So many Animes have that problem though. It'll be this awesome series, and then you're like really? That's how you end it?

Five typical anime endings (can be in combinations):
Spoiler:

The Mind Screw, or Gainax, ending. This can either be due to a massive, deliberate plot twist (MKR) or a total decent into WTF? (Eva, Ghost in the Shell [manga])

The Epic Ending. This ending is typically only found in anime made after the manga has reached it's conclusion or had a sudden change in direction, usually ending on the last chapter ending. Also can happen with anime that follow certain formula. (Hellsing Ultimate, Mezzo Forte, arguably Bubblegum Crisis 2040)

The Non-Ending. This it typically a case of the anime being made before the manga or novels have concluded, or there is no real conclusion (Slayers, Tenchi Muyo: Ryo-ohki, Ranma 1/2)

The Downer Ending. Some stories just end this way. (X, Nadesico, Eva, Trigun, Angel Beats and Gunslinger Girls)

The Rushed, or 'THAT'S IT???' Ending. Almost always due to executive meddling, cuts, multiple writers, author existence failure, or the fact the manga is a Non-Ending or extremely long running series. (Bleach, Ah Megamisama, BASTARD!!!, Rosario + Vampire, Sekirei, Pandora Hearts)

I challenge Angel Beats being a downer! It had a really uplifting ending depending on your point of view.

Melancholy... but right at the end there... it wrapped up beautifully. I'd actually put it in the rushed ending category, feels like it's missing half the episodes.

And which ending you saw. The one where's he 's trapped in the school forever without his friends is a definite downer. The ending where he meets Tenchi again in the living world is not.

Waiting for my shill money from Spiral Arm Studios

I feel prehaps the reason many Anime's lack decent endings is because many end before their authors intended them to, due to being canceled or simply because the Author had no real idea how to end the story properly.

Animes in general seem to be the type of show thats really best when its kept going in perpetuity OR the story was completely written before the Anime came out.

This may have to do with many being based on Comics, which really don't end until the publisher shuts them down. The comic can continue endlessly because of an open-ended story. Which makes a good comic but can be wierd in a film medium.

I do like Mind Screw endings, if done well. Like Ghost in the Shell.

I only hated very few endings.
Notable is the Soul eater ending. I just hate the final lines.
the Rosario + vampire ending(We know who he will choose damnit)
And Madoka Magicka ending(mainly because it made me Bawl like a little man)

Yeah! Actually come to think of it my personal pet peeve is endings that do NOTHING to wrap up the romance sub plot. It makes me black out with rage. Especially if there's only been one romance the whole freaking arc, I kinda get in in the harem anime, you want to leave room for more, or avoid getting murdered by rabid shippers in your sleep.

I'll even take a Tenchi solution (marry them all) but SOME resolution.

Macross Frontier did that and made me want to bash my head against a wall, but they fixed it in one of the movies.

Site I watch my anime on has a new one, Legend of the Heroes: Trails in the Sky. A magic technology fantasy story that looks pretty sweet so far. They've currently got it listed as Episode 1, and only one listed, but it appears movie length. Unfortunately the audio cuts out after eight minutes so I've not watched it past that point yet...

End of Evangelion was just wretched, and the ending to that was even worse than ep26 in my opinion.

Still better than Soul Eater though. So much crap was thrown in there that it became ridiculous. I think I already bitched about the ending to that somewhere on this thread.

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.

At least with the original ending, whilst it was completely confusing, it was still a happy ending.

Here's the ending explained:

Spoiler:
Basically, the ending takes place entirely in the character's heads. The characters are all at psychological breaking point. Even the normally stoic and unflappable Rei feels completely useless, exhausted, spent and unnecessary. In the end, the characters finally overcome their issues, although it is shot from Shinji's point of view. For Shinji, he finally learned to like himself and overcome his fear of people. So in essence it's a very happy, upbeat ending. There is still a lot of abstract, subtle stuff (the fourth wall is heavily stretched, and it's possible that the audience themselves are tormenting the characters.

Also, they had to come up with something weird and abstract as the studio completely ran out of money. Like completely. Considering the miniscule budget it was made on, I thought it was impressive, if confusing.

End of Evangelion, while a great film, and providing a more solid ending, is so depressing and disturbing that I count it as non-canon. The screaming...

That and the whole film comes off as a mean spirited temper tantrum from Anno.

I don't get how the ending is meant to be solid.

Ok, so humans have the choice to come back to life. Ok, fine. But will they remember 3rd impact, like how people remembered the Apocalypse in Spawn? If not, will JSSF soldiers continue to butcher NERV personnel?
Are the angels dead for good? Can humanity go back to normal (sort of)
Does that mean Seele's plans have failed?
What will Seele do now?
Does Misato come back? I'm assuming the dead can come back, judging by how Asuka was butchered, and she seems to be fine now.
Will Gendo stop being such a dick?
What is going to happen to the other branches of NERV? What will be their reaction when they found out they helped cause the end of the world?
Where the hell did those grave markers come from?
It just raises too many questions! I don't mind a depressing ending, as long as it makes sense. Here it just...ends.

I also contest the notion that Trigun has a downer ending. I thought it was quite happy.

This is because, as much as I admire the man, Hideaki Anno is a massive, massive troll. I guess he read all the "OMG THE ENDING IS THE SUXXORZ!!!!" comments, and responded to the torrent of angry keyboard clattering with the most trollerific, disturbing ending he could. Basically "Still think the original ending is bad? *trollface*". I admire that.

It also doesn't help that the poor guy was suffering from absolutely crippling depression. Depressed guy+animation studio=ARGH.

Incidentally, Anno actually based Shinji off of himself. Talk about self deprecation. Still, I may he the only person in the universe that actually likes Shinji and thinks he's a really original protagonist. The other really interesting thing about Shinji is that he is actually a gender flip of the stereotypical futile moe female character who is afraid of everything. Look at Madoka Kaname and her personality and compare it to Shinji. See a similarity?

Oh, I know Anno was being a dick. Anyone can see that. Still doesn't excuse what happened in EoE. The term "Unprofessional" comes to mind.

I am well aware of Anno's depression, and the fact that he may have based Shinji off of himself. It whats makes the show so intriguing, in my opinion.
Interesting point about the gender flip. I had not considered that.

Having looked a little closer, I think that EoE was only partially made as retribution for the rather absurd amount of hate that the original ending got (although quite frankly I think that Anno was well within his rights to be pissed off, and whilst it is a horrific nigtmare and wuite possibly the most disturbing film of all time, and a little unprofessional, it was also a truly GLORIOUS jab). In an interview, Anno himself stated that End of Evangelion was actually the original ending they had in mind, before they ran out of money. You can even see some clips from End of Evangelion in the ending of the original series, such as Ritsuko and Misato meeting their fate. So I don't think it as purely (wonderously trollerific) vengence, although I think it did play a part.

It's still a good film though, and it does have some great moments, like Asuka delivering a righteous beatdown to the mass produced Evangelions in what I consider one of the coolest fight scenes EVER. It was hardy unwatchable trash, ala Freddy got Fingered. Saying that it as hard to watch, although for entirely different reasons.

As much as the film scarred me, I kind of respect it for just how horrific they managed to make it without just making it "Ultimate Intestinal Chainsaw Rape 3" and making it hideous in such a symbolic, psychological way.

[troll]But then I guess it's 2deep4u. [/troll]
