it has always been hinted, but never confirmed, that the Black Dragons are from Salamanders geneseed...
it is mentioned in the book, and their skin grows grey and scaley as they age...
there is also a Black Dragon Marine in the Salamanders Tome of Fire series...
the Sallies rescued him from the Dark Eldar, and feel obligated to try and help him, even though he is a complete maniac...
off to read Van Horstmann now...
should be a great story...
freeing a two-headed Chaos Dragon from below the College of Magic, hell yeah!!!
i still have that awesome mini, too...

I always thought the hints were that the 21st, cursed founding, were an experiment from trying to use stored Traitor legion geneseed? I'm pretty sure it was written as a rumour (as no-one really knows) but in the original background bit for them that was written in WD and then eventually the Index Astartes books.
Although going on what you've said Jah-Joshua it looks like that's been over-written with the new Salamander books.

21st founding is still in, but no mention of Traitor geneseed...
Salamanders geneseed is still a "rumor"...
no dramatic retcon on the fluff in this book, as far as i could see...
Von Hortsmann is shaping up to be pretty good so far...

A RETURN TO RYNN'S WORLD
With Black Library Live 2013 looming ever closer, we thought we’d reveal one of the exciting new products that will be exclusively available at this and other Black Library events this year. Traitor’s Gorge is a Space Marine Battles story by Mike Lee, and is the first in a new range of event-exclusive novellas that will only be available at Black Library sales stands. That’s right – you won’t even be able to buy Traitor’s Gorge from blacklibrary.com
The book is a hardback novella, complete with hardcover in the colours of the Crimson Fists Chapter, a dustjacket featuring cover artwork by Clint Langley, and a colour section containing everything you’d expect from a Space Marine Battles title, including a campaign map and beautiful character portraits by Sam Lamont. Not only that, but each copy is numbered and we’re only printing 1,000. And with the story being exclusive to this format for at least a year, this is a seriously collectable artefact.
Packed with action, Traitor’s Gorge sheds new light on a piece of lore from Codex: Space Marines. Here’s what it’s about:
It has been half a year since the Crimson Fists were laid low by the invasion of their home world and the loss of their fortress-monastery. In that time, Chapter Master Pedro Kantor has led his battle-brothers in the fight to reclaim their planet from the greenskin menace that plagues them still.
On a mission to wipe a pocket of aliens in the Jaden Mountains, Kantor and his small band of warriors find that the orks have gathered around an influential leader and are greater in number than the beleaguered Space Marines could ever have imagined. Vastly outnumbered and surrounded by the foe, the Crimson Fists prepare to sell their lives dearly in the name of their world, their primarch and their Chapter.
But help is at hand from a most unexpected source…
To secure your copy of Traitor’s Gorge, come along to any of the Black Library events this summer. Check out the events page for details and sign up to our newsletter to make sure you have the most up to date information on where we’ll be.
If you want to be among the first to get your hands on the novella, pick up your ticket for Black Library Live 2013 here.
..I'm at BL Live! so might well pick one of these up, do have something of a soft spot for Pedro and his boys.

Well, you've got to give them credit for the originality of the plot; pretty sure the Crimson Fists have never been in that kinda situation before.
Also, 10 bucks says their mysterious saviours are the Soul Drinkers.

Really?
This kind of thing is really frustrating. Black Library needs to shift its focus back to producing paperbacks and making them widely available. Limited edition hardback "novellas" are a waste of time, resources, and attention.

"Black Library" indeed. Much like its namesake, BL has created a repository of forbidden lore concealed deep within the labyrinthine passages of the webway.
Even Ahriman, most wizardly of the Astartes, will be able to access the impenetrable secrets protected there only by attending Game Days or by paying extravagant sums (including exorbitant postage and handling offerings) for tiny driblets of knowledge.
Evidently the sagas of the far future are too dangerous to be allowed to circulate freely.
Which would be funny, if it wasn't slowly but surely killing my fondness for this stuff.

The HH series will now have a hardback version first of all, followed a few months later by a trade paperback version , which is a format slightly larger than the Space marine Battles series --- see picture below -- thanks to Mr. DarkChaplain for the snap. In months there's not a new HH book an older one will be/should be released in this hardback format until the entire range is available.
then -- as quoted on their FB page
The mass-market paperback will be released 6 months after the trade paperback, which means 'Angel Exterminatus' will be out in June this year.
.. so... yeah.. there we go. Whatever one's opinions of this move they sure don't appear to be doing a good job at getting message out for people to know. And -- compared to GW anyway -- BL always used to be pretty open and good at this sort of thing.

IT HAS PRETTY PICTURES!
Many professionally written history books have images scattered throughout it with caption. They may be trying to go for that feel, but since the book isn't written as a history book I doubt it.

I find it incredible how the background of the Crimson Fists has changed over the years - from that cover of Rogue Trader, with the last stand and the rockets coming in to finish them off, to now 'clearing out the orks'. I actually quite enjoyed Rynn's World, as a solid bit of actiony-pulp fair, but I can't help but feel that something has been lost when the defining grim-dark moment of the 40k universe has been reversed and now the heroes out kicking tail and taking names.

Does 'Betrayer' have any real relationship to Angel Exterminatus? Or can one read that comfortably without reading the other?

There's no relationship no. Both are just "2 traitor Primarchs team up for x adventure", with Betrayer being Lorgar/Angron and Angel Exterminatus being Fulgrim/Perturabo.

I did, though I was loath to do so - as others have said 40,000 times, I can't stand the limited edition BUY IT NOW approach that they're getting more and more in to, though equally I know that I'd want to read it and I'll be damned if I'm going to pay the exorbitant eBay prices. Hell, I saw some bloke selling Mephiston on eBay - before they'd even stopped taking orders through BL - for over £100. It's ridiculous. How long til Black Library turns in to a Black Market? I might be tempted to type the limited editions up and flog them by pdf for £10 a time, just so I don't feel daft for shelling out a ridiculous amount of money (for what it is anyway), and to help others not to miss out.
Pm me for orders people.
Disclaimer - not a serious offer, I somehow doubt that I'll make enough to combat their lawyers.
Regarding the Black Dragons, bring it on! I loved the character that you met in Commorragh in Tome of Fire and instantly wanted to hear more of them. As if I don't have enough projects on the go, I'm considering modelling a small force out of nowt but Chaos Raptors. On that note, I wonder if the artist was in anyway linked to art work for the Warp Talons. There's only the antlers that allow me to compare the two, but still it's a pretty unique characteristic in so far as Marines of any variety goes, so it does leave me curious.

Honestly, I wasn't impressed with Exterminatus. However, I did enjoy the Betrayer a great deal--and think Angron is one of the better (more realistic) fallen Primarchs written.

Published on 15 Feb 2013
Even amongst the eldar, the Harlequins are a capricious, mysterious breed. When a troupe of these deadly warrior-performers discovers a dead Craftworld festering in the webway, they are determined to find the one responsible and exact punishment. Using the ancient craft of their Shadowseer, the trail of destruction leads the troupe to the Sable Marches, a fringe realm of the dark eldar. With several possible suspects of this heinous crime, the Harlequins decide to draw out the guilty one by staging the Masque of Vyle for the archons, a performance that will expose the truth and lead, fatally, to the perpetrator.
ABOUT THE BOOK
A brand new dark eldar novella by Andy Chambers, presented in premium hardback format.
.. Thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Chambers DE work thus far.. so.. I'm sold on this ! Automatically Appended Next Post: http://chriswraight.wordpress.com/
Want a signed hardback of Space Wolves: Blood of Asaheim? Want to get it before (almost) anyone else? If so, here’s what you need to do: come up with the name of an original 40K character and tweet it to my address, plus a mini-bio for it. Add the hashtag #BoAComp so I can find it.
You’ll have to be concise – that leaves you only around 120 characters to play with. It’s worth making it good, though, as I’m currently planning the second book in the series and thinking about what’s going in it. If I like your idea enough, I’ll add the winning character as a brief cameo, thus immortalising your creation in print. Here’s an example (that is neither original nor very good) to give you the idea:
@wraightc #BoAComp Ragnar Blackmane: youngest ever Wolf Lord, heir to Berek Thunderfist; rash, brash and impetuous; called the Young King.
If that sounds good to you, start thinking, and then start tweeting. I’ll keep the competition open until just before BL Live – midnight GMT on Thursday 28 Feb – and any tweets received before then will be considered. You can send as many in as you like, but bear in mind that if you spam me with dozens then you’re unlikely to win – try to limit entries to two or three ideas at most. I’ll contact the winner the following week, and I’ll publish the results, and the best runners-up, here.
You can suggest names from any part of the 40K mythos, but it’s worth pointing out that the factions represented in Book II are likely to be Space Wolves (naturally), various bits of the Ecclesiarchy including Battle Sisters, and Imperial civilians, governors, etc. There’s also a fair chance that servants of the Dark Gods will turn up, who may suffer from a fair degree of plague, pox, rheumatism, etc. If the winning character name isn’t from one of these factions but is amazing enough, then it’ll have achieved the mighty feat of actually influencing the plot.
So, that’s it. Good luck!
Rules and Stuff
1. Character name and bio must be original and created by you: neither an existing part of the 40K background nor any other fictional background.
2. Inclusion of the character into upcoming books is subject to editorial consent. If it gets used in a Black Library publication, then it’ll be copyright Black Library.
.. good luck folks ! Cool prize

Dan Abnett's Blog wrote:I've got a full workload in front of me, and this Horus Heresy novel isn't going to just write itself (before you ask, it's The Unremembered Empire, direct sequel to both my Know No Fear AND Aaron's Betrayer, and The Lion hasn't actually punched Guilliman yet, but the fan and the faeces are going to meet when they both find out which other of their brothers are present in Macragge City...).
I doubt I'll get it in hardcover, but I will probably pick up the oversizedpaperback version of this book methinks. Lion El'Jonson has fast become one of my favourite Primarchs, over the course of 2 short stories...

"It is the great irony of the Legiones Astartes: engineered to kill to achieve a victory of peace that they can then be no part of."
- Roboute Guilliman
"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now."

so, i've gotten caught up on most of the recent releases...
Angel Exterminatus: i liked it, a fresh Primarch to explore, and Fulgrim getting closer to his apotheosis...
Death of Antagonis: good read, with no real new info on the Black Dragons, but no retcons either...
Von Horstmann: great read, and i'm not as much of a Fantasy fan as i am 40K...
really nice to see some books taking place in the past of the Warhammer world, fleshing out the history...
Betrayer: AD-B is awesome as usual, but this time we see a different side of Lorgar, and Angron gets closer to his apotheosis...
Gotrek and Felix - Road of Skulls: i always enjoy these novels, but this was one of the best for me since they visit the Slayer Keep...
Slayers are my favorite Dwarfs, and i've always been curious about their king, hold, and temple...
one interesting thing to note, Road of Skulls felt like a lot of the new WoC stuff got some time in this book, and there always seems to be some tie-in fiction for each new release...
well, there is a new Tau novel coming in March, so make of that what you will for the Tau coming soon rumors...
i'm reading Arhriman Exile right now...
it's already starting off with a time period in Ahriman's life that we previously knew nothing about, in a good way...
bodes well for this being an interesting read...
next up may be Neferata, since she was my favorite character in the Nagash novels...
cheers
