Subject: Need advice on how to beat 18 Obliterators
Use MSU initiates with melta in a drop pod and infiltrating dual melta + powerfist sergeant command squads. The usual cyclone platforms aren't going to work, you need to get in close and ID them with melta and powerfists.

I'll be using templars, and typically i go with 3 land raiders, 3 units of termies and a couple of basic squads (which usually just hide in the land raiders). I think in a straigh fight i'd take them - the problem is getting up close and personal.
Anyone got any pointers? Anyone ran into this double force org monstrosity yet?
I mean absolutely zero offense, but isn't list-tailoring so that you win on a Video Batrep a little silly?

Cyclone terminators are going to do all right, they have ablative wounds and can instant kill the oblitz.
Now for a few reasons you'll probably have an ADL in a usual list, this is going to give a 4+ cover save.
If you want to include typhoons in the cyclone description then I want to be on the side with 18 typhoons against 18 obliterators.
I do agree Black templars can build a mean drop pod army, moreover this would be more interesting than fighting two gunlines against each other.

Fair point, but my opponent said to me that I should have a think about what to use in advance (which I assumed to mean. "change what youre using"). Im gonna have a chat with him about it pregame and see what hed prefer me to use - my regular list, or a different one.

Yeah, suppose if he both says "I'm fielding 18 oblits" and "think about your list" then a certain degree of tailoring is fair enough.
I still wouldn't go CRAZY on the tailoring; but definitely take into account the oblits when making the list-writeup.

Hey Guys, just in case anyone is interested, I pulled it off! I won on Purge the Alien. I ended up just using my regular list, and managing to make it across the table to smash the obilts in. My opponent deployed pretty aggressively, so I was able to start charging from turn 3 onwards. I lost one land raider in the first volley, but the turn 2 shooting phase only inflicted glancing hits and weapon destroyed results. That pretty much bought time for the terminators to get stuck into the Obliterators. I just ran my regular marines out of sight so that they didnt give away cheap kill points as well.
In all honesty I think I majorly lucked out with the land raiders not dying - but that just bought me the time i needed to get across the table. A lucky win, but i feel better for using my standard list and still managing to come out on top.
Big guns would have been a nightmare to play against this army!
The battle report for this will be featuring in my 50 Games in 50 weeks series - i've recorded several videos ahead, so this won't be up for a while yet - game 39. Stay tuned if you want to see it in person!

Congratulations, man. Whether you got lucky with the Land Raiders or not, you earned that win.

Wow, great job. I was wondering how on earth you would deal with 18 oblits. Especially with BT, I sure thought you had an uphill battle. It just goes to show that good players win, period. With the right moves, some luck, and capitalizing on your opponents mistakes, you can win with any list against any list. Great job and an inspiration!!

Ummm are you using the force organization chart on this one? Whats the point limit?
101 points for 5 crusaders a plasmagun and a lascannon... Feels cheaper than the 70+ points per gun they are paying while being incredibly vulnerable to instant death. Besides that you could always just have lots of scoring units and win the game like a rational human being instead of playing to beat his units. They ought to be pretty slow after all. Ummm... what else. yeah he's going to be getting at most like 4 shots per each of those 70 point guys so why don't you just flood the field? Better yet take some guard platoons.
Obliterators have a kinda long standing accolade as one of the things you needed for 5th edition. It was because chaos didn't have much in the way of reasonably price durable reach shooting, the army needed them and there was a lot of mech for them to kill and conditions that made plasma cannons pretty good, this is really no longer the case.
Last piece of advice, play the leadership game. If you can help him find his way off the board all the better.
... I guess I was late to the party!

Oblits are nice and versatile, but they are very expensive for a single shot lascannon.
Horde of space marine infantry probably won't work because he does have 18 plasma cannons too.
What you need to do is field AP2 weapons cheaper than he does. So you need to get more than one AP2 shot for 70 points to beat him.
Now that shouldn't be too hard with most lists. For instance, Chaos Space Marines could easily out-lascannon him with just havocs. I'm sure regular space marines can do the same thing.
Vindicators and predators probably won't work just because he has so much anti-tank. He can overwhelm those before they get off a shot.
Bikers, land speeders, las-plas razor backs. All that stuff would work great.
Land raiders actually aren't a bad platform against them. Lascannons struggle with AV14, and you are getting 2x twin linked lascannons for not a lot more than he is paying for three single shots.
If you can deliver an assault unit you should easily be able to beat the oblits in close combat. TH&SS would be the way to go since they are hitting back with power fists.

Eye on the prize. 5 of the 6 BRB games are scoring, and only one of those let's heavy support squads score. You have the other 4 games to YOUR advantage.
Kill his troops. That's it. Screw his obliterators. With 18 of them, he has to be running a double FOC, so that's 4 troops slots. Unless you're playing a 3000 point game, those squads are going to be either 10 man basic units or 5 man cult units. Either way, play to the mission, not his army. Kill the troops.

Build a balanced army, kill his troops and play for the objectives.
