I'm just glad to see my tax money go to unbiased school officials.

Anyone else looking forward to the vice-presidential debate? Biden is bound to drop some golden quotes in that one.

I too am looking forward to it. Unfortunately in debate environments, Biden is much more constrained and controlled. I fear my funmeter will be low.

There are plenty of highly qualified people who would be terrible teachers. Having qualifications, knowledge and experience in fields unrelated to teaching does not automatically you will be good at teaching.

They had Democratic Party registration drives but refused Republicans. Neither party should be allowed in.
Everyone associated should be fired.

If you're too stupid to know how to register to vote on your own, you shouldn't be allowed to vote anyway.

Somehow I doubt this, "eh, fair enough," tack that OT's taking would have quite the same complexion had it been Republicans who gamed their way into a voter drive while Democrats were forbidden from doing the same.

Somehow.

Persecution complex? Hardly.

Both sides play extremely dirty. Any claims to the contrary are laughable.

So you are not implying that people are okay with it because Democrats did it?

So, a school somewhere didn't allow some people to vote and the Repubs are up in arms about it...

But the Repubs are trying to stop anyone without a driver's license ACROSS THE WHOLE COUNTRY from voting and they think that's fair and dandy?

And you claimed that if Republicans did that there would be an outrage and everybody would shift positions.

So: persecution complex.

Wouldn't I need to be a Republican to have a persecution complex?

Or, you know, not have that opinion reinforced by every political thread in this forum?

Screw popcorn for the debates, I'll just munch while you guys fight on here!

While I agree if one group gets to do something, they shouldn't bar the other group from doing the same thing-one group gets to discuss their party, so should the other. I don't see what the big deal would be about teachers discussing politics with students. Hell, when I was teaching if someone asked my political affiliation, I'd tell them I supported Obama and mention the good things he's done. I wouldn't sling mud at Romney in a professional location, but I sure as hell will in the privacy with friends mention how much of an asshat he is. You guys count as "friends," so I can say he's an asshat here.
Discussion, especially political discussion, is great in school: it encourages both planning ahead AND thinking on your feet, and forces students to think outside the box. That said, again, equal representation and all that. It's what our country was founded on. Supposedly. I'm sure women, blacks, and certain religious groups would have argued that point back in 1776 though.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

In 2000 we got bonus points for voting in our Government class, but other than facilitating in class discussion and mock debates the teachers didn't actively try to register people or push for certain candidates.

I seem to recall in my home state, somehow registering to vote was tied to registering for Selective Services.. It's been a long long while, so I have no idea if that is indeed true (well, at least it would be for men, since we're the only ones who have to do that)..

I agree that it was wrong of the Dems to "act" like they were from the county elections office.... If anything, the REAL county elections office should be allowed to set up in a gym, and let the seniors (who are about the only ones eligible to vote in the first place) go during a lunch period, or class or some such to register to vote. But, it would need to be strictly monitored by other vetted, outside people so that no shenanigans, like disallowing one party from registering, etc.

And that's good. Excellent even. It's when you're pushing your beliefs on your students that politics in the class room becomes a problem

How do you determine what is pushing beliefs and what isn't, is simply stating your political inclinations grounds for termination, what about correcting students when they use false information to support their candidate. Outside of a teacher directly saying "you should vote x" it's difficult to determine what is pushing beleifs

It was wrong to have allowed this; and it's foolish to suggest the way to rectify it would be to repeat the same mistake from the other direction.
