How much stuff do you have or plan on having? I have the GW figure case and a battlefoam shield bag and really like both. The figure case fits around 100 small infantry and my shield bag has a land raider(magnetized to remove guns), 6rhinos, 2 land speeders, 70+ small infantry 13 terminators, a thunderfire, and aegis with some room to spare. Both cost under 150$ usd total.

I keep hearing good things about KR multicase. They might be a bit cheaper also.

Generally speaking there are four options:

Battlefoam- the cadillac of the industry, they are almost universally considered the best case makers out there. They also have the price tag to go along with it. Their foam is rather rigid and I personally am not a fan of it, but many people love their products. They have a very large range of bags and products and do huge amounts of custom cuts. Their online custom foam creator is really top notch, though pricey. Definitely worth investing in if you have the money.
http://www.battlefoam.com/

KR Multicase- KR is probably the second biggest name in the industry. This is the only one that I personally own. They use a very soft foam and then place the foam in rigid cardstock boxes. I personally like this system as the boxes are standarized across their range, allowing you to simply have a box for each army that you swap out. The boxes themselves (filled with foam) are very economical, with the cases and bags being affordable as well. I would say these are best if you need to transport smaller armies, as I find it difficult to fit armies over about 1500 points into one box. They do a large amount of custom cuts, though they don't have the fancy pants program that battlefoam does.
http://www.krmulticase.com/

Sabol Cases- I have the least experience with this company, so I'm going to be brief. They seem to me to be a cheaper imitation of battlefoam. Their product is very similar to battlefoam's. They are inexpensive, but I am leary as to their ability to stand up. I hope someone else who has more experience with them can chime in on sabol.
http://www.saboldesigns.net/home.html

Games Workshop- GW does make a couple cases of their own. These are hard plastic "briefcases" that have several layers of foam in them. The foam is either grid style for infantry, or pluck foam for larger things. Most people find these cases to be of inferior quality to others. The hard plastic cases themselves seem to stand up well, however the foam is not very good. The cases are also expensive relative to their competitors. Overall, I would try to avoid these in light of their competitors, unless you can get them at a good discount.

Overall, definitely shop around. The products from each company all vary wildly different and hold advantages for everyone. If there is a store near you that sells cases, definitely go out and feel the foam, look at cases sizes, and options. This list is also not exclusive, and there are many other companies out there, these are just the big ones.

Make your own from a gun case and hobby foam; Much cheaper and efficient

I'll back up Battlefoam - if you want to spend the money. It's great for models with lots of spikey bits, since it doesn't 'hug' the models. Use their laser cut trays for an even better fit.

They're definitely expensive though.

I would stay away from gun cases these days. It might be cheaper and all but you're more likely to have your miniatures stollen that way because people thinking there's something else in there, like guns, instead of miniatures. Same goes for aluminum camera cases.

I've used Sabol's Army Transporters for a very long time and haven't had any problems with them standing up or with their durability. Also Battlefoam does make trays that fit in Sabol miniature bags so you can go that way as well.

You should keep your case out of plain view if you leave it in a car. People will smash your window if they see a GPS or iPhone cable loose of the off chance it's in the glovebox. I think you can order a Plano hand gun case for $19. I would be more worried about people (cops) thinking you have a weapon handy instead of a bunch of toy soldiers.

If you're a realty cheap bastard like me you should buy a bankers box and repurpose some egg crate foam. I can fit over 100 minis plus 3 rhino class tanks, 6 bikes a speeder and 2 dreads in one bankers box. For $15 it cost me it can't be beat buy a pro brand case. It's fine for schlepping around in my car. If your planning on traveling to tournaments, getting on a plane or public transportation, I would check out KR multicase. A couple of the podcasts I listen to have traveled with those cases on planes and even checked them through baggage with no problems. The seem to have cases of all materials and sizes to fit all budgets. Plus I really like that you can store all your minis in boxes and take what you need when you need it. That way you don't have to pack or unpack all your armies into the one case you own. My wife has been on at me about my minis and how they need to be stored out of the way. I wanted a glass display case, she wasn't too hot on that idea. If I get KR's cardboard inner cases I could store all my guys in a cupboard out of the way.

I like KR so apparently does this guy who says everything that I would want to.

It is tricky to get your head around at first, although thier latest guides may prove a bit better.

http://krmulticase.com/resources/customtrayguides.aspx

For me as Orks I know that boys fit in f3H's (18 per half tray, 6 half trays to a box) Burnas lootas and heavy weaons are better in D3H's (15 per half tray, 6 half trays to a box) - the bikes ought to go in D2h's at 10 per half tray, but they are OK in d3H's. I have my black reach coptas 6 in a v5H (d3h fits on top and takes up half the box).

2 quick tips
- 3s and 5s go together (thirds and two thirds), 2s and 4s go together (halves and quarters), and 1s can go with either group
- get half trays (H's) rather than full trays (Ts) where you can so that the contents are more flexible

The most useful thing as far as I am concerned is that you have the cardboard boxes full of foam stacked away and labled, and then pull out the right couple of boxes for the game and put them in a backpack to go.

I've used a Sabol for years as well and it holds up just fine, even the few trays that I've torn bits out from, then changed my mind, glued pieces back in, and tore out different ones. There's nothing wrong with the things. I've heard good things about Battlefoam, but I recall a forum post from the guy that runs it back when Space Hulk was released where he was a bit of a dick to someone who was saying that his product was too expensive. Never really cared to give the guy my money after that.

What is the budget we're talking about here?

Do many people use magnetised trays for transport and storage of 40k minis instead of foam? Shifting 20 minis at once on a tray rather than putting each one in foam individually, and getting it out again seems annoying, especially as a (mainly foot) guard player.

Battlefoam always do a 25% off black friday sale. Of course, you do end up with a long wait for your order, because there's a huge rush.

That'll get you up to about a pack 720 from Battlefoam. If you stick with pluck foam (basically, the foam doesn't have precut holes - you pull out 1cmx1cm square sections to make your own spaces) $150 will get a pack 720 full of pluck foam. Holds 14" of foam, though if that's enough depends on your army (my Tyranids are strapped for space in a 1520xl, which has 21" of foam space).

I'm going to throw my lot in for KR. The cases are modular, so if you find you end up needing more than you ordered you can use multiple cases at once. I have a Kaiser 2 which is a bag that holds two card cases for my Eldar with a fwe of their custom trays, and a separate card case for my Khador (Warmachine) stuff.

Their website definitely is almost impossible to use at first, but their customer support is great. If you send them an email asking for help or tell you what you want to transport, they'll give some recommendations for what cases and trays to go with. The bag itself has a bunch of pockets and pouches for rulebooks, codexes, dice, tape measures, etc. Big +1 from me.

Also, they're relatively cheap for what you get, especially compared to Battlefoam.

I am a huge fan of TableWar. They offer cases that allow magnetized bases to sit within slotted trays for easy and convenient loading and removal. They do run a bit expensive with the smallest beginning at $125 and then you still need to purchase the trays and magnets which will probably bring your total assuredly past $150 but you hopefully you have been extra nice to your girlfriend so she will be kind to you on your birthday.

I believe a fellow member posted a review of the case when they were right about to be released and he goes into greater detail then I possibly could and he has a nice video to boot. Here is the link http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/0/394542.page

What army are you running - and how much have you to store - all of us who know the individual systems could then come up with an option for you to pick from.

Are you intending to use it to store the minis or also use it to take to game stores/ other locations/ tournaments - do you want to use it to put the minis on display.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Model_Case_Reviews_and_Recommendations

will also cover any points this thread has missed.

http://www.krmulticase.com/trays.aspx?type=L&showsets=Y&system=WHBOX&army=DKVN&d=1

should be enough then? (or close to being enough)

so I would recommend one of the following options

a) dark vengence in a backpack 1 $131
b) dark vengence in cardboard and an empty backpack 2 $137
c) dark vengence in cardboard and an empty kaiser 2 $127
d) just get the dark vengence in cardboard, so you can work out what to get next $55

Depends whether you need to carry it around lots or not - I play orks so I have a backpack 2, but all my sons space marines and space wolves fit in a single case.

Personally I've used Sabols Army Transports with pick-and-pluck foam inserts. It's okay, far better than the old GW cases for example and they offer trays up to 4" high, but I've been thinking about changing to something "better" as the pick-and-pluck doesn't really work that well when you have spikes or long blades in different poses.

I got really interested in that Tablewar, unfortunately it looks like they don't ship to Europe.

It's looking like battle foam or kr I'm thinking table war may just be too expensive but it's what I really want, I love the whole Concept of it
