Hey again Skrall!

Loving the stuff as usual. Those libbys are very preety, especially the work on their eyes. If this has been previously answered then don't mind me, but, how do you paint your Iron Warriors? I got started on a Cataphractii and silver washed with black isn't enough, yours looks more dirtier, grittier and more, well, Iron Warriors-like. Any help would be very much appreciated! Also, what's the best way of weathering? I believe you mentioned sponge before but I've never done that so any tips would be nice if you don't mind.

Hey crimson, there are plans to do one i just haven't had the time. With 1 squad left i should be able to put one up.

Now for some more stuff painted! asides from needing to finish the scouts touch ups i'm now down to one unit and a lascannon to finish my 1500pt list.

Six months of silence has now been shattered. I have returned to my chaos log once more, enriched by my time doing a pre-heresy force (so expect a major jump in quality).

This time i'm going to be making most of those termies from earlier in this thread. I want to make a termie army, and i've never had much luck using space wolves (that drop pod penalty is a pain) so i settled on this list to begin with;

Barbas (Belial), sword of silence, storm bolter
190pts

Ziminiar (Terminator Librarian), Force Axe, divination
95pts

Squad Asmodeus (Deathwing Knights) with relic
245pts

Squad Asag (DW), assault cannon, chainfist
245pts
Squad Gusion (DW), Plasmacannon, chainfist
240pts
Squad Ipos (DW), plasmacannon
240pts
Squad Byleth (DW), Cyclone missile launcher, chainfist
250pts

I know the quality is all over the place with these, but this is a salvage and rebuild project, so don't judge until its done. The Knights will be made by converting the cataphractii (see the front guy with the mace.)

The only group that i'm happy with, Squad Asag.

Plenty of character in there.... just 22 terminators to finish building.

Update time, Squad Byleth is close to being finished, but i feel it needs something adding to it. I've also been toying with magnetisation before i snapped my drill bit doing the heavy weapon magnets (i want to be able to switch the autocannon with a plasmacannon for WYSIWYG).

i've also stripped and modified my chaos sorc for wysiwyg;

Updates for Ipos and Gusion, the plasmacannons arrived and have been magnetised. It's created two particularly bad ass unit members. I'm now about 90% wysiwyg, with work left to do, i've also found an old apoth-kit from a GK set, so now i've got a medik for any future command squads.

Now for the update.... 97% done veteran squad, meaning once i've done the last bits it's just the aegis lascannon left.

Task Force Drakhov; the coming of the World Eaters

Over several campaigns the World Eaters and Iron Warriors fought side by side, complimenting one anothers strengths and weakness' and making an assault force unrivaled by almost no other. The two grew close, and often sent task forces at the other requests to aid in campaigns. Such a force was gathered before the battles of the world marked 'KRV-7845', a world with an indigenous xeno/abhuman population. They were heavily fortified with a host of sky defences. Drop pods were ruled to crude, and an orbital strike would prove to damage many of the resources that made the world worthy of such attention.

A new tactic was required, and so it was a mixed force was dispatched in a mixture of stormeagles and a new issue varient, capable of holding 12 marines and a dreadnought (modern imperial archivists argue this is the first sign of the stormraven, but no evendence has been confirmed). This force was sent, making use of a gap in the defences - operating in the narrow bracket between ground and arial scanning networks - to secure a landing zone. The World Eaters were to act as the spear tip, shatting the intitial defence whilst the iron warrior founded a solid and defendable beach head. This has since become a standard practise in certain assault, with the small force Angron keeps with Pertrubo aiding in assault with various companies.

So yeah bit of lore, the idea being a small force of marines accompanies the 122nd. Here's the tester for them;

thoughts? i've toned down the damage and thrown in small amounts of blood.

Paint in progress time, i've decided to go back the pre-heresy project until next week, when i'll be switching to the tau project.

I'm currently working on Dreadnought Ancient Decimos 'The Volcano'. The lighting is early stages yet, so don't judge too harshly, but once it's done i can start tonight down the wear and tear as well.

After many moons of promising i've done a basic tutorial on iron warrior painting. This is not an indepth one as many of the processes in use are visable on the more in depths imperial fist tutorial.

So let us begin;

Start with a black basecoat, if your like me (shoestring budget) then you'll be able to make a spray booth from a cardboard box just to keep your local environment clean.

Next up is your basic colours. In this case boltgun, dwarf bronze and black to produce the base scheme in use on any iron warriors.

This is a duel step, start by washing the mini with a homebrew wash. 20/20 black and brown with 60 water to ensure it can be used. If it needs thinning more then feel free, this step is about how grimdark you want to make it.

The second part is using a rust powder liberally on the mini. Don't cover everthing, but any recesses you'll get a good contrast out of in the next step.

Another duel step, this time do the fiddly detail work. I've added hazard stripes to most sections of the mini i've felt they would look good on.

After that it's time for the sponge.

1. 50/50 black applied lightly to break up the boltgun and rust.
2. mithril silver on edges, or on any OTT rust area's. This will break up what up till this point has been a fairly monotone mini.

Now go back in an highlight the gold spots, and clean up any detailing you want to come threw. By not rusting the gold you put in play one of the three elements that offset the rust and allow the scheme to work. It's also worth doing the lens work at this point,

Next up is basing and OLS. I haven't done a tutorial on these because i use rather a wierd basing technique for my mini's which i doubt many people will want to emulate. OLS tutorial are fairly easy to find by people more gifted at producing tutorials than I.

I'm going to step off these mini's into another mini to explain the 'lens' process i use. In the case of the iron warriors its red, but all the steps are the same

Start by painting up the lights and darks, making sure you keep a consistent bright point in both eyes (or in the case of the mk2's, somewhere on that cyclopian eye)

Coat this in a tamya clear colour, i use red or green most often.

it's then just a matter of tidying up any overrun.

any questions feel free to ask, i'll answer as best i can.

-skrall

p.s. and a bit of fun to break up the seemingly endless posts by me.

In the meantime, about 7 months ago i rush complete a pre-heresy iron warrior Army. I have rescently gotten them out of the box and engaged in some personal dismay at the lazyness on half the mini's. As such, i've put them all in the great iron cleaning tub ready to be reforged from the 122nd into the 47th Grand Company, with new schemes and all!

Before that, this is how the unit's in the old force looked before they went into the stripper;

Now it's the chosen day, i'm finally happy with the basic pose of my primarch. I have decided to move away from the terminator HH era Perturabo in terminator armour. I know forgeworld will produce something amazing so i'm not even going to bother trying to compete. Instead i have begun the subtle process of giving him a highly modified Mk III.

Note his hammer will and right arm will be the last thing i build due to the complexity of designing/rebuilding and posing the hand and hammer. Feedback on the basics is welcomed though,

At the least, I'd say take the ammo drums off of the SB and do an ammo belt to his backpack, because that's a whole lot of height and weight on that arm, but I think cutting down the whole SB to be smaller would look better. Maybe grab one from a GK termie.

I'd have to agree on the ammo belt idea, or just do the silly ultramarine thing and say it was taken from a demon champion and the gauntlet creates its own ammo.

both solid suggestions. I'm avoiding the modern bolter as i like the photos pattern, but i realised the ammo drum made gave him a mickey mouse look.

Update time, detailing continues as well as a few minor adjustments. Still got a way to go. I've gone for a mkIII Early crusade look, avoiding the later crusader/HH termie design.

Now for the update. I have decided to take a week or so off from the primarch work, and indulge in painting. I'm going to try to complete the cataph's and at least one, maybe two, units of iron warrior infantry. I did a few more touch ups last night, but i doubt they will show in the scale picture below.

Thoughts on the new scheme welcome, since theres two models to compare it on. Note i've left one shoulder blank for legion pads when they get released.

Now you've listened to me trying to sell stuff, here's some terminators who need only a few touch ups once i can get some better light tomorrow.

Well i was wondering why i got no feedback on the termies... with the photobucket limit i must be popular.

Until it resets, and whilst i work on perturabo/further reclaiming of mini's here's a picture of what i've gathered so far, in various conditions.

Note; the landraider was £18 from ebay, and it's condition matched it price. It's taken 4 attempts to remove the over the top paint, and no small amount of remodelling to make it look less... fethed. I'm still tinkering with most of this kit but i figured why not throw up a photo of the models so far.

Yes, it doesn't look terribly professional, but this is just a book mark while i wait for my main photo bucket to cool down. I'm away next week so it'll be a brief break.

Also another plug of My ebay, most of it goes tomorrow morning. with the new SM release it's going to fund the iron warriors spartan tank and preators, but also bag me a few choice unit's for my iron hands force.

As always, thanks for looking guys!

Now for an update. I'd like to thank anyone who bidded for my plague army last night, it sold for a fairly good sum. In fact, i have been able to use the funds to buy a contemptor for this army, as well as buy some select forgeworld pieces for my upcoming Space Marine army, the Imperial Fists. More on that later, for now let's show some pictures of the first tactical squad, note like most of the models so far i am taking a break at 95% painted so i can go back in a week or two's time and make any adjustments to the final paint work with fresh eyes.

Now for the pre-new log post. Seven years ago i collected Imperial fists (admittedly i was 16 and couldn't paint for feth). I'd become entranced with both them and the Iron warriors thanks to Storm of Iron (which is still the most read book i own, with the possible exception of Only in Death) and decided to collect an army. Things moved on, the Imperial Fists were left and forgotten beneath the machines of ork and chaos.... but this new codex wanting to return to them. Like all iron warriors players it seems i have a soft spot for imerial fists...

Now for the giggle, i've found a picture of my old captain Eshara...

And the new Veteran Sgt;

"You don't know the things I dream," said Perturabo. "No one does, no one ever cared enough to find out."

As many people know i started building a purturabo a few weeks ago and my break period is nearly up. I've been working today on making a new weapon for him as the hammer he's famous for in the heresy doesn't appear until the horus heresy period. As such i've started work on a spear.

Why a spear you ask? I thought about a few weapons but a spear felt... the most fitting. The hammer is a symbol of what the iron warriors were to become, but at this stage pertuarbo is still a fresh faced primarch looking to please his father. I thought about a trident, as an obvious greek connection, but it seemed a bit lacking in imagination. Instead i've decided to pursue another path, an enlarged Custodes style spear called the Olyndicus. As Perturabo has a good working relationship with Vulkan it seemed a natural choice for it to be a gift of kinship between the two, a prelude to later artifices they would work on.

Angel Exterminatus has highlighted a few characteristics i can currently trying to bring into my works, but it's proving hard because of my own take on the legion. I enjoyed the psuedo greek feel of the Olympian culture, i enjoy the lonely warrior and tortured genius of the man. I can actually see the family connection between Perturabo and Guilliman now... both are warriors, designed, builiders, politicians and craftsman who actually dream of what comes after the crusader. I really like that... but as the Horus Heresy novels unfold i feel more sympathy for the iron warriors, and my dislike of the Ultramarines is still growing but is steadily been eclipised by my hatred for the Word Bearers. The two deserved each other, and Calth...

I digress though. I am going to, with some luck, be updating this with images of Olyndicus and Perturabo. In the meantime i would appreciate some feedback or some discussion on the idea behind this angle. Hopefully the update will provide more to go on... but since there hasn't been much of a discussion with my audience on the projects background, i feel it's time we did so.

Here's some music to put you in the mindset...

Time for the promised photo's of perturabo, i've begun reworking the fists and added the spear. This is largely a mock up of the final pose, there's still some refinement to be done and detailing to be added (when isn't there?) but this should give an idea of the fine look.
