That model is fantastic. Great work on it. The neutral color scheme is very effective, but I don't think you would have been wrong to go with MotU colors, either.

Thanks! He was a fun model to paint, despite being resin-- a medium that I'm not really good with. The mount probably would have worked in more exotic colors, but green and red would have been a little too Christmasy, I think.
The theme for this month's Dakka Challenge is Footsloggers, as a follow-up to May's Nice Ride. I'm having a hard time deciding-- I have lots and lots of infantry models from various makers, but nothing has jumped out to me so far. For now, I'll be painting these Muster support troops from Alternative Armies:
and see how I feel about them. There is every chance that I will find something else interesting in that time, and do that instead.

Oh I do love a "simple" theme and footsloggers is a great idea. I have only once participated in the monthly challenge and got some amazing feedback from the wonderful community that runs it on my entry.
I would look for what is the most basic line infantry you have and paint them to the absolute advanced painting techniques that you can manage NMM, object source lighting etc. etc.

The Dakka Challenge is basically what is keeping me painting these days. For a variety of real-life reasons, I don't really have an opportunity to play any games, and I'm running out of space to store completed models, so having a smaller, focused project every month allows me to keep my hand in and try new and/or more advanced techniques.
Here are the Dudes With Rifles, all painted up:

They are pretty simple models, and I ended up sticking with pretty simple paintjobs for them. Maybe they'll see action someday.
I also painted up some ghouls from Bad Squiddo:
I got these in a Kickstarter from last year. There was a pretty quick turnaround from campaign to delivery, as almost always happens with Annie's projects. The models were hand sculpted in greenstuff, and as a result are kind of rough. The first model I painted was actually the naked rat, which inspired me to do them all in fleshy pink. Also, every model is, to some extent, anatomically correct, which I did not expect before I started the project.

The ghoul matriarch is resin rather than metal, but everything written above still applies. I can't unsee her Tactical Ghoul's junk, even though it doesn't show in the photos or assembled model.
Here they are all together:
To continue this month's theme (Footsloggers), I assembled a sprues-worth of Frostgrave Cultists:

The ghouls I think really capture an unpleasant creepiness that is often lacking in undead models in general. That one cradling the baby skeleton gives me the shivers.

Indeed. They make quite the contrast with my dag-faced ghouls from RAFM.

I can't say one way or another, but Annie (of Bad Squiddo) apparently has a thing for ghouls. All of her previous releases have been equally gross.

I painted these guys specifically for a scenario in Forbidden Psalm, a game set at the end of the world when everything is terrible. They'll fit right in.
I've been painting, but haven't taken any photos until now. First up, some Basilean scouts from Mantic:

Vanguard-era restic is easier to work with than earile KOW- or Deadzone-era restic, but still not a lot of fun. These came in a set of three, with two choices for heads and bow arms. I added a third head from the Frostgrave Soliders II sprue to add a little more variety.
I also painted up some Frostgrave Cultists:

I started these guys using my trademarked Paint Everything Brown technique, but added a little more color here and there. I'll probably enter these three:

in the painting comp. Finally, here are all five together:
Lastly (for this update), I pulled out Raging Annie, from Bad Squiddo:
The hair reminded me of Scarlett Johansen's wig in the first Avengers movie, and was originally planning to lean into that look. While doing the red hair, though, the image of Pippi Longstocking sprang to mind, and I decided to lean into that mismatched, colorful look instead. One stocking is orange to tie the model to the rest of my Ghosts of Gaia, everything else is just sort of colorful and fun. I'm quite proud of the machete. I may end up entering this model in the comp instead of the cultists.
Which do you think I should enter?

It's been hot, humid, and nasty since summer began, and while I haven't stopped hobbying, I have slowed down a bit. That said, I have managed to finish my entry for this month's Dakka Challenge: Beep Boop.
I bought this model a few years back, with the intention of using it for Gamma Wolves. It sat in the closet ever since, until this month's theme was chosen. I was originally going to paint a Dreadball team, but the models just didn't speak to me.
Assembly was pretty quick. The model is actually push-fit, but I glued everything anyway, out of habit. I even filled and filed to most visible seams, which I think is a first for me. When I bought the model, I didn't check the contents, and realized about halfway through assembly that the clear parts weren't in the box. I ended up cutting up some plastic from an old blister pack. I will ask you not to look to closely at the poor fit.
I thought about picking up some Tamiya paints at the local model shop, but then I remembered that I'm supposed to be spending less money and also that Tamiya paints dry up before I can use the whole bottle. I ended up breaking out the gouache paints I picked up for another Dakka Challenge a while back.
Here's the model, all finished:
I added some waterslide decals (that came with the model), but the weathering I applied over them was a little too good, making them essentially invisible. I'm just a little torn on the panel lines. They seem to be visible enough, but might benefit from a pin wash to pick them out a bit more. I'm reluctant to try, as I'm not really very experienced with pin-washes, and I don't want to spoil the work I've done so far.
I have a few Deadzone models in various stages of completion sitting on my painting station. I hope to be able to share them before the end of the month.

Glad you like it. It's 1/35 scale, so it's bigger than most of the models I paint, but with 40K scale creep, it might fit right in with GW stuff.

"Think Tank" mad me smile. I wasn't familiar with the Man-Kzin war, but it looks like something I should get into. I'm between books right now, so that's perfect timing!

A pin-wash is a scale modeler's technique for picking out panel lines, rivets, and such. I'm pretty sure you're supposed to use either enamel or oil washes and rely on capillary action. I'm not familiar with either medium, so I'm a little reluctant to try them on an essentially finished model.
Syro_ wrote:You did such a nice job on that walker Josh. I agree with the person (I think on the contest thread) who commented on how nice the canopy looks as well.
Thanks. This was my first ever attempt at sky-earth techniques, which is why the front canopy has so many layers. I will have to revisit this technique in the near future.

I like the Kafer. Painting it yellow, giving it a reflected-horizon canopy and doing it all with craft paints is impressive. For panel lining, have you tried Gundam Markers? There are two versions intended for panel lining. One is like a micron pen. The other has alcohol-based ink and uses capillary action to fill the panel lines. I think it's the "pour type" marker. However I've heard that this type might not play well with acrylic paint, so best to do a test piece first if you do try it out.

Gouache is not exactly craft paint-- "real" artists use it-- but it does behave a little differently than the acrylics I normally use. I have a couple of the micron pen-type Gundam markers, but I don't think they would have been a good fit for this model, as the panel lines are really, really shallow and I would probably end up going outside the lines. I'm not familiar with the other type you mention. I'll have to look into that.
