Summer season recap:
So I started watching a gak ton of anime this season, and these are the stand out winners in no particular order along with some surprises.
Aldnoah Zero - Tops for the season, but I'm not supremely enthused for the rest of it.
Hanayamata - Proof that cute girls with decent characterization can make me watch an anime about literally anything, this one's a favorite.
Gakkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun (Monthly Girl's Nozaki-kun) Top comedy of the season and a prestigious winner of a 9/10 score from me. I like Shoujo romance so I was going into this expecting exactly that, what I got was a glorious comedy with some truly charming wit and humor about itself around a great cast. Even if it didn't give me the full pay off I wanted romantically... I mean it teased it. But still.
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha (Invaders of the Rokujouma) - Another surprise this season that manages to make the supernautral harem feel much fresher then Bladedance, another piece of evidence that you can stick to form and still make it shine with substance.
Nobunaga Concerto - Holy crap, finally a Sengoku era piece with time travel that does it vaguely right. The animation style remains really rough for me, but I enjoyed it a lot otherwise.
Blade Dance of the Elementalers - Literally a recycling of one of the oldest harem variants known to man complete with all tropes you'd expect of it, Bladedance still managed to be surprisingly not suck. It wasn't a stunner, a little too cliche for that, but it was a lot ofun.
Sageabu - C3: Comedy edition, and in my personal opinion the superior of the two Girls und Airsoft anime.
Akame ga Kill - More. Give. Me. More. Gods DAMNIT.
Sailor Moon Crystal - I'll spare you all more fanboy squeling.

I beg of you sarge let me lead the charge when the battle lines are drawn
Lemme at least leave a good hoof beat they'll remember loud and long

Agreed 100% on the comedy and really recommend it to everyone, sad to have it end today. I loved the characters and their interactions - Kashima especially, also Seo was great but all of them were good value. This will be a favourite for a long time to come for me. I may have to track down the manga/novels now, missing the voices will hurt but knowing the voices lets you put them to the text which helps a lot I find.
Blade Dance of the Elementalers - Literally a recycling of one of the oldest harem variants known to man complete with all tropes you'd expect of it, Bladedance still managed to be surprisingly not suck. It wasn't a stunner, a little too cliche for that, but it was a lot ofun.

Yep pure tropes, very similar to Infinite Stratos but fantasy instead of sci-fi. I hate to admit enjoying it because yeah it is a lot of fun because/despite of the trope overload. If you look at it as a pisstake on tropes it makes it a bit easier ; p The main character being less dense helps I think.
Sailor Moon Crystal - I'll spare you all more fanboy squeling.

A fem friend is squeeing hard over this, says it stays true to the original, more-so because it's more true to the original manga than the first anime iirc. I tried ep 1 but it's really not my thing, I can see why fans of Sailor Moon would love it though.

Well I mean think about Sherlock. What really allows Sherlock to be engaging as a character is Watson. On his own, Sherlock would be annoying or cease to be as incredible as he is. Same with House. These characters function because of their supporting cast, the people they have around them who help us to see how great they are at what they do, as well as provide tension in a story that otherwise lacks tension because he its House. We all know he's going to solve the mystery because he's too good at it (except that one time he didn't).

Inaho is amazing, god of war like even, but his supporting cast is kind of as bland as he is. Not to mention that he's a teenager, and he's that calm and collected which is kind of creepy compared to a mid-life doctor and a professional detective with years of experience.

Not insulting Inaho he's cool. Just saying that there doesn't seem to be much to him, which would make his ability to kick ass boring after awhile.

Quite so. It was rather interesting to see the interaction between Sherlock and Watson, Sherlock pushing him away while still having the need for his company (no man's an island, entire itself). Wilson and Cuddy were similar for House, though House really made it hard with his nihilistic stance. Watson is my favourite character in the show, though it is certainly interesting to see keen-eyed Sherlock in his element. Especially when interacting with his older brother.

Anyway, I can't hear enough of Aldnoah Zero closing tune, piano makes it all the better:

Spoiler:

Yeah, as I said earlier in thread, the heroes get pretty boring and the villains completely overshadow them XD.

I gave up on the heroes a long time ago. Never before have I rooted and enjoyed the villains so much.

It helps that even Esdeath, and the absolute sadist that she is, is immensely sympathetic solely because if she gives a damn about anything in life other than sadism, it's the soldiers under her command.

And Wave, well Wave is just a badass (and an all around swell guy with 10x Tatsumi's personality).

Spoiler:
Yeah, I was very surprised when Esdeath's shows up after conquering North and she says to send the 10k gold to her soldiers. They should enjoy the gift. And then she says the "To fall in love" thing. Oh man, instant love for the character right there, I don't care if she's a demon in disguise.

Wave is awesome. I couldn't give a damn about Tatsumi and the whole rebellion when the "villains" have Wave and the others

Hey guys, is Gurren Lagann just the one season? If so then I'll start watching right away since that's on netflix atm.

Psycho pass is still very interesting 4-6 episodes in (lost track, could even be 8), kind of dark, really high tech, pretty neat.

Is Deadman Wonderland worthy of any recommendations? Also on netflix, reminds me of that Eureka 7 show in aesthetic just from the banner.

Yes. To prepare you for it;

This is Kamina. You will worship him as your god

I did not like the anime, primarily because they butchered the story of a series that had a rather bland story to start with. But yes, it was animated by the same team that did Eureka 7 and Xamd (Team Bones).

Wait, Xamd was Bones? I might have to check that out. I'm a HUGE Eureka7 fanboy.

I'm sure I'll like the show, undecided as to whether or not to finish psycho-pass first or to run them in tandem.

You will NOT speak bad of KLK's suits, either the star uniforms, the Kamuis or the fantastic NUUUUUUUUDISTOOOOOO BIIIIIIIIIICHIIIII (lack of) uniforms.

And you WILL love Kamina. Kamina is one of those characters you should hate. You don't. He's just that awesome.

I would say do Psych-pass first. You are about to hit on the main story for it and once that hooks you, you'll be through in no time.

I watched Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet and was downright impressed. It's a really short series so I'm at loss on how to mention anything about it without spoiling too much. The pacing was spot-on and it did a far better job of managing my emotional state as an audience than most shows do. It's not playing with any fresh material at all and some of the plot points probably sprout holes under scrutiny. It's also got these two episodes in the middle with too much awkward face service, some of it semi-justified.

However, the main thrust of it feels well enough executed I don't really mind the flaws.

I also tried to watch The World is Still Beautiful . I have this policy of only getting minimal outline of the basic premise and maybe half a first episode plot summary before trying something. It means I get to have really a really clean first impression but it also means I'm going in a little bit blind and boy did that policy work out here.

It's a shame because the first episode felt like the start of something really promising. Spunky princess with wind magic, heads to a strange kingdom for an arranged marriage. I can dig it. Two episodes later and utterly unlikable boy king can't keep his clothes on and our lead backtracks on her convictions so often nothing feels like it has any impact. What a waste.

Wait, what? Did you watch the same anime I did? That was one of the animes I most enjoyed watching weekly, their relationship keeps improving and improving and not only are the 2 main characters fun enough, the support cast is fantastic. Many laughs because of King's aid and advisors were had. (The 3 old men are fantastic xD).

Good gravy, Psycho-Pass doesn't pull too many punches (about half way through) and it gets downright grizzly at times. Everything is so clean/sterile most of the time when a badguy commits some hefty violence it really seems to hit harder.

Episode 16:
Spoiler:
HOLY gak! Kagari When Akane brained Makashima with the helmet, awesome. But seriously WTF cyborg/robo-chief? Mind==blown.

Gurren Lagann is looking good too, only a few eps in, dunno if I'll be worshiping Kamina any time soon, but I'm liking most of the characters so far. The sniper lady they ran into especially... she isn't crazy as balls, way too mean, way too nice, or anything really. At least not so far. Looking forward to watching more.
