both good, but with heavy political undertones (though I must admit, it very much influenced my views on cybernetics). Ah! My Goddess is a good choice for a romantic comedy (better than any other IMO), and Haibane Renmei if you're up for a sentimental, introspective anime.
Hello there, great post and good choices in shows. I would like to add a few though, for super robot I would suggest Space Runaway IDEON, great show by 'killem all Tomino'. Space Battleship Yamoto (aka Starblazers for us in North America who are older enough to remember watching it on TV in '83) is another show that I just can't get enough of.
I personally love Zeta Gundam it is one of the best UC Gundam series out there, the only thing that I didn't like about the reboot was that they changed the opening songs. I know why they did but 'Blue Star of Love' and 'The sign of Zeta' are two of the best opening songs for any show IMHO.
If you are into space battles I would suggest 'Legends of the Galactic Hero' Imagine space battles with 100,000 ships per side where the decadent -Space USA/UN- is battling the the -Space German Empire-(and no not space Nazi's think Imperial Germans from the 17-18th century). Great opening songs, great visuals, epic scope and plot, this show has it all. The only downside is its never been translated into English so if you don't like fan subs then well your SOL.
The original Bubblegum Crisis is another great cyberpunk show from the late80's early 90's while its pretty much your typical 'super heroine group' show it does have great music and background music. It also spawned AD Police which is a great side story and IMHO better then the original show.
If you like Shirow Masamune's Ghost in the Shell check out Black Magic M-66 and AppleSeed. 'Ol crotch shot Shirow' (read any of his manga's and you will see the name is apt) did a bang up job on both of these although I don't think AppleSeed 5 is ever coming out. =o\ I would love to see a OVA for each of the original stories in Ghost in the Shell from the manga I personally think there is so much to explore there that got glossed over in the original movie and they must know the nut cases out there like me would scoop it up in a heartbeat.
Great post just thought I would toss a few of my own suggestions in there. Here is some music from Bubblegum Crisis. This is one of the best songs in the show IMHO

The original BGC had much better music in most places than 2040 did... Yuu Asakawa 's attempt to sing 'Hurricane' made my ears bleed.

I just completed the anime "Rideback" and holy crap was it awesome. Developed, believable characters, cool machines, action and some killer animation. The setting's a little nuts... but with a little willing suspension of disbelief you're online for a hell of a ride.

Well, I just found out that a live action AKIRA films was being made. Unfortunately it's been canned. A pity.
Speaking of which I really ought to watch AKIRA.

Seemed appropriate to ask here but does anyone know if the Fist of the Northstar series ever came out on DVD? I loved that show many years ago. I know there is a movie but I want the series.
One thing I noticed while looking up anime on Netflix was that the majority of new stuff is very fantasy and/or horror related. I'm not really interested in any of that. I'm looking more for Robotech or Appleseed. Any suggestions?
If you more Appleseed why not go with Ghost in the Shell? Its the same author so there should be a lot of similarities. I'm not sure if you are referring to the Appleseed manga or movies though.
If you want more Robotech then go watch the original Macross and all of the ones after. I'd avoid Macross 7 like the plague though.

From what I'd heard about the development so far, that's a relief. Akira is not about 30 year old white men in New York.
Oh dear.
If the Triforce of Wisdom is correct and they are making a Neon Genesis Evangelion live action movie I hope they don't do that to it. Many of the plot elements and dark jokes wouldn't work if it wasn't set in Japan with Japanese actors. For example, Rei Ayanami is actually an over the top mocking caricature of outdated ideas of the ideal Japanese woman, loyal and stoic. Rei is not just loyal but also incredibly submissive, and is stoic to the point of emotionlessness.
A white cast would not work. Listen to us gods of Hollywood!

I heard some rumblings a few years back that James Cameron wanted to make a live action Battle Angel Alita movie, which had me pretty excited as it's easily pretty high up in my top 5 favorite manga of all time. I heard a subsequent rumor though that he'd decoded this after reading like 1 issue that featured motorball, and that left me kinda worried. I haven't been following up with it though since Avatar came out so I don't really know what the current status is.

I'm told the idea has resurfaced again.

so our anime club at uni had a slice of life night where we watched lucky star. all I can say is that it was a bit meh :/
I mean, ok it was cute and I enjoyed it for a while but after an episode's worth of cute anime girls chatting about feth all I was ready to just walk out :/ I suppose if you like listening to people talk then that’s fine but for me, well I want there to be some action/drama/whatever
checked out fairy tale which I have so say just seemed bad, or at least the first episode did. while I dont mind a bit of fan service here and there it gets a bit dull after a while so I'm giving that a miss too :'3 which is a shame as it was by the makers of rave master which as a kid I loved
same goes for dance in the vampire bund, that was just awful :/
as for creepy/fethed up anime, had a watch of gantz and dear god is it awful. It kinda seemed like the anime 13 year olds would watch if they can’t get past the parental filters on their computer. In short it’s guns with boobs with guns and shooting aliens in gory ways and then some boobs and heads exploding and naked old men in round, black super computers/armouries. Did I mention the guns and excessive gore……there’s that too
someone suggest a good anime before I lose faith in the genre :’3

As always, what do you want? Anime's the medium, not the content. If you haven't seen Stiens;Gate, I would say give that a go. Its very highly rated. If you get past the first episode, you should be ok from there, since the first episode is a little wtf.

Every time Basara would say to listen to his song I would be like, "Lol nope."
I think he is pretty much the most criminally self-absorbed, genocidally negligent "hero" I've ever seen in an anime.
This is so true. It made no sense that he was called a hero for essentially being selfish throughout the show. He gets worse in the OVA after the main show IMO.
Macross 7 is where the Macross series completely jumped the shark imho
Look at this madness.
Thank the Goddess we have Macross Frontier
Battle is from E7 and contains /minor/ spoilers if you're a complete berk, it also receives a CONTENT WARNING as there's brief flashes of a woman who's clad in hot pants and a tube top, if your delicate virgin eyes can't handle that... I got nothing for you.
