No one can doubt that the honor of the IF at Terra. What is doubtful is whether it was the best course of action ... hence Unremembered Empire (is my guess at least).

Finished Betrayer yesterday.

Certainly answers some questions about why the UM were stuck in the Eastern Fringe until after the heresy. Also an interesting take on a few characters, and quite a few unexpected moments.

However, the idea of why the Ultramarines can't or won't make it to Terra doesn't explain at all how unremembered empire fits in, from what we know now. Unless the Emperor and friends pop out of the webway, say 'Terra, this way, idiots' and then the UM miss the bus to the webway station.

Note - I've tried for a lack of spoilers - feel free to let me know if i've failed hard.

So, new audio downloads are now out. - Betrayer and Flight of the Eisenstein.

Strangely, even Flight of the Eisenstein comes in at £22. Is that the new audio book price point in general, or is it just random money grubbing cause the hardback of Eisenstein is happening to come out, despite it being in paper?

Anyone hear anything about it coming out on hard copy, or even if it'll one day drop down to the old £20?

Finished Ahriman: Exile this morning, was a fairly quick read at 250ish pages of actual story.

I'm not sure how I feel about it, to be honest.

He's a farcry from his portrayal in Atlas Inferno, where he absolutely oozed menace and near godlike power. I guess this is part one of an "Origins" type series that will go into detail of how he went from a penetant self imposed exile to how we know him today. A few (at least one, been awhile since I read Thousand Sons) cameos of characters from HH: Thousand Sons. As a stand alone book it didn't really resolve anything, (other than how Ahriman got a prominent piece of wargear) so I'm hoping it is indeed part of a series.

The supporting cast was colorful, although not knowing the Chapter origins of Ahrimans traitor henchmen was kind of annoying. Was hoping they'd at least drop a small piece of trivia so that fans could conclude on their own, again something to be resolved later in the series, I hope.

Next up is Ravenwing!

Anyone have any experience with the Fantasy side?

I've been interested in the Nagash series for a while, but I was never thrilled with the Fantasy offerings when Black Library started up. Is the Nagash series worth getting?

i really like the Nagash series...
the first one is a great look at Khemri before everyone goes undead...
the second is my favorite, with the birth of the Vampire court...
the third is Nagash building his new empire in the New World...

good, hefty, books, with a lot of story to tell...
i enjoyed the series more than the Sigmar series, which was well written but fairly well-explored territory...
i even enjoyed it more than the Sundering series, which had a lot of information i was interested in learning, but Gav is probably my least favorite of the current BL authors...
Mike Lee is at his best so far in the Nagash books...

Good stuff. Now to decide if I want to give ebooks a spin or just grab the big, chunky omnibus.

the omnibus will be the cheaper option here, netting you a free book basically...
i buy ebooks when they are cheaper than the dead tree version, and vice versa...
the savings is only a dollar with ebooks, and two with the digital WD, but it always feels good to get a discount...
plus, i have to wait for people to come from the states if i want a physical book, so the iPad has been great...

unfortunately, even the BL Christmas ebundle for Nagash is five dollars more than the omnibus...
saving a dollar on three books is not much reason to buy from the BL site direct, instead of using an iTunes card for the iBooks store...

Yeah... I know... except I just picked up one and three on a whim at the local book store and I am tearing through one something fierce. If I had known two was going to be so expensive, I would have passed. I seriously was not expecting it to be that much. As for ebooks... I do not have an e reader and I do a lot of my reading while on the commute to and from work.

I am still wondering why the sellers are jacking it up so high price wise. I can accept it's out of print but sevral hundred dollars in some instances?!?, madness.

I just bought all three last month at Barnes and noble off the shelf. They keep offering me the discount club, probably should have would at least have broken even.

Now my gripe is the hardcovers. There have been so many hh books lately that just haven't hit me right and now the big delay waiting for the paperback version is driving me away. If I get my dreamforge games stuff before the next paperback comes out I think I'll be done with all GW stuff. I've given up on the minis to better companies, now the writting might be next because of silly money grabs.

since there has been a move to hardback and bigger paperback I have actually stopped buying, The trouble is, by the time they come into paperback my interest will have waned. Heck, I didn't even sneak a few pages in when I saw them in B&N.

The same thing happened with Gaunt books. I never bought another after they went into hardback.

I really think this is a tactically error by BL.

2014 will be the year of zero GW purchases. Kneadite instead of GS, no paints or models. 2014 will be the year I finally make the move to military models and away from miniature games.

I'm pretty much in the same boat here, I did fold and get the last Gaunts Ghost book in hardback and I picked up Pariah but I am not paying $40 for hardback HH books, particularly when I have a huge collection of them in paperback and the quality of them goes up and down. The problem is my intrest has been waning since whatever one was after Know No Fear so by the time they do come out in paperback I might have stopped caring entirely.
The move to hardback really feels like GW pushing its 'we need to make as much money as we can in the short term' practices on to BL.

It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Yes, GW has really been hurting BL lately with its shennanigans. There really hasn't been a HH book worth buying since Fear to Tread. And I say that not judging if it's a good book or not (I've heard mixed things), but simply because it addresses a relevant event in the Heresy and isn't some LIMITED EDITION HARDBACK NOVELLA ANTHOLOGY nonsense.

The key problem is GW is expressing its "this hobby is about collecting" doctrine (as expressed by Jervis himself in WD) to the book front, and is concerned primarily with having people "collect" the books rather then reading or enjoying them. It will help short-term, but not long-term, much like the hole they're gradually driving their tabletop products into.

I'm not even that convinced it's going to help them short term. The HH books were already a big short term success, as the NYT best sellers demonstrated. The reaction to this nonsense has been enormously negative. They might get by with similar profits based on selling fewer books for higher margins, but will it really have been worth it if half of the fan base now hates them? I may or may not buy the regular priced ebooks when they finally release them, but my goodwill has been replaced by spite and that has consequences.

Hardbacks first is what most publishing companies do. I swear to god sometimes I wonder about people. If you want to read the new George R. Martin book do you people complain it's in hardback first. You know paperbacks normally follow 1-year after the initial release right? I might not agree with all of GW's decisions but having their book publishing company acting like a book publishing company isn't GW being evil!

Not counting the fact that you can still get the ebook's for the same cost as most new hardback ebooks (ex. Cold Days, Jim Butcher, was $14.99 or $15.99. Angel Exterminatus was $15.99)

Oh, and Angel Exterminatus was good and advanced the story line. Much, much better than Fear to Tread....

I'll give you that hardbacks are the norm for more mainstream books but as Harriticus said, it's more a problem with the LIMITED EDITION HARDBACK NOVELLA ANTHOLOGY crap.

Not from most of the complaining I've seen. It's the transition to hardbacks and how that sets back the paperbacks which has been the ire of most of the posters.

And Harriticus is wrong. There have been two novels that came out in hardback, that aren't "anthologies", that advance the story line. He just doesn't want to have to buy a hardback or wait for the eventual paperback.

I think the issue here is that readers feel that something is being taken away from them, namely, that they will have to wait longer for the paperbacks they were already buying to make room for more expensive hardcover releases on the schedule. BL said that's not the case: you can still get a paperback at the usual time that a paperback would be available but you can now get a hardcover copy earlier. Since I don't know anything about publishing, I'm left wondering if that's bull gak. Does BL publishing hardcovers actually get these stories to me more quickly if I'm willing to pay more? Or is BL just telling me that I can pay more or wait? The folks complaining seem to think it's the latter. Since BL hasn't effectively communicated about why they are doing this, I'm inclined to agree. Sure, we can see how this is good for BL. But consumers are correctly (according to the consumerist ethic) wondering how this is supposed to be good for us.

For me, I don't care whether its typical publishing practice or not, I still find it impractical and damaging to the business I give provide as a customer. Similarly, I wouldn't care if games-workshop's prices were justified; there's only so much I'm willing to pay for a product.

Admittedly, that's not the kind of attitude businesses care for - or probably typically find - in customers and so is usually ignored...

I understand that Hardback - some unit of time - Paperback is publishing industry standard, but we've had 6 years of Paperback first (and only) with the Horus Heresy novels. That's now going away. I'm willing to pay $10 for a paperback Horus Heresy Book. I'm unwilling to pay for a $30 Horus Heresy Book, hardback, paperback, or hand delivered by a hot stripper.

So, now I'll be waiting however long it is for the paperback release, assuming I don't tire of the HH by then.

Edit: I'm not out-right bitching so much as mildly whining. I'm working on my Chaos Space Marines now, anyway. So my hobby time is spoken for...

Well Angel Exterminatus is in paperback in July I think; which is 11 months between it and the last HH novel (the dubious - IMHO - Fear to Tread), rather than novella (Shadows and Brotherhood).
