Your work is amazing!

Okay, some updates coming. I had a break before and after 6E came out and now I'm back at it. Finished 30 cultists, 20 daemonettes, aegis defense line with quad gun, chaos Bastion. The pics didn't come out great but w/e... I was just in a rush to get everything pictured, maybe I'll go back to a few and do better pictures of them.

The True-Scale Iron Hands are on hold for the moment, as I am collecting enough men to do an actual army based around them... so I have two armies that fight each other 9natural enemies).

No dark vengeance chosen/hellbrute at the moment. I still haven't decided whether it's worth it to get them, but probably will little by little or as they get cheaper. The plan is to have a mostly mortal, daemon and machine chaos force, with very little power armor and just a few select true-scale power armor. So I'm working on amassing a horde of cultists at the moment, this is the first wave and the second will be forgeworld and pig iron cultists. Also I'm looking at getting some tanks for a guard ally situation.

Here are the cultists: Particular ones I'm proud of are the psycho with the knife, and the one with the heavy stubber firing with muzzle flash and ejecting cartridge, I had to completely resculpt his arms to get the position right. Glory to Chaos!

Here are the Daemonettes.

The cultists are just perfect, nice subtle conversions that make the models unique - I particularly like the added hoods and turbans and the heavy stubber pose modification. The glowing red eyes look great as usual, and I can see that working really well on the forgeworld renegade models.

Looking forward to seeing a group shot with the truscale guys surrounded by swarming hordes of cultists.

Thx dude, that's the plan.

working on the second wave of cultists as we speak... got the forgeworld package today, some pig iron legs and some heads... I'll pobably be satisfied once I have about 60 of them, but as long as I find new source of cultists we are good to go... except I can't bring myself to buy Catachans, the sculpts are just way too awful.

I got myself an M3 Lee model and waiting on the rivetting supplies, but it will be made up as a counts-as Valdor Defender heavy tank with a nest of cultists manning heavy bolters on the inside, and more hanging on to the sides. Like a moving fortress.

here's a little shot of my chaos bastion:

And another sneak peek... when he is done he will be AWESOME.

The tentaclewiretubes? A tube tool of course! number one question asked in this thread

Cthulu's body is mostly done, but I'm waiting on figuring out a way to do some lightning bolts with OSL coming from his right hand. His base will be water effect, and his feet will be underwater, there will be some ruins sticking out of it... as if he is emerging from the depths of the sea...

I originally was going to use him as fateweaver but after the FAQ he can't give 2+ rerollable saves to CSM's anymore.... therefore he will just be a flying Daemon prince or Lord of Change, depending on the list I use at the time.

The bastion looks great, I really like the style you have used for your chaos cultists - the graffiti and random crude spikes look perfect for a recent uprising that hasn't had the time yet to do all the elaborate engravings and nicely organised trophy racks that GW chaos often involves.

but as long as I find new source of cultists we are good to go... except I can't bring myself to buy Catachans, the sculpts are just way too awful.

I'm currently working with the same parts, interested to see the Pig Iron legs, couldn't tell from the pic if they were well proportioned. Catachans are awful although the command squad parts are of a much higher quality than the basic infantry. Cadians are also not ideal if you ask me (I unfortunately bought a load of them to build into renegades without having really inspected them properly... with their giant hands and feet). If you are using forgeworld renegade torsos and pig iron legs haven't you got a good formula already? I would also look at Victoria Miniature's convict or kilted legs, those could work pretty well. PDH has good results using Empire archer legs. I have seen some amazing renegades that used Elysian parts - Elysians are incredible models with dynamic poses but that's a really expensive way to go. If you want a whole new type of cultist then this thread has some amazing ideas, including one I might steal myself (old metal Catachans with marauder helmets).

Love Cthulu by the way. For lightning I am sure I have seen someone use the plastic lightning that comes with a Star Wars Emperor toy, something like this.

It is a good formula, i didn't use pig iron legs yet but I'll put up some pics. But the pig iron and FW stuff is costly when making a horde (I'd like 100+ in the end). That's why it's the second wave, these guys will get a bit more care. The first wave was more experimental. I prefer to work with cheaper stuff and blend it in with the good stuff, and GW cultists are mad cheap now... a little more than a buck each for complete cultists on ebay, and I can cut them up and get different parts out of them. I'll check out that stuff you said too, though. Also I'll probably make use of more wargames factory legs/torsos/heads just because they are cheap as well, and combine them with FW cultist arms.... GW cultist arms, gasmask heads, etc. Some catachan arms here and there might be good for the more mutated guys.

That's cool thread too shame that guy didn't post painted pics, not sure if the my pic does it justice but I mixed some mutations into my own cultist force, mostly it's like a hand turning into a claw or some spines growing out of a back, and dirty red bandages around it, so it looks like the mutation is relatively fresh or caused by proximity to warp energies. So I'm open into mixing a bit more of that into the force. I'm not a nurgle guy right now (i'd like to one day), slaanesh if anything but I like the army to have elements of each chaos god at work in it.

Here's another tidbit:

Got this guy done.

Working on more cultists too, I've got a bunch of stuff finished and ready to take pics.

Haven't really got the light tent rebuilt yet, maybe I'll just buy another off ebay. But I think these pics are good for now, it's visible that certain parts of his skin have different transparent layers of green and pink.

I'm happy with the way the lightning bolt turned out as well. And yes, that is seaweed hanging off him as he is rising from the lost city of R'lyeh...

“The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.”

— H. P. Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu (1928)

Thanks man! Yeah I had fun making this guy. He's just a Codex Daemons ally for now, but later on I think I could expand the force with more cthulu-based daemon creations.

Having looked at it again, man that paint work is awesome! What the hell did you do to it to get that iridescent effect?

I wouldn't say it's full on iridescent (more like an illusion of being iridescent), but it's mainly just complex from different layers of pink, gray-green, purple washes and a bit of blue as well... the way I work is quite random and expressive. A lot of different colors make the surface complex and interesting to look at.

It's also covered with a gloss layer, a bit more color, some water effects in places so it looks as if he's still wet from the ocean, (you can see some of the reflections from the light source). But I had to go over the gloss with a bit of satin varnish, because full gloss gives reflections that make the mini seem out of scale.

you have gathered here the darkest and weirdest looking conversions and sculpts i have yet seen... breathtaking...

seeing your obiterators was quite the thing... then seeing how you painted them... your OSL effects... brilliant... in every sense of the word... i think you should write a tutaorial for this...

the cthullu is looking awesome beyond ...well... beyond...^^ and consider yourself rightfully a riveteer by deeds the stuff you did on the oblits or the SM vets..... man... i want a slice of that skill!!!

will be a regular from now on

cheers, vik

@vik

glad you liked Cthulu! I'm honored to be a riveteer by deed! I make things dark and weird because that's how they should be, I didn't pick chaos, chaos picked me. In the future I try to branch out a bit more but it's hard with GW changing my codex and all. I'm pretty much selling off the force that I began this blog with little by little and replacing it with something new...

Well, as long as they go to a good home and nobody mistreats them I don't have a problem with it.

Nah not really. I'm a perfectionist so I like it as I improve to sell off the older stuff and make better newer stuff. I'm not a hoarder type at all. I like the process of building stuff more.

Oops, no I would like to put some tuts out there in the future, sure. I actually am planning to get the video rig set up to do some battle reports with my brother. The particular subject of OSL, there is better stuff out there than what I can produce IMO. NukeArts (formerly Nuclealosaur) did a great one and also Major Tom wrote an article, and that's where I learned about the technique from... just other people here on Dakka.

I would like to put out some tuts on scratchbuilding obliterators and Daemon Engines, once I get a few more under my belt, and I feel like there's a bit of demand for it. I certainly am open to suggestion.
