Subject: Re:www.anvilindustry.co.uk - New BLACK OPS Preview 26/02/13
Our first complete miniatures set designed from the start to be a set, - much easier to assemble than previous Steam Lord kits and still loads of options for customisation!
Sergeant and Scout
Grenadier and Sharp Shooter
Two Assault Specialists - one sneaking up on an unsuspecting Sentry.
Here is the Product page with loads more photographs of the parts and assembled miniatures-
Looking good! (But I knew it would. )
Will have to order some later when I have more monies.
Just need to wait for the smaller option based entries to go on sale so I can buy for my Kill Team now....
My my you have been busy, it's like Christmas all over again! These guys are making it into my next order for sure. Might have to wait for the autocannon and missile launcher to be released first though.
Loving the new backpack (will you be selling that separately?) arms and pads. Accessories are brilliant as well, I was going to model some double ammo clips but you beat me to it!

What gave you that idea? I can promise you, the proportions are exactly the same as your average space marine. You might see them in slightly more scrunched up poses but that is a result of the legs being in a more active position. I would snap a pic for you but I just sprayed all of them and now they don't photograph too well!

My previous Anvil orders have all had pretty much the same proportions as GW figures. I think it's all of the extra pouches and ammo clips and so forth glued on top that make them appear more squat than GWSM figures. My only critical feedback from what I've seen so far would be that the "grenades" strapped all over that grenadier model seem to be about the same size as GW missiles rather than 40mm analogues, but since they're seperate, it'll make it easy to convert one into a Missile trooper using a spare Missile Launcher arm.
I'll be ordering a set of these next week.
Joel - Please consider making a box magazine variation of the SAW. It'd go with these guys perfectly, as would a "modern machinegun" inspired SAW/M240/M60 that fit in with your current modern-looking weapons...
there very nice but the one piece bodies kind of put me off. now if you modified these to have soft armor for the arms and the thighs and back of calf i would have found a scout replacement for my wolves. hint hint!

Yes, but GWSM figures are too squat for me already :-/ so being "exactly the same as your average space marine" means wayyyy too squat to me!
But I will grant you guys (since you've seen them / their products in person) that they're not More squat... just similarly out of proportion.
I love my heroic scale, but with the exception of dwarfs, I want my minis signifcantly taller than they are wide...

Joel mentioned at some point in the past that he will probably be making "truescale" Steam Lords at some point in the future. They might be more your speed.
I don't know exactly how these Blops figures will turn out, as I don't have them in hand.
@Commander Cain - about two-three weeks for the new heavy weapons and Black Ops Suppression Fire Support team.
Most of the different option parts will be available separately next week, just need to find the time to make the sprues and moulds up.
@Asherian - Yep I think the heads will be a popular separate option hence why they get their own sprue!
@everyone discussing the scale of these figures - A "straight legged" miniature stands 33.5mm tall to the top of the helmet. the figures in the kit range around 31-33mm to top of head depending on pose.
In terms of the proportions compared to the GW plastic Marines - the height is the same, the body parts tend toward being less bulky, but the added pouches and equipment bulk these figures out a fair bit as has been noted.
Ive not had dedicated legal advice about taking and using photos of GW miniatures, so at this point im not willing to risk it, but im sure a customer will post up a comparison photo or two at some point.
@Azazel - Ill look at a box mag SAW - im thinking I might just make the new autocannon with two barrel options - long and stubby, to make two very different looking guns!
The grenades on the grendier are molded in place - as that rifle only fits on that model (due to the hand placement under the larger rifle/GL).
the grenades are actually exactly the right size to fit in the launcher - GW make their missiles far to small in my personal opinion! My missile launcher will have proper beefy missiles.
@LDD - Im not at all sorry. Enjoy the kit!
@BrotherKarr- Its always a trade off - fewer components mean I have more freedom to make interesting miniatures, and also MUCH easier to assemble the figures.
I did 10 different sculpts so that even with one peice bodies there is still loads of variety in the squad, even before the swap able guns and heads.
I will be making a "recon" version of this kit which you will like
I can take a picture of an unbuilt Bad Santa next to some mreens if people want.
(I know, it's shameful... but I acquired 3000pts of DalekCrons over christmas, and it got a little forgotten....)
Bad Santa doesnt even take that much to assembled.. just stick the gift under the foot and base him :p
He is made of Steam Lord components but not that accurate for scaling, I should post up a photo of the black ops next to some existing Steam Lords, Ill try and get that sorted out.
If you guys don't mind waiting until tonight, I can snap a pic of one of my Steam Lords next to a GW marine.
If only I weren't moving tomorrow. Then I'd go ahead and buy these figures now, but now of course money's going to be really tight. I guess I'll be waiting until I at least get my next paycheck.
And I noticed you've changed the name of the line to Exo-Lords on the site. Will we be seeing a trend towards more high-tech designs with the name change?
Well they should still be on sale in a few weeks/months! Hopefully with some more BLACK OPS squads - Id like to do recon, command, and veteran unit options, but not immediatly - Ive got a few other projects to work on first.
Yep Ive gone with the name change - from now on Ill be working on units based in my planned game setting, which is set around 2350 ish, so a slightly more high tech look to some of the newer stuff.
"Exo" instead of "Steam" conveys the background im angling toward better.
Really, really great stuff, if your forthcoming human 'regiments' range is anything as cool and contains as much little details as these i may well be poorer for it for a long time to come. Maybe poorer in the short term too as i might wanna pick up a Fireteam just to hold in my sweaty hand and drool over.

Okay, I said I'd post a size comparison between a Steam/Exo-Lord and a GW marine. It's a little late, but here you go.
Unfortunately, most of my stuff is in the process of being packed up, but thankfully I happened to have 1 Anvil figure and 1 GW figure, both still WIP hanging around. You'll notice that the Anvil figure is juuuust ever so slightly taller. I think this is more to do with the fact that the Anvil figure is standing straight up though while the GW figure is squatting slightly. Still, proportions are pretty much the same.
And, I apologize, the picture isn't the best, but it is 1:30am right now as I post this.
@Viking Child - Thanks very much! Glad you like them. And yes I certainly hope the Regiments range will be just as high quality if not better!
@Barzam - thanks a lot for posting that! Much appreciated. Yes I think GW legs actually come out a little longer than mine, but mine are generally more upright so the overall height is 1mm more or so.
@Jehan - Cheers! I have lots planned! to much to list here, Ill get it all done asap!
@Charax - See you there! We are really looking forward to it!
@Synthetik - Its based on the "triple plate" torso, but extensively modified. I may release them separately at some point.
Hey Joel, I recently purchased some glaives and shoulder pads to convert some of my minis. Just want to say the quality of the products were great and arrived fine despite coming from across the pond.
Someone might have asked about this before or something but I was just wondering if you were looking into doing longer staffed Chain Glaives? The ones you already make are great for normal space marines in terms of size scaling but I was wondering if there were plans to make any that were larger, longer sized ones to be used on units like Terminators or HQ characters in 40k possibly? The current ones look sort of small and comical if I were to try and use them on some Terminators for conversions.
