@Gits- Hahah, exactly.

@Gian - Thanks!

@Brother of bone - I would strongly recommend it, only been using it a day and it's already made my life so much easier! I bought this one:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200600974912?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Which is a really good value (from what I know of these things) set for beginners, obviously if you have a bit more money to splash out a better compressor might be a good idea, especially if your going to use it alot!

Anyway guys I put some paint on my first scion, whilst I am happy with the scheme I am immensely annoyed once again by GW's purity seal, which has totally failed to give a matt finish. If anyone has a good reliable matt varnish they use which doesn't change paint tones too much please let me know, I'm sick of either this or the weird white foggy effect I seem to get with purity seal, even when used as recommended,

Until I get some new matt varnish here is a (slight shiny) couple of pics.

This may have been asked, but I can't find it. How do you do the mud stains at the bottoms of your greatcoats? I have a feeling adding that to my Valhallans will spruce them up nicely.

Model looks great, BTW.

If you can track it down, testors dullcote is a really matte varnish, but it tends to hate metallics and does weird things to them.
What I do is use Tamiya spray varnishes, I buy them from the local model car/train store, a coat of gloss followed by a coat of matte protects the paints from play, and seems to stop the metallics changing tone or finish too.

I'm sure others have different preferences though

That Dkok/scion looks the business mate, I'm surprised by the fit of the legs, I thought they'd be way to skinny but they look pretty good.
Great to see you grabbed an airbrush too, I look forward to seeing what you can do with it.

And there you go again! I'm not going to cry 'stop being so good!' i'm instead going to just smile sagely to myself, sit back a bit more in my chair and just enjoy the models you do! I have to say i am loving this new project and the model looks suitably fantastic, fitting in well with your previous works and representing the grim darkness of 40k perfectly!

@Elnibbus - Cheers man, although they aren't terrible as is!

@Chemical cutthroat - Lol! well spotted, i was waiting for a catachan style lasgun barrel but got too impatient so painted it without when it turns up i'll add it on

@Valhalla - No problem, im not sure it even has been asked tbh, originally I just drybrushed on earth colours but I found it a bit chalky, more recently i use a mix of three earthy weathering powders and just brush them on gently dry then brush off the excess, insanely simple, just need to varnish or something after to make it stay.

@ Sheep - Thanks for the advice Sheep, I think if it works good for you its more than good enough for the rest of us mere mortals! I will try and pick some up soon. As for the legs, they are odd, they do look fine, but they are still a teeny bit too small and from a few angels they look a bit off, its been bugging me since I finished that first guy.

@Gits / Sageheart - Too kind.

@Nerdfest - Hahahah you smooth talker Nerd, we all know this is a mild walk in the park compared to the size of the projects you take on!

So guys I have had an urge to do more vehicle stuff lately what with the blessing that is my airbrush, so I thought I would have a play around with an old tank, see if I could get anything to work, at first it was a bit hit and miss and I think I will need to strip this:

But it made excellent practice for my real project, my valkyrieeee! Now I don't really have enough WIP stuff, so here, lets go on a painting adventure together, it may end horribly, my airbrush still isn't used to me yet.

So first of all I had a play around with just getting some nice green highlights using the airbrush, I have to say this was amazingly fun and easy:

Then I went a bit crazy:

After spraying white, I took off my impromptu blue tack mask:

This afternoon I have started chipping it, next will be oil washes and generally dirtying it up!

Very nice. The camo looks nice and natural and breaks up the shapes well.

And damn, that's a lot of blu-tack

Lovely stuff, as usual J-paint. The camo is really well done; it's so simplistic but gives such a great effect. If you're having trouble with GW's purity seal, I can recommend Vallejo's varnishes. I'm pretty sure they're compatible with airbrushes and they have never had any problems for me. They also have satin and gloss varnishes. The other great thing about them is that they come in dropper bottles like the paints and don't have all the nasty chemicals; you can use them inside without the fear of frosting due to unmanageable weather.

Really nice work on the Valkyrie mate, you might like to try (on a small area first) chipping the green with some white, lot indicate that the white is primer and the green goes on top and chips off first.

The scheme is very second ed vahallans, which might be why I like it so much

It is fantastic! I used it to hold my parts down while priming, cover up painted parts when I am airbrushing. And when it no longer is sticky enough I throw it in my conversions for when parts are too hard to magnetize(as can be seen on my wyvern in my link)

It is fantastic.

@Paradigm, tell me about it, the woman in smiths gave me such an odd look when I was paying.

@ Gits - I think its fairly common with the historial gaming community, really is very neat.

@ Darth bob - Thanks man, I think i may look into vallejos ones, just for the airbrush ease.

@Giraffe - Pah, not mine, cant take credit at all.

@Sheep - Thanks Sheep, i actually tried to do the opposite of that, chipping green onto the white, but the problem is that the effect gets ruined because the green over white is so bright compared to the rest of the green, i fear i'd have the opposite problem if i did white over green, with the white not covering the green well in one coat. Glad you picked up on the classic valhallan theme, you might like the infantry below too.

@hk1x1 / Leth - BLue tack really is fantastic stuff!

@Rogue- I don't know about that, im pootering along at a snail's pace.

So not much of an update, just thought I would share with you a small amount of work I've done on the valkyrie, trying to add a few bits of grime and soot round the engine, still a while to go though, do you think it needs any transfers? this is probably the last point I could add them at, after this they would look odd without proper weathering.

Also had a quick test to see If the blu-tack technique would work on infantry.....the verdict: well, kinda! Opinions?

Now on to the important stuff! I have a plan to maybe make a armies on parade style board, not sure If I would actually enter it, but I think a clear end goal would be very beneficial for someone as flippant as me!

Now although I really like alot of armies on parade style things I often get the impression the army has been put on the board as an afterthought not planned for the board from the start, so I want to try and make a board based around the army, more a large Diorama than a proper armies on parade.

Now I have a classic piece of imperial guard artwork I want to recreate for this, it's the one with valhallans marching in formation going down a built up imperial street/parade ground, anyone know the one I'm talking about? I will try and find a picture soon.

Until I have anything to actually show you, I will leave it at that for now, as a teaser Suggestions/ inspiration are more than welcome. I may even make a dedicated thread for it, what do we think?

On the troopers, I'm envious. But I think after you paint thier bedrills and equipment a different color, it'll break up those camo spray lines and look fine.

I like the camo on the guardsmen a lot. I think it will really be tied together nicely when they're all weathered, highlighted, and shaded.

Blu Tack works on the men dude! nicely done and should speed you up no end, I also think I'll vote yes on some transfers, just something to break it up a little. Everything else looks good on it, the engines re coming along looking weathered like a boss!

The new models looks great. Looks like you've taken to the airbrush with aplomb. The camo looks great on both the vehicles and the figures, I think a few transfers could be good on the valkyrie.
