Can anyone recommend me something? I've seen Ganketsuou, and was looking at Stein's Gate, but fear with Time Travel it's just bleh.
I'd recommend Jin-Roh: The Wolf Brigade. It's only an animated movie, not a series, but it was certainly down-tuned and pretty artsy-fartsy.
Evangelion is a fairly standard suggestion for that kind of thing.
If manga is acceptable I'd recommend Berserk, maybe also Vinland Saga.
Let's see...
Katanagatari is a very good 12 episode series that does have plenty of action but also deep thinky things (Look I've gone through a really bad night of insomnia so I can't articulate my thoughts better than this right now)
Puella Magi Madoka Magica is a great show (Idk how much of a deconstruction it is of the magical girl genre though, not being familiar with the genre) similar in tone and presentation to Eva.
To name just a few that come to mind. Idk how much any of these shows would appeal to you but I would say they are less stupid fun than Kill la Kill or Gurren Lagann (Not that there's anything wrong with stupid fun, KlK is one of my favorite shows).
Invaders of the Rokujouma have repaired the damage they've done to my ship in good order, and upped the anty! Go protagonist go! Get the cute ghost girl! Full steam ahead!
Meanwhile I finally caught up to the current season on Fate/Kaleid Liner Prisma Illya, I haven't had this much fun with a magical girl series in a while. It's great top to bottom, and season 1 has received a well deserved 9/10 from me. Sadly 2nd seasons tend to fall down for me for some reason with a few exceptions, so we'll see how Illya and company do... hopefully going to be completely caught up by the end of the day.
Edit: Sadly not. Season 2 has let me down. I'm just not feeling the Kuro Illya plot. And the over sexualized 10 year olds thing is squicking me out.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long
There's a surprising amount of artsy serious anime out there, and more and more of it is getting translations. When you think about it though, even some popular stuff like say Ghost In The Shell, it's not like it's shying away from hard questions right? Hell GITS fething tackles whether or not there's such a thing as a SOUL.

Definitely a really good anime if your looking for thought provoking topics. Psycho Pass is another good one, also Cyber Punk futuristic. I know Cashern Sins has to be to, but I have no idea what it's about, even after watching it lol
The international film festival is on in New Zealand atm and I went to see Patama Inverted. Quite an interesting movie with perspective as quite an important theme.

I am certain everyone else gave good ideas. Watch them AFTER. Steins;Gate is a masterpice of an anime. Hell, its the reason I'm again back to anime. I watched the whole thing in 2 nights, I think, I couldn't stop.
And the "time-travel" is a good time travel. Well thought time travel. A rarity.
(hey cool, the airport in Frankfurt activated the Netherlands flag instead of Germany )

"Fear is freedom! Subjugation is liberation! Contradiction is truth! These are the truths of this world! Surrender to these truths, you pigs in human clothing!" - Satsuki Kiryuin, Kill la Kill
Totally forgot to recommend Gunbuster. If you can withstand the sheer force of 80's (Because it is a pretty damn old anime) I'd recommend it.
Also, I've thought about watching Legend of the Galactic Heroes, then I realized that it was over a hundred episodes and no one's life is long enough to sit down and muscle through all of it.
The Miyazaki movies on there are a good choice (Particularly Princess Mononoke, <3 Mononoke), but that should more or less go without saying at this point.
I'm currently watching through Ergo Proxy, and it's good, but Jesus everything is so dark and grimy I often can't tell what's going on (I'm not being figurative, it's so dark and grimy I literally can't tell what's happening onscreen sometimes).

Hey, that means are you are really close to me. Go borrow a car and hop over the border.
Also, yeah, Steins:Gate is superbly legit. One of the best anime I've ever seen, also made me come back, I finished it in 1 day, with the movie, when I had work the next day. Work with 1 hour of sleep, and so worth it.
Hmm, a buddy mentioned lending me this Steins Gate thing... sounds like I'll have to give it a watch.
List above brings back some memories, have only seen a few of those shows but I liked them. I'll recommend Ghost Hunt, it's short (too short) and kind of neat. Makes me wish Bleach had focused more on the horror aspect and hadn't gone 'over 9000' as quick as it did.
Already started Asura Crying, am enjoying it pretty well. Nothing has gotten too deep (Ep. 7) but it's definitely setting itself up to be due to the various passing comments made here and there.
Since I already started AC, I'll have to slot in Steins Gate after I get done with FLCL. Trying to mish mash a Serious > Fun > Serious > Fun type of pattern.
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
Be warned, if you're expecting Log Horizon to be anything like SAO, you'll be disappointed. It's much more of a 'standard' Anime plot- mysterious circumstances, one guy who happens to be a 'master strategist' who gathers together a rag-tag group of heroes sort of thing.
GENERATION 8: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

Haha sounds fun though xD anyone seen No Game No Life? Now that has one of the stupidest but still somehow cool plots I know xD

Wait, what?
Log Horizon is much more of a political thing then action focussed. I never saw it as a "standard" anime plot. :\

Ya there is very little action, and it's always raced over quickly. 90% of the show is the character's pushing up their glasses and plot build up through talking. Definitely not standard plot, and very detailed about the various aspects of living in a video game. Sword Art Online is the much more of a standard plot line. It's basically a super bland harem, you don't even get to know most of the characters very well
I'm getting good at the actual rhythm bit, and since the game is a combination "card" collector, team management, rhythm game the unlocks are fun, especially since earlier today I started really unlocking characters from the show, including my favorite character Maki.
I kinda wish the story the game is running you through was a bit more substantial, they did go to all the trouble of having the anime's voice actresses do the cut scenes after all... but I'm having way too much fun for a simple smart phone game.
You may now judge me.
I have NEVER felt like a bigger nerd/anime fan then I do right now.

One of my favorite songs from the show right there. Love Live! Really surprised me with how much I liked it. Now I want a smartphone to play this game....
