I just think anyone who says that the 40K RPG doesn't have enough scope when a game like Rogue Trader exists just doesn't know what they're talking about.

What is it with this thread and people saying incredibly strange things? 40K is just a really limited universe for good roleplaying or storytelling. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if you enjoy it, but there's just not much substance. I like to write good stories if I'm going to invest the time to run a game, and they just aren't really present in 40K.
Like I said, I think Dark Heresy would make a good setting for a short-length Call of Cthulu style game, but that's about it. I don't see any potential for a long term narrative without stretching the boundaries of what's plausible for the setting. Deathwatch just sounds like a waste of time, Only War is worse, and Black Crusade seems like it would be fun if I was interested in crafting a narrative where all of the player characters were sociopaths, lol.
Everyone's mileage will vary, but yeah, the 40K setting is just too restrictive in what the characters can see and do before it turns silly. If I wanted to run a Rogue Trader campaign of inter-stellar meandering, I'd just use a setting that was more permissive instead of massaging 40K's canon until it worked the way I wanted it to. /shrug
Glad you have fun with it though.

Sorry, but that's complete crazy talk. You get out of RPGs what you put into them. If you're having trouble using the 40K setting, then that's something you're doing wrong, not a failing of the setting. 40K's setting is basically limitless because of the way GW have set it up. It spans such a huge time frame, covers so many possible planets and areas, and is so intentionally vague in small areas that the limits are what you make of it, not what's in the written material.

Maybe you have a lower threshold for good storytelling than I do. /shrug
I don't find the universe that interesting nor possessing the depth for a campaign unless I'm willing to compromise and make it Myhammer 40K and not Warhammer 40K. That's pretty much the beginning and end of it.
If I'm going to play 40K, I'm going to play 40K. If we're not playing 40K, why am I bothering with DH's clunky mechanics?
Like I said, if you enjoy it, the more power to you. But you're never going to win an argument where you try to convince me that the 40K universe is a better setting that the games I've written for. It's not awful, but it's a one off, or two off game system. I'd never have the attention span to write for 40K long term. It's a universe full of cartoon characters.

40K is a setting. The story is something you right, that is to say the story is what you make it. Any lack of depth would be something you'd be dealing with, not the fault of the setting. It really isn't. There are some limitations in Only War and Deathwatch as they are very combat heavy but even then there is a lot of scope for more cerberal game play, especially if you can create a more open setting (a Naval boarding party, Rogue Trader house troops etc).
Rogue Trader is almost completely open ended though, more so that most RPGs that I have played in fact (its not often that you have access to Starships and nearly unlimited resources).

Rogue Trader is a massive sandbox accompanied by the tools needed if one desires to add more toys to play with. The sky is the limit.
If people claim that it is limiting then the GM is a fething donkey-cave. If you are the GM in question, you fething donkey-cave you.

I suppose the only 'limitation' is that it is set in the 40K Galaxy.
So, if you don't want to role play in the 40K Galaxy, yes, it is very limiting.
Otherwise, not so much.
Also known as, different strokes, different folks or everyone has their opinions, etc. etc. etc.

When the insults start coming out, such as paragraphs and paragraphs of "Hurr durr! You're a nerd with no friends", you've really only got two options: 1. Fight back, which can be fun, but really serves no practical purpose given the purpose of this thread is for FFG news items and the discussions related to those items. 2. Walk away and find something more far more important to do, like continuing to breathe and metabolise. Sleep even. I've found that some people are like walls. If you walk away, the wall doesn't follow you. So, onto ignore he goes. Out of sight, out of mind.

On a side note, I've come to realise it's one of the best RPG's to explore the theme of power, and how it corrupts people and invites abuse. Other RPG's that address that theme (Aberrant, Exalted) give the PC's inherent super-powers, but the interesting thing about Rogue Trader is that the characters are relatively normal people, whose power for the most part comes from their property, wealth and influence. In other words, it can all be taken from them--they can lose it all fairly easily, and can die fairly easily if they run into an enemy or crisis they can't handle with their assets.
That relative vulnerability, like with many real-world people of wealth, gives PC's a strong built-in reason to consider going to extreme lengths and consider reprehensible acts to maintain and increase their wealth. The tone is morally neutral, neither condoning nor condemning such deeds in the authorial tone, or having morality mechanics that enforce or punish certain types of behaviour. You can go full-bore King Leopold out in the wilderness where nobody will judge you, or create a private utopia in a cruel universe. But you're not forced into anything, there's only your Profit Factor, and the question of whether you can sleep at night.

It's also nice that it has the rules for the Dominate forces so that you can actually play the other side. The various medals and honours at the end are quite fun as well. Overall it's far more than yet another bestiary, which is good as otherwise it would have been a lot of repetition.

I read through the free game one-offs and had a ball with them. stuff's free to start out with, and you can really do alot with it.
I really like that Black Crusade one, and never wanted to cave someones head in for the heck of it in a game like I did in that one. Had the fun that comes with takeing over a chaos ship and rolling into the next level.
STIll curious as to when we're going to see the Ork game, but damn was that chaos one pretty open ended.
Then theres that Only War. I read through that in the store and couldn't put that damn book down, so I bought it.
I'm not understanding the bit about not being able to write a good story out of the games, I could come up with at least a hundred and not even try with what they have for material, and I'm not just pushing the issue.
You can do a hell of a lot with any one of those one-offs can take the game any number of ways. I'm not really understanding how you couldn't? I mean, damn, you could play pretty much ANY facet of the 40K game that you'd want to, from a small unit leader, to a chaos warlord, to anything...
I'd even see having fun putting together a couple of Ork characters, hiring on as mercenaries with the IG or Tau, or Chaos and going in and ripping up some stuff, heck even playing a GROT in such a team would be a friggin riot. Even being a rebel guard who hires on with a chaos band would be pretty open ended. add in a couple of characters, such as a Kroot, or a Tau player, and you could really turn some stuff upside down, if the game wasn't so deadly to characters....

I got the Rogue Trader rulebook and storyteller screen for Christmas. I specifically wish to start this game up because it's boundaries are so broad as to be non-existent. It's a very big galaxy and I can really enjoy throwing in stand alone away missions, huge story arcs and include anything and everything I wish in it.
I am hard-pressed to imagine a game less limiting that having a billion worlds to play on and a thousand races to play with or against. Perhaps Amber?

Aye, as said, the sky is the limit, or in most cases, your GM can be your biggest constraint. The scenario I played in for over two years saw us as naval officers locked away in a certain sector. Sure, we had a whole sector to explore, but the freedom was somewhat lacking as we were always herded or shoved into a certain direction.

On your issue: the 40k universe actually has a lot of interesting RP options, depending on what sort of story you want to tell.
(BTW: On my adventure having nids: RT run into genestealers all the time, and the Jericho Reach is a hop skip and a jump away. Having a Tyranid incursion through the gate was the gist of the adventure I ran. Port Wander was briefly overrun. It's also implied there are lictors sneaking around the sector)
