Oh fantastic. Another Adepticon exclusive only available to people on the other side of the planet made and produced by a company one state to the west that will never be available in this country. Not at Cancon, nor Arc 40k nor anywhere local at all. Piss and Vingegar.

Yeah. This and the broo quite frankly make me not want to buy any more of Vic's minis. Sure, they're great models, but they're premium priced (and in US dollars!) and there's no shortage of things I want to buy out there, so this kind of thing just drops Vic to the bottom of my pile.

Not entirely. If they're going to the first thousand registered, I'll be getting one.
To be honest, I don't understand the vitriol. Yes, you can't get event-exclusive stuff without going to the event. Awesome as it is, it's just a miniature, though... is that really such a big deal?

I'm guessing that you'll be getting one by being one of the people on the other side of the planet for that event? In which case, my point stands.
Honestly, it's annoying, and more than a wee bit insulting that these things aren't made available at all locally - even at events like CanCon and Arc40k.
Nope, it's not that big a deal in the scheme of things, but then, neither is something like this acting to make my prioritise buying other figures over more of Vic's minis. I "need" the Arcadian standard bearer as much as I need Arcadians. I "need" the Broo flamer guy as much as I need Broo troopers. Which is to say not at all.
It's not like I need any more figures of any kind, after all. But having the opportunity to get something cool or not begets buying more from the same line. Or not.

Some are worse than others, but every time a manufacturer creates a pointless hoop for potential paying customers to jump through, they put themselves one step further away from an enterprise we want to succeed. At one end, if you are working with the sort of resin moulds that degrade so quickly that you can only vouch for the quality of the first 200 casts, that's not unreasonable. But if you're producing a plastic kit for a new race ( DFG's Shadokesh) and refuse to sell it to people who back your future all-Shadokesh-all-the-time Kickstarter, that's just being a jerk. An Australian manufacturer refusing to sell their product inside Australia is closer to the latter than the former.

This isn't an Australian manufacturer refusing to sell her products inside Australia, though. It's an Australian manufacturer, with a range of products available to anyone who wants them, who was commissioned to supply an event-exclusive miniature to promote a specific event.
Events in Australia have every opportunity to do the exact same thing.

I thought the whole purpose of a swag bag promotional model was to draw people's attention to the company and get them talking. Mission accomplished?
Honestly, if the model didn't look so great I doubt it would be much of an issue.

It's an Australian company making a product that only those people who attend a specific event can get.
Where that event happens to be located is kind of irrelevant. If it was in Melbourne, it would be equally unobtainable for many Australians.
But that's kind of the point. It's a way of encouraging people to attend that event.

Wow, - Hopefully I won’t speak for Victoria here but:
AdeptiCon produces between 1500-2000 casts of each AdeptiCon model giveaway and we include the figure till we run out of swag bag material. In past years that has been in the area of 1500 bags. We say “1000” as that is the target number for other vendor material. We also set aside a number of them for sale at the show to anyone that wants to pick up extras. In fact, we generally have all previous years models available onsite for sale. As we produce this particular aspect of the swag bag we have more flexibility.
In the case of a company/sculptor who is actually attending AdeptiCon. Doing an AdeptiCon commission offsets the out of pocket costs associated with attending making attendance for smaller companies, especially in the case of an international one, more feasible. It also puts direct product in the hands of a target audience giving people firsthand experience with their work. Many of us know the amazing work that Victoria does but as crazy as it sounds a large number of hobbyists have yet to hear of it and a greater percentage have yet to see it. So putting a Victoria miniature in the hands of the audience of what is arguably the largest miniature war gaming convention in the world not only makes sense but ultimately leads to more sales, which in turn means more fantastic work from Victoria for the rest of us!
There is a whole list of other associated benifits for both a company/sculptor and AdeptiCon. ( teaching classes, networking, spending time with me, etc .. )
But in short, anyone that wants one of these models should in short order be able to make arrangements to get one.

I agree with the bulk of your post, muwhe, but your conclusion doesn't follow from the rest.
I don't object in principle to limited edition, collectable or otherwise special figures – and anything that benefits Victoria Miniatures and allows Vic more leverage to produce more of her great stuff gets the thumbs up from me.
I'm based in the UK and keen to get this lovely figure, so I've asked some US friends if they can pick one up for me. If I can't get hold of it, it's a shame, but it's not something I'll get my knickers in a twist about.

The female Arcadian Col. Sgt model is undoubtedly a gorgeous looking miniature, but as for all of us that won't be going to Adepticon, yeah OK sucks a bit that we won't be able to get her but don't forget all Vic's models are modular, I dare say when the full Arcadian range is released you might be able to recreate, if not in her entirety, but something pretty damn close with a modicum of converting effort, so for me no big deal.
If this is a preview of the standard set by Vic for the new Arcadians, both male and female, I can't wait!

Yeah, let's steer clear of blaming Vic in any way over this. Access to the one offs would be nice, but there are very specific and good reasons as to why that might not/cannot happen. In the end, she brings us entire miniature ranges and I think this offsets being deprived of one or two minis.

To be honest I don't have an issue with event only models it is a way of promoting a company and the event, hell it used to encourage me to go to the forge world open day (until they charged for it and the tickets sell out before I get one ).
Annoying yes I understand but big deal no not really, if it was possible maybe a copy of the miniature could be produced with an alternative standard top, this way you would have the same pose but without the Aepticon exclusive mini aspect.
I don't know if that is possible but it would work for me and hopefully most people, although if anyone is attending the event and does not want their miniature or can pick another one up please by all means PM as I would be interested in one

I know it isn't ideal, but I thought I'd mention that I've never had a problem getting an Adepticon limited figure off of eBay- and I don't think the amount I had to pay to get them was unreasonable (mostly because I can't remember what I had to pay out... if it was bad I'd recall it ).
Female Arcadian looks good, if the squads turn out like that you'll be making quite a few customers happy.

The Adepticon mini is great - so good job Vic! It actually got me interested in going to Adepticon (I hadn't ever even looked at their site before - never been to a wargame convention before) when I saw it, so the idea behind the limited ed figs is solid.
In the future though, it would help if they are announced while the con still has event/seminar seats left. I was ready to buy a ticket and look for a hotel, and then I saw that pretty much all the events/seminars are sold out. What's left isn't enough to keep my wife and I from being bored with nothing to do most of the four day weekend. Such is life I suppose.

I apologize for any frustration caused. I was commissioned by Adepticon to sculpt this. Doing so, makes if financially possible for me to be there. (otherwise I could not afford to travel from the other side of the world) The exclusive policy is their rules not mine.
This was recently posted on the Adepticon site by the organizer William Edley:
