It's definitely softer than the usual styrene. I haven't handled clix figures much, but it seems similar.

Scraping mold lines with the flat of a knife didn't work well, but it cuts easily, and files work just fine. The feel of the material is a little strange to get used to.

I also tested out the "no primer needed" claim. I dabbed on some old GW foundation paint, let it dry for ~10 minutes and tried to gently rub it off. No go. I worked at it for a good couple of minutes and eventually managed to work most of it off the highest ridges, and smudge some color around. Some Vallejo model color rubbed off very easily for whatever reason, but all the citadel stuff stuck tight. I finished painting it with GW stuff, and I'd say the finish is probably as good as if I painted a metal figure and varnished it.

JonnyB wrote:I have to ask. I don't play Chaos, but might as Allies with my Cron. Could those Demons be used as a Greater Demons? Would they be size appropriate?

That's exactly what I plan to use them for.
I like the second pic in Sean_Obrien's post best. The one on the right is on a 2" base, which is almost identical to a 50mm square fantasy base. So maybe a bit shorter than a Bloodthirster, but still comparable IMO.

Slinky wrote:I don't really know why as I don't currently play any games these could be used for, but Kickstarter is funny like that

I feel the same way. I want a bunch of the options, but I don't have much use for most of the 'fantasy adventurer' types. And yet, I find myself trying to rationalize why I should get them anyway.

I've compared it to the "clix" figures and it's a fair bit different. The Clix plastic has some bend to it, but feels slightly dry and brittle. You can bend them slowly but you can also snap them with a quick break. The bones plastic is bendier and feels denser. I bought the purple worm and the Gnoll to test it out - you can bend, twist and smash it and it won't break - just snaps back into place. It feels like a really dense detailed board game piece.

I also did the multi-paint test and totally agree with you - Foundation paint - or the Reaper HD high def paint - work amazingly well. I put a layer of foundation paint then ink and layer with normal paint and I was not able to scratch off the paint once it was wholly dry. I was very impressed.

I've never actually handled a Bones mini, but I figure there enough people who have. Is the plastic used in the Bones minis anything like the plastic used for the models in the SuperDungeon Explore game by SodaPop? I have handled that stuff and I do own quite a few Heroclix and Cryptek's description of Bones plastic made me think of SDE. If the plastic is like the SDE plastic I think that'd be very very cool to get a pile of miniatures in. Although gluing that SDE dragon....grrr!

Oh and new molds, less mold lines! Yay!

No - Bones is softer and more rubber-y than the hard plastic SDE uses. It's nice stuff though.

Just turn off your computer and take your little lady for a nice dinner and some drinks.

Don't think about Reaper or their new plastic miniatures line. You can always just buy the ones you want individually lat...

OH MY GOD!!! GET IN HERE AND LOOK AT THIS NEW STRETCH GOAL!!! Are you kidding me!

I just counted all the minis that you get at this stretch....231.

231 minis for $100. That's like less than .50 a piece.

Some of them are quite big too.

That's insane.

ve used all the various miniature materials and even repainted a bunch of prepaints (D&D, mage Knight, Heroclix, etc) . I find bones to be superior to all other vinyl type figs (similar physical properties, but much better detail) and on par with plastic and metal figs for detail and quality. I realize that the springy nature of Bones will worry some folks, but it really is quite firm (unless you purposely bend it) and it doesn't affect the paintjob, As a miniature casting material, I have yet to see where Bones is inferior to metal, hard plastic or resin.

Alpharius wrote:I have to admit, this is the first I've really heard about/paid attention to the "Bones" material - is it really a big deal or a potentially negative thing?

I think it's actually a positive, especially for larger models. It holds it shape well (it won't melt in a car like some resin or plastiresin) and yet is light and flexible enough that a fall to the floor won't damage it. Also, it's much lighter than metal, so larger models benefit alot from being made in Bones as wings, limbs and other extensions won't break as easily as with metal or resin.

The one drawback is that Bones isn't yet made in multipart kits, so they're not customizable as easily as GW-style plastic kits. It is extremely easy to cut however, and superglue will bond it very well.

Hatemonger wrote:

Scraping mold lines with the flat of a knife didn't work well, but it cuts easily, and files work just fine. The feel of the material is a little strange to get used to.

I also tested out the "no primer needed" claim. I dabbed on some old GW foundation paint, let it dry for ~10 minutes and tried to gently rub it off. No go. I worked at it for a good couple of minutes and eventually managed to work most of it off the highest ridges, and smudge some color around. This was roughly my experience also. Bones doesn't file or scrape. Flash (though there's usually almost none) has to be cut away or you can reportedly get an emery board to "file" it off. I bought one and tried it out and it wasn't any more difficult to cleanup than a metal/plastic/resin fig, you just use a different technique.

As for the no-primer thing, I used my usual Craft paints in the Folk Art and Delta brands and they stick great and cover well. The exception was the Folk Art metallics which took two coats to cover, but that was probably a paint issue.

the options boy.... the options!

I understand that afterward, people will be able to "trade" the vampire stuff for the options/extras listed. It may very well be that I'll be getting a handful of dragons and megamonsters instead of 200 miniatures....

I love that I'll finally be able to justify hulk-ifying the one golem. I've wanted to do one for a while but couldn't bring my self to spend the money on a totally silly mini I'm not really interested in. But at 2-3 dollars it's only a matter of finding the green stuff.

Yeah, that's why this one doesn't work for me- so many various different kinds of models, and I could only use a few... but I can see the value overall, I just don't think it would be worth it for me.

^ Yeah, same.

I'd feel bad about having 150 of the minis destined to be stuck in my wardrobe for all eternity, doomed to the "never going to paint" pile, while I paint and use the other 50+ that I have a use for and the big dragon.

Awesome Kickstarter though, most well-managed KS by any tabletop gaming company, ever. Having accountants run the joint definitely helps. I love how they are still able to offer freebies to everyone even at this late stage, by calculating their expenses and making the stretch goals gradually longer so that they can still afford to make the freebies happen.

check the videos, one of them mentions that if you don't want X, you can trade it for Y, and one of them was sophie. They hinted that when the survey or manager or whatever comes out, that you'd be able to do quite a heck of a lot with it, which suggests to me that everything is interchangeable or swappable. They're probably doing themselves a favor, because if someone only wants a few big items and is willing to trade all of their wee stuff for it, then, hott damn, it saves them money and labor.

As for all the comments about unwanted minis

Turn them into lots, and sell them off for a wee ammount... Or find a D&D ring or whatever that didn't realise this deal was going on and sell them the unwanted stuff. They'd be willing to take it....

Then there's the fact that you could always make a game board with lots and LOTS of statuary... maybe a grave-yard centered on heros past. Or just monochrome them, wash them and use them as gaming pieces for your other board/social games.... Make a chess set, or a hnefatafl set. The list of uses is endless, honestly.
