We've something exciting to tell you... But first, a huge thank you to all of you who attended the Black Library Weekender. You guys were a joy to spend time with and made it the fantastic weekend it was.
For all of you that weren’t there, the event finished with a very special announcement: November 2013 will see the release of a Horus Heresy graphic novel.
Written by Dan Abnett and illustrated by Neil Roberts, Macragge’s Honour will weigh in at a hefty one hundred pages. The full-colour graphic novel explores the epic naval battle that starts in Know No Fear when Kor Phaeron escapes in the Infidius Imperator and Chapter Master Marius Gage gives chase.
After the announcement, editor Christian Dunn held a short Q&A session. One of the questions was: ‘Will you go back and re-tell the Horus Heresy in this format?’
Christian said ‘no’ and went on to explain that while Macragge’s Honour would just be the first in a range of new Horus Heresy graphic novels, they would be focusing on telling new stories. Though he did drop some hints about revisiting key battles (specifically Prospero) and exploring different view-points on certain events. The names Gav Thorpe and Karl Richardson may also have been mentioned...
Initially, Macragge’s Honour will be released in a limited hardback edition, designed to match your other collector’s edition Horus Heresy books and limited edition novellas. As usual, this will be followed by a general release.
In other news, there’s a brand new audio drama featuring the Flesh Tearers and Angel Encarmine available to download now. Written by Andy Smillie and C Z Dunn, The Stromark Massacre follows the tension between these two Blood Angel successor Chapters as they bring a rogue system to heel. It also goes a long way towards explaining why they’re known as angels of death! The download also includes a set of wallpapers and maps.
Join us on tomorrow’s blog for a full review of the Black Library Weekender.

The poor man really has a stake in the country. The rich man hasn't; he can go away to New Guinea in a yacht. The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all
We love our superheroes because they refuse to give up on us. We can analyze them out of existence, kill them, ban them, mock them, and still they return, patiently reminding us of who we are and what we wish we could be.

Here some info from a reliable source:
Confirmed novels, novellas and audios, with release dates where announced:
BETRAYER - Aaron Dembski-Bowden - Jan 2013
Angron and Lorgar smash up Ultramar. Not a sequel to Calth, so much as a parallel storyline. "Big unknown event" takes place during this novel.
MARK OF CALTH - ed. Laurie Goulding - Apr 2013
Anthology featuring stories from the Ultramar side of the war, for years after Calth. Confirmed are:
1) 'Calth That Was' (Graham McNeill) novella which links Remus Ventanus to the 40k Ultramarines continuity, along with Maloq Kartho before he becomes a daemon prince.
2) 'The Shards of Erebus' (Guy Haley) showing how Erebus learned to do his warp-travel thing, and where he got his athame dagger.
3) 'Unmarked' (Dan Abnett) following Oll Persson as he leaves Calth.
4) 'The Underworld War' (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) showing the expansion of the Gal Vorbak, and how they realise they've been left for dead by their Legion.
5) 'Athame' (John French) which is apparently a very "odd" story, following a particular knife. All we said was that it's not Erebus's knife.
Also confirmed are Rob Sanders, Anthony Reynolds and David Annandale.
HONOUR TO THE DEAD - Gav Thorpe - Apr 2013
Audio drama set during the invasion of Calth. Two Titan legions fight for control of a city, wiping out whole regiments of Army troopers and civilians almost by accident. Contains continuity links to "other new 40k projects".
KNOW NO FEAR - hardback collector's edition - Apr 2013
CENSURE - Nick Kyme - ???
Audio drama featuring Aeonid Thiel, set after the battle for Calth.
VISIONS OF HERESY - Alan Merrett etc - "mid-2013"
This is not so much a reissue of Collected Visions as a complete reworking. Loads of new artwork, all corrected background material and loads of new text from Alan himself. All of the Neil Roberts covers will be included, as well as new concept art and close-ups. This also covers almost all of the Horus Heresy novels so far, as opposed to just the old edition canon.
The format will be A5 hardback to match the HH series. It will be released simultaneously alongside a limited edition, which matches the larger Forgeworld books exactly.
VULKAN LIVES - Nick Kyme - ???
The clue is in the title! Although left for dead, Vulkan has survived Isstvan V, and this story explains where he has been and why he hasn't been found earlier.
UNREMEMBERED EMPIRE - Dan Abnett - ???
This is the "Imperium Secundus" that has been hinted at so far. Ultramar is fortified as a second Imperium, because Guilliman honestly believes that the Emperor is dead. Sanguinius is to be crowned as the new Emperor, which doesn't sit well with all present. There will be a "massive superhero style battle" which Dan never expected to see in the Heresy.
This is the first book in a wider arc, as part of the Age of Darkness.
MACRAGGE'S HONOUR - Dan Abnett/Neil Roberts - Nov 2013
Full colour, 100-page graphic novel, hardback to match the rest of the HH series perfectly. This will NOT be available in partwork, nor split into comics, and is being produced SOLELY by Black Library. It follows the naval duel mentioned in 'Know No Fear', between Marius Gage and Kor Phaeron.
This will be available in time-limited edition with extra content, as well as non-limited edition later.
VENGEFUL SPIRIT - Graham McNeill - ???
Novel.
WOLF HUNT - Graham McNeill - ???
Audio drama which explains the rather abrupt ending of 'The Outcast Dead', and the supposed timeline "error" which everyone thought they had spotted. Severian is hunted down by Nagasena in the Petitioner's City, as he tries to follow the original plan to escape Terra.
THE SIGILLITE - Chris Wraight - ???
Audio drama which hints at who Malcador actually is, and what his role is supposed to be in the Emperor's grand plans. Also laying the foundations for the Webway War.
CYBERNETICA - Rob Sanders - ???
Limited edition novella, which shows what is currently happening on Mars. Techno-heretics are released from imprisonment by loyalist forces fighting a rebellion war on the surface against Kelbor Hal.
UNNAMED CORAX NOVELLA - Gav Thorpe - ???
Literally, what Corax did after 'Deliverance Lost', attacking a forge world which had begun producing daemon engines. Also described is a "battle" between two floating cities which "broadside" each other for weeks while assault troops jump back and forth between them.
UNNAMED WHITE SCARS NOVEL - Chris Wraight - ???
Following on from 'Brotherhood of the Storm', Jaghatai Khan makes up his own mind what to do in the Horus Heresy after Chondax - it's not the answer everyone is expecting. Also links to 'Garro: Sword of Truth' and explains why there were traitor White Scars near Terra.
Two more anthologies have been announced, titled 'SHATTERED LEGIONS' and 'THE SILENT WAR'. Laurie Goulding is announced as editing both of them.
Also, it was announced there at Christmas there will be THREE Horus Heresy mini audio dramas released through the website. These will not be available physically available on CD for the foreseeable future.

http://www.sfx.co.uk/2012/11/05/dan-abnett-and-neil-roberts-talk-horus-heresy-graphic-novel/
Yesterday at the Black Library Weekender, fans received incredible Warhammer 40,000 news – Black Library has plans for a Horus Heresy graphic novel written by New York Times Bestseller Dan Abnett with art by celebrated cover artist Neil Roberts.
The Horus Heresy is the backstory to the Warhammer 40,000 sci-fi universe and this will be its first time in graphic novel form. The 100-page limited edition hardcover, entitled Macragge’s Honour, will be released late next year, with the team hoping to show some of it off at San Diego Comic-Con 2013. The story is set during the battle of Calth (following “a ‘Hunt For Red October’-type duel… that’s been in the rulebooks for 20 years” according to Abnett) and the creative team revealed the first five pages of it in Nottingham on Sunday in front of over 300 people at the packed Black Library Weekender. “It will be like holding a 500 million dollar movie in your hand,” enthused Roberts, to rapturous applause from the crowd. We were able to grab time with the creators to discuss their ambitions.
“We’ve been asked repeatedly about comics. I think the appetite for a graphic novel is huge,” Abnett told us. “We did Warhammer Monthly before, when Black Library first started; it’s the reason I write for these guys in the first place. I’m known for the novels now – they really took off – but comics was where it started. And today we have the Horus Heresy. Within WH40K it’s its own brand, a multi-million selling sub-division. So it’s come together really smartly: I’ve written comics for 25 years and I’m known as a Horus Heresy writer; Neil Roberts is the artist and he’s superb; the Horus Heresy is massive; and that’s really why we went for it!”
Artist Neil Roberts is best known for his covers, not only on 25 bestselling Black Library books but also on 2000 AD for strips like Judge Dredd. “I’d mentioned years ago that it would be a good idea,” he tells us, explaining why the time is right for a Horus Heresy graphic novel. “People often ask about it. After a while it kept coming up. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time so this is my chance to go hell for leather. What we’re doing is going to look radically different from a regular comic, it will be distinct and standalone.”
he guys have been working in secret on the project, collaborating “Marvel-style”. Abnett again: “Marvel comics work where you write a plot, an overview of what has to happen on a page, then the artist draws it, then you supply a full script later when you’ve seen that. You don’t deliver a full script right at the start. I describe it in terms of what happens and some loose dialogue ideas, then when he’s drawn it I fill in the precise speech. Stan Lee did it that way, and it’s a great way of giving the artist a lot of storytelling control and also a great way to keep things moving.”
Roberts agrees: “Dan is coming up with the plot, I’m drawing it, then he’s putting the words to it – it frees me up to draw the cool stuff without worrying too much about the nitty-gritty. I can get on with doing the action- packed focus of it.”
This will be a brand new story set in the Horus Heresy continuum, not a retelling of an existing storyline, and in terms of plot, Abnett has known from the start where it will fit into canon. “In Know No Fear, my last Horus Heresy book, I was deliberately seeding stories,” reveals Abnett. “We always have an obligation to think of handovers for future books. I added a clear moment in that one thinking that would make a great story and when Christian Dunn [Black Library editor] suggested it could be a graphic novel I thought, ‘Yeah! It’s so visual!’”
“The idea is to make it look like a film in comic form,” concludes Roberts. “If Peter Jackson and James Cameron got together to make a Warhammer 40,000 or Horus Heresy film, this would be how it would look!”
See art from it and read other news at the Black Library website. Look out for a report from the weekend’s event in SFX 230.

more news, including the changes to Hammer and Bolter...
The Black Library announced at their weekend event that they are producing a Horus Heresy Graphic Novel. The 100 page book has been written by Dan Abnett and will be illustrated by Neil Roberts. Abnett has said that he is “incredibly impressed” by the artwork completed so far, and that seems to have been a very British understatement. Roberts has promised that it will be like “holding a 500 Million Dollar Hollywood movie in your hands.”
Called Macragge's Honour, The story takes place during the Battle of Calth and will feature demon-tainted villain Kor Phaeron being chased by Ultramarine forces. Like all new Heresy novels, it will be available in hardback form through Games Workshop retail outlets, before a paperback mass-market release three months later.
This will be the first in a series of books. Planned future releases include a Space Wolves/Thousand Sons story, told from the Space Wolves’ perspective. This will be written by Gav Thorpe and illustrated by Karl Richardson.
Other details from the event include the sad news that the regular open submissions window will be changed. The Black Library will ask for themed submissions, to fit specific anthologies and collections. Popular short-story e-magazine Hammer and Bolter will also close and be replaced by a regular short story release slot, every Monday.
More Time of Legends, Warhammer and Warhammer 40,000 books are coming soon. Highlights include works called Baneblade and Skarsnik both by Guy Haley. More books from the Tau perspective will be available in 2013 as well and C.L. Werner will continue to produce thrilling books about the Black Plague.
More Horus Heresy novels are planned; the next one will be Betrayer by Aaron Dembski-Bowden, swiftly followed by an anthology called The Mark of Calth, which includes contributions from Dan Abnett, Graham McNeil, John French and Aaron Dembski-Bowden and will follow on from the novel Know No Fear. Upcoming anthology, Shattered Legions, will be about the survivors of Istvaan V whilst another anthology, The Silent War, will talk about the dirty trick both sides pull during the conflict.
The next full novel will feature the Ultramarines heavily, and is called Unremembered Empire, also by Dan Abnett. Nick Kyme will then produce the next book, called Vulkan Lives, and will feature the Salamanders. Novellas are also planned, including more Salamander action in Scorched Earth and Imperial Army action in Tallarn, which are also about ten million tanks. The adventures of the Raven Guard will continue in Gav Thorpe’s Corax and Rob Sanders will be writing a tale of resistance on Mars currently called Cybernetica.
Scripts for both the Space Marine Battles and Horus Heresy audio plays will also be coming soon. Regular plays covering the Space Marines are also planned and fans will be able to download new stories regularly and often.
Multiple audios are planned, including Wolf Hunt, which follows on from Outcast Dead, further plays featuring the space-knight errant Garro. Another play, called The Sigilite will involve the settings’ own space-Gandalf, Malcador, and is likely to tie into both the Garro plays and The Silent War anthology. Other planned audios include Gav Thorpe’s Honour the Dead (featuring giant robots hitting each other), Graham McNeil’s Thief of Revelations (featuring Magnus The Red and a terrible decision) and Nick Kyme’s Censure, which will star Aeonid Thiel, the heroic rogue from Know No Fear.
Finally, an audio book featuring Dan Abnett reading out one of his stories in his distinctive and flavourful manner is currently in the planning stages.

Not sure if already mentioned:
Gav Thorpe on facebook wrote:Synopsis for an Eldar audio delivered to BL. Time to do a bit of prep for tomorrow's HH meeting.
(...)
Now it's time to start on Howl of the Banshee, a new Eldar audio.
but why only audio?!
Why not audio? I think, for reasons mentioned by others, the audio format will be perfect for a Howling Banshees story, and I really enjoy writing for audios. I'm sure the prose version will be available some time later.
Gav Thorpe via Email wrote:Hi, thanks for getting in touch Dale.
I did toy around with the idea of having a main character as a male Banshee for Path of the Warrior, but not this time around - it will be an all-female cast. It's a one-off story not related to the Path series, with the characters hailing from Biel-tan rather than Alaitoc.
Cheers,
Gav

I think it's very intriguing! The fact that it is written by Abnett gives me much more hope than otherwise though, he has a history of re-inventing stuff in the background (both with Legion, and Prospero Burns).
A couple of possibilities
- Misdirection/misinformation by the Alpha Legion, to try and cut the Ultramarines out of the fight completely after some of them survived the Word Bearer's treachery?
- Some kind of weird alternative universe?
- The HH story series is going to actually change from what we know - i.e. the classic overview that has existed for 20+ years (Horus kills sanguinius, emp kills horus yada yada)
- someone is taking the piss

- The HH story series is going to actually change from what we know - i.e. the classic overview that has existed for 20+ years (Horus kills sanguinius, emp kills horus yada yada)
- someone is taking the piss
It's not a huge change, but rather elaborating upon a general gap in the timeline. We dont know what Guilliman is up to or what they did after Calth.
I liked the idea that Guilliman was planning to succeed the Emperor after the Heresy, but am not a fan on the sound of this, but we'll see...

To clarify incase you thought otherwise: Horus has been stabbed by the Anathame (which IIRC he gave to Fulgrim?), but there have been several athames (ritual weapons AFAIK), mostly wielded by Word Bearers.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

If that happens, it would be a change.
The "Roboute stabbed by Fulgrim" incident is well into the Scourging 'now', isn't it?
I believe so; that duel happened well after the Heresy.

The synopsis only points to Sanguinius being crowned as new Emperor, although it does allude to Guilliman's "support" of this with the information that states he believes that the Emperor is already dead at the time. Not sure I like this either, but considering in all likely possibility that after Lorgar and Angron's romp through Ultramar, the Ultras may be cut-off via astropathic link to Terra, so they may be working with what little information they have and are assuming the worst case scenario. Of course, having the Ultras spend their resources defending the homefront effectively keeps them bottled up without any chance of supporting Terra's defense, so this greatly fills in the details somewhat for their absence in the final showdown.
Will be interesting to see what Abnett has in store in this one....

According to the IA article Ultrmarines
Guilliman did not receive word of the betrayal until the battle for Terra was under way. Gathering his Legion, Guilliman led his forces towards Terra, en route destroying a rebel fleet on its way to reinforce Horus. The war had been won by the time Guilliman's warriors reached Terra, but the Imperium was in turmoil.
and Word Bearers
While Kor Phaeron set his men upon Calth, Lorgar was leading the rest of the Legion against Terra.
So we know that this has changed. To me this original telling made more sense though rather than Guilliman building up an Empire on his own and then going to Terra to help. It raises the question again Dave that we posed in the thread where we asked, is Lion the real fence sitter? It's not clear now if he does go to Terra, Sanguinius must still go to Terra, they can't change the story that much surely, but then why would Guilliman not want to help.

Correct, one Anathame many Athames.

Might have been after the Scouring depending on how long that lasted.
Roboute Guilliman continued to lead the Ultramarines for the next hundred years until he and his warriors fought against the traitor Primarch, Fulgrim, and the Emperor's Children on the world of Thessala.

And this is the part that bothers me.
From the old fluff we know that the Ultramarines, Dark Angels and Space Wolves eventually show up at Terra after the battle is over. Maybe there is a part for the Lion to play here as far as keeping things together IF the Ultras had this "backup" plan of a Secondary Empire which appears to unsettle some loyalists. But it still presses the issue of why the Ultras would even show up at all, unless it is to come to Terra to "pitch" their plan to the defenders there or they have a change of heart and just abolish the plan altogether.
Or, is it possible this is just talk within Ultramar but is never acted on?
This one is intriguing enough to warrant mass speculation....but using the old fluff as our baseline we all know that some things are going to change. I just can't see certain "core" parts of this era changing at all as it's so central to the story.

Lion turns up with Russ, right at the end and mop up, Guilliman doesn't appear until much later I guess. There isn't any mention of him actually partaking in an fighting if I recall, other than around Ultramar.
Maybe Guilliman showed up late so everyone else was weakened at this point, he's got the biggest Legion by far now and enough muscle to force the Codex onto everyone.

I hope that when this is all done and dusted there is a comprehensive: 1. Re-release of all HH materials (audio collections, omnibuses, etc.) 2. List of what order they come in.

I doubt it, especially if you divide it into sections. You can even say things like "Chapters X through Y take place before this event, and Chapters Z onwards take place after it".

Finished Brotherhood of the Storm just now and I'm rather.. disappointed with it, unless I'm missing something here. Nice addition to the shelf, but the story itself was rather bog standard really.
