My mate got me into the Attack on Titan anime and I've really enjoyed it although usually I am not a big anime fan. Its really dark, grim and you feel quite sorry for the characters who have a horrible habit of dying. They even manage to make you feel sympathetic for the villain which I felt was well done in the episode where her identity is revealed. So much tension in that scene and its good that she isn't total villain and sometimes takes mercy on people.

Spoiler:
The only complaints I'd make are that I think they could have maybe had Annie interact with the other team members a little more. I wasn't really sure how Annie had such a close relationship with Armin that she couldn't bring herself to kill him when they only exchange a few lines when she says "You're weak. But you've got guts." But when shes revealed as the female titan she says "I am glad I could be a good person to you Armin". Even with Erin, aside from the boot camp scene she sort of fades into the background and thats such a shame because the female titan arc covers half of the series so you would expect more emphasis to be put on Annies relationship with Erin and Armin. As it stands, it feels like the show wanted her to fade into the background cast and I think given the depth of feelings expressed when its revealed and importance of that arc this was the wrong thing to do. Although the episode from her perspective was very well done and did slightly compensate for that. Also, I have some suspicions about Reiner and Bernalt who are always shown with Annie and being a tight group. If those two are who I think they are then the same criticism applies there. They haven't really interacted with our main trinity since boot camp despite having such a prominent role. I mean if you have time for bread girl, Jean and the rest of the recon characters arcs you probably should put more emphasis on the titan shifters.

Plus, this is probably a genre thing, but its a little bad how characters are introduced to us and we're given just enough to sympathize with them; before being brutally killed/eaten. I think maybe more background talkie episodes to establish these characters would be welcome and less dedicated to fighting (awesome as that is). The ratio seems to be 1 talkie episode to three fighting ones. Although the first major fight is clever because you really think Erin is dead, I don't know how they can keep repeating that as its obvious that main characters won't be dying.

Also the military types talking about the necessity of sacrifice and the greater good. I am okay when Mikasa or Armin say that "life is cruel". But I don't like how so much time is spent having generic characters hammer this into us propaganda style every episode. I'd rather it was solely tied to our characters story arcs.

Do you think in future episodes Annie might become a goodie? Or do you think she would have to die in order to redeem herself? She killed A LOT of people after all.

I tried AOT using that link, but I seriously cannot deal with 3 adverts per episode!
Especially scattered throughout, if it was all at the start, no problem, but just at the big moment of drama... an advert for Calpol for kids? Yeah - that's an "immersion breaker", right there.

Otherwise, seems ok, but as usual, I prefer the team 4 star version

Spoiler:
It isn't really. Underdeveloped characters can be kind of par of the course, but AoT has an abnormally high body count for a shonen anime. We're talking like 3+ standard deviations removed from the norm here. That said more talking probably wouldn't have helped. The show didn't have the quality writing or ability to stay on tone to carry what talking it did have. It felt like it was drowning every time it sat down and tried to be serious.

No I felt it was okay as went characterization. I just felt you needed more interaction so that I could get to know these characters and for them to hit the emotional beats they were going for. More Annie and Armin in particular because theres very little to suggest they were BFB beforehand but they end up rolling with that.

Spoiler:
A good example of them being nuanced is when Annie helps the group out by killing a titan and saving Connie. Immediately afterwards Reiner teases her that she put herself at risk. At first this seems to be sarcastic as from the boot camp he had always been saying she was a slacker. However, we later find out that he is the armored titan and she is the female titan. So this implies there is actually some tension between the three titan shifters. She was not supposed to break ranks and help the humans they are trying to herd into one place and kill. His previous teasing was mainly because Annie wasn't acting in character by earnestly practicing to become a trainee and being "lazy". Annie expresses this frustration and apathy towards "playing soldier" to Erin though to him and us the viewer this just seems to be a jaded personality. The fact its a correct assessment that our hero takes on board (the best fighters are sent far away from the front) distracts attention from how odd that remark is. Because at this point we don't know people can turn into titans its not as obvious somethings up but when they begin the female titan arc you do think back on these moments and they do back things up. So the show does this sort of stuff fine IMO.

Also, the core cast has remained the same. Erin, Mikasa, Armin and Levi are all still kicking. Even our three principal adversaries are still around as they didn't kill Annie in the final episode but crystallised her. So hope she joins the heroes in the end. But at any rate, its a bit like Game of Thrones where the bit characters and players die but the main ones remain alive for the most part. Plus the most time is still spent on those characters and those who do die are important in as much as they affect our main characters stories.

Plus I understand its based off a manga book series, so I suspect certain things were cut to keep down the number of episodes. I know that there are two scenes not in the Tv show. One where Annie apologises to a body and another where she finds some regurgitated bodies and is sickened by that. So I think thats part of the reason.

Who was it on here that posted about the new Gundam build fighters? I started watching it, and actually found myself enjoying it lol I think the show is pretty good as an anime, but it is way different from what a Gundam series should be about. Very cartoonish and childlike, something that I always dreaded about some of the series. That's alright though, like I said I still enjoy watching it and reminiscing about all the old models I see from the different series.
My one big beef with the series is that the main character's model is based off of the Strike and not the Freedom : (
Kira Yamato is my dreamboy/man

Yeah, at the end of the episode I remember saying "Well that sucks.".
Spoiler:
At least they could have made Madoka's actions make some sense. Not this "I am going to kill you. I am going to kill you. Your not the one I want to kill, Chifuyu is." Bullgak. It is just stupid. Should have just kept it like in the LN. Every time there is a terrorist attack, you are waiting eagerly to see if Madoka will attack Ichika. They really play off of her mysteriousness by shrouding her plots. Still trying to kill Ichika though.

I actually thought that his new gunpla for the world tournament was not going to be the star build strike, but rather a build based on the Freedom. I like the series (the op is pretty good). I don't mind it being cartoonish and childlike because you almost go into the series expecting it. It is a big deal with that expectation; unlike in AGE, where you were expecting a gundam series and got gundam for kids. I can't really answer your question well because, being a straight man, I have never had a crush on a male character. I can say that Kira Yamato is my favorite gundam pilot (besides Char because .... Char is iconic). I did have a crush on Lacus Clyne at one point, and that might explain my weakness for the pink hair (although silver is quite nice as well).

I watched the first thirdish of the latest vacation episode of IS and then realized I just didn't care about Ichika being put in awkward situation number 253 involving one of the girls who has a crush on him but won't just tell him. All they do is tell the same joke five times every episode, and then maybe give you five minutes of actual plot. The fights and the mechs aren't even all that good to make up for it.

Funny enough I too started watching Gundam this week. I finished episode 5 and I'm loving it so far.

I really like how I can relate myself with the "Modeler": I do my best to build and paint my models with all the care in the world, but I suck when it comes to playing

And the show is doing one heck of a job as an advertisement: It's getting me pumped to finally get a model from my favorite Gundam mech of all time, the humble Zaku II.

Yes, my favorite Mech is the "crappy" Soldier-mass produced mech. I only had a Gundam game for PS2, and you can bet I enjoyed kicking the crap outta Gundams with my faithful Zako

Ya I'd ahve to agree the Zeon has some pretty sweet suits. It's impossible for me to pick a favorite mobile suit from the series, but the Zaku is one of my favorites. I painted most of my crisis suits in their color scheme. GL on building the Zaku! I currently only own the Heavy Arms custom. I repainted it and use it as a proxy the new super crisis suit models they have.

Working my way through Attack on Titan, I'm going to try and avoid being all hipster and uptight here but does anyone else think the entire thing is bit of a metaphor of western-style consumerism?

Like , the titans just consume humans until they can't fit any more in, and then hawk them back up, then carry on eating, apparently ruining things for everyone else just because they can...

On the other hand, I've also started watching Omamori Himari, and all I can say is:

The new Gundam kits for the new show are all modular. They were designed with fully interchangeable parts to customize your own mech. I think some of the weapons/shields/backpacks are also backwards compatible with other Gundam kits. Bandai is really trying to branch out and appeal to the modelers.

I have a riptide that is calling out to be the freedom. I will only use him in apocalypse though (and he will always start in reserves); as the freedom deserves a grand stage to arrive in. Other than that I am planning to have my Farsight Enclaves army be comprised of mechs painted and converted to/from various mechs from various anime. That brings me back to those lovely new gundam kits coming out . It will happen.
