Subject: Starting Infinity, having some questions what to buy....

As title says...
I'm starting Infinity but have absolutly no idea what to buy?
I want to start Yu jing and was planning to buy this (this is only because how the models look):
Standard Starterbox
Sectorial Starterbox
Tiger Soldiers (Combi, HMG)
Zhansi (HMG)
Ninja (Sniper)
Daofei (HMG)
Guilang (Sniper)
Hsien (HMG)
Ninja (Hacker)
Oniwaban (Shinobu)
I have absolutly no idea if this is a good starting point, I really don't want to buy the mini's I probably never use in a game.
People in my gaming group told me not to buy any Sectorial stuff as a starter because of the Link rule, does the normal Zhansi troopers don't have this rule? Isn't this a standard new Human Sphere rule that effects all troopers?
Is it not possible to play a normal Yujing armee (so no sectorial) and include mini's from the Sectorial Starterbox?

Im not a Yu jing playerso hopefully someone else can offer more help on your unit choice.
From my own experiance I would suggest that you start with a generic force and stay clear of the sectorials to start with. How it works is in the rule books units have a stat called AVA (availability ).So in a generic yu jing list you`ll find that you can bring any unit you wish but with limited numbers.
What a sectorial list does is change the ava of units so you can field a more themed force but what you will find is that you will not be able to use certain units. Also sectorial units do have the link team options but I have not found this to be any major advantage over a generic army.
Im a Pano player and I went for the military orders set first and I absolutly love them but there were so many other units that I wanted to use that a military order cannot field (mainly cloaky hackers , aquilla/swiss guard and tags ) and your tactics are more restricted due to the specialisation of the force. I wanted a bit more diversity to my force so in the end i bought generic units aswell can you can mix and match between the two forces its just the number of different unit types change.
Sorry if ive not been clear hope this helps /

I like your choice of models. Here is what I suggest. Use the Infinity Army builder through their website which is free, and start making a list with your selected units.
Find out how many points it would be. 300 is a standard tournament value, 100-250 for casual games.
I think you will find that you can only fit 1 or 2 HMGs or Snipers in a list at any given time, because of the SWC (Special Weapons Cost). You are allowed 1 SWC per 50 army points.
So in your fairly standard 200 point list you have 4 SWC.
There is a little check mark in the army builder which will check if your army is legal, and tell you what is wrong if there is a problem.
Work up some combinations with the models you think look cool until you get some legal army combinations. Then buy your stuff and play.

All of those models are usable. In fact, every model is usable in infinity. That said, you will never find a way to include all of those choices in the same list, but you will be able to, and most likely will, include them in different lists.
As previously stated, go fumble around with the army builder.
As to starting with a sectorial... don't listen to your friends.
All of the models in a sectorial are usable in a generic Yu Jing, so you can buy the sectorial starter and run a normal army. Or you can do as I did: I started with playing a sectorial. I got the Bakunin Sectorial starter and two more units and ran the Bakunin sectorial for Nomads... but I didn't use the Link Team rule.
The link team rule is a rule that allows you to form units of multiple models of the same type to get some bonuses.
But you can run a sectorial and not use the rule. I didn't use the rule until my 10th game or so. So it's no problem getting the sectorial!

Which sectorial box? JSA or Imperial Service (for the Emhprah!)
If Imperial Service look to include the Su-Jian and Kuang Shi - a Transformer and exploding prisoners, whats not to love
Link Teams: Only sectorial armies can have this rule (only applied to certain troops - states in Human Sphere and Army Builder which ones can) as sectorial/theme armies have restrictions on what they can take. For example the JSA can't take the Su-Jian, but the Imperial Service can't take the Karkuri (Japanese Fembots with lots of guns!)
The normal (Vanilla) Yu Jing has no such restrictions, but as a consequence do not get the option to use Link Teams.

Sorry, couldn't help myself!
Yu-Jing is the one faction I don't own any models for, oddly enough.
Though every day I am tempted to start a JSA force - damn those sexy motorcycles!

I think I can wait until the JSA Sectorial is released - I mean, I have enough Infinity stuff to last me until then (and beyond) as it is!

Oops!
I meant the Yu-Jing Svalarheima Sectorial - I know about the JSA one as it is the one that is currently tempting me to start collecting yet another Infinity army...

Something to bear in mind is that because of the small model count and the relatively dynamic nature of the game, Infinity is one of the few games where even if you buy models that you do not use immediately...you'll find a place for them down the road.
And having the option to field one of two Sectorial lists at some point down the road is nice. Automatically Appended Next Post: Alpharius wrote:

I will be supremely disappointed if you start a Yu-Jing Svalarheima Sectorial and finish it before a PanO Sectorial.
Just sayin' here, Alphy.

But you can run a sectorial and not use the rule. I didn't use the rule until my 10th game or so. So it's no problem getting the sectorial!
I can second this! Buy the sectorial by all means, but there is absolutely nothing at all to stop you using them in a standard force (and in fact, as the CF says, this is probably recommended until you have a basic grasp of the rules). In fact I did the same thing with the Hassassin Bahram sectorial for Haqqislam. That way you can include pretty much anything in your force.
