I like what little I know about the rules and the design team certainly looks promising. A fantasy skirmish game that gets away from UGO IGO and allows me to use almost any models that I own is worth a demo play at least.

I'm not crazy about a few things though. The name "Fanticide' and the title "Homicidal Warbands" carry negative baggage on a subconscious level and don't seem to be family friendly gaming material. The minis are not very appealing to me except for the Eun and maybe the flying monkeys because they're relatively novel in the current miniature market.

The spell templates look interesting. I missed them in the Kickstarter options though.

For the curious. here is the link to JHall's original Alien Dungeon: Fanticide thread. In it you can read more about the development of the game.

Ultimately, I think I will use the rules and action cards with better looking minis.

The secret to painting a really big army is to keep at it. You can't reach your destination if you never take any steps.

Usenet called, they want their lack of manners back.

I'm excited to hear the game is flexible when it comes to designing your own warband. I already have a lot of miniatures for fantasy skirmish and the Reaper Bones thing is going to increase them even further.

I'm definitely going to keep tabs on this Kickstarter.

I like the card activation idea. I like the idea of leaders reactivating squads for more actions.

I like the model count of around 30 miniatures.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I'm not interested in this Kickstarter, but I do plan to buy the rulebook at some stage. Might pick up the cards as well. I'll do it from a free-shipping discount UK retailer though, as it'll be significantly cheaper than via KS.

The possibility of making bands with minis you already own is very attractive, but I think it will be still unlikely to see gamers interested in Fanticide in my city.

This is me as well. Except that it will be a US discount retailer though.

The miniatures don't interest me at all. When did "Charming" and "Characterful" become cover for "Poorly Sculpted"?

That is quite likely to happen. Although I also went in for the Goalsystem Delves KS, and that will be their primary use.

I have a mountain of reaper coming and this is where I will funnel most of them. Lots of greats options there.

If you look on the website they have some examples of custom warbands as well as the official ones.

The thing that kills me on this one is there is no $10 you get a PDF with the cards you can print out yourself option. I don't care for getting the minis and I don't want to spend $45 on the hardback that I may or may not ever use.

Biggest issue I am having is the scope of KS packages I want to fund, VS realistic funds to do it with.

I can always drop a few here and there, but some of these that are currently underway are getting out of my projected ranges, vs the deals that they are.

Between this one, Relic, and a few others, I'm getting ready to drop a few hundred, and as much as I want to, it is going to come down to Time/ Money values. Especially when I am getting into aa few of these other games, that I've got into, even before dropping in the other clank for the new ones.

As to the minis, this is a very good deal, as well. Especially for the range of numbers your looking at here.

I'm really not sure what I think of the alt-fantasy approach. It's neat that it's not your standard fantasy fare, but I'm kind of tired of figure ranges with game rules that have limited usefully ness if they're not bundled together. I don't yet know enough about Fanticide.

Is there warband rules for typical fantasy miniatures? A warband building system perhaps? Something to support my existing collection?

At first I was surprised I had not seen anything about this before. Then I scrolled down and saw that the miniatures were very setting specific. This is one of those things that makes a lot less people likely to dive into a new system. Hopefully they reach their goal though. It is always good to see smaller companies running succesful kickstarter campaigns.

I think you overestimate the relevance of other Kickstarters. They are no more a competition as other games on the shelf-space in a local store are (or used to be).

And as it look atm, there'll be permanently games on Kickstarter from here on out.. at least for a year or so.

Also, where there is competition, there is usually money. That's where you want to be.

But the difference between Kickstarter and having a game on a shelf is that kickstarter is a limited time. A company has so much time to get as many pledges as possible within a small window of time.

Having a starter set/Rule book on the shelves is a different matter.

If I were start a kickstarter I would want to make sure I was not doing at the tail end of multiple large projects where there could be potential backer who already spent their hobby bucks. It's not that they could not buy the game at a later date (having a game already on the shelf), it's that kickstarter is a time sensitive issue.

As someone who is running a kickstarter right now I can tell you did think about BUT I ended up launching anyway because I don't know when there will be a time again without a serious / large company running a kickstarter. Its a sort of damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. Should I wait another three months or six months to launch on the hopes that coolmini will not have another kickstarter?

I'm surprised the names that are working on this. It's a huge put off for me having Fanticide as a name as well as the Homicidal and other tags. I may love the grimdark of 40k but some of the newer games are pushing the insanity and depravity angle a bit too much imho. Too many games and miniature companies are adding things to make them "edgy" and ending up only seeming juvenile or offensive. Not backing this one, but loving the kickstarter updates on dakka thanks!

It's kinda doubly odd with this game.

Having, on one end, a game system that includes mechanics for "make a warband from whatever miniatures you have", written by some of the most recognizable game-designer-names in the industry (even if only as consultants).

On the other hand, a thoroughly niche-game, which seems to go far beyond the miniatures, but right into the game-play (e.g. loony event-cards) and a "parental advisory" rule-book that doesn't seem to want to get broad use or enable "generic" play that much.

I almost wish they would consider gutting the rules from the Fanticide-branding and add them to a more generic "generic" setting that plays to the strengths of "use whatever minis you like"-angle (naming the world "nowhere", as they did, actually would go down well with this "generic" concept).

Just wanted to add in here that they've now thrown in a bunch of free stuff -

2 miniatures from each Faction if you buy the Slasher level ($45) or above,

an extra pack of figures if you buy the Clubber level ($80) or above.

I'm personally in for the $80 clubber level since it's a good discount over retail, the minis are really cool looking, and now there's some extra figures thrown in for free.

The minis are a big let down IMO, the painting is meh, presentation not that good etc KS's need to be visually appealing and this is not in any level.

Agree about the presentation, but man, I'm in love with the Flying Monkeys and the Creeps.

I especially love the flying monkey on carpet that's throwing dung.

This is the type of project that might have gotten a $10 PDF pledge from me. But no electronic option means I can't really check it out unless I want to pay $57.

I've noticed an aversion to e-publishing from all the ex-GW folks. Warlord Games doesn't bother with electronic versions of any of their games. Mantic is an exception though, as they've always had free PDFs and now also sell PDFs of their finished copies.

I know it's hard for game designers to really get a grip on electronic publishing after having a lengthly stint at a company like GW that is just figuring out that the internet exists, but we live in a world of ereaders, tablets and laptops now.

I am also in the video, though seeing my ugly mug isn't what anyone is excited about for sure :-)
