So I'm anticipating having to go up against a 2k DE venom spam list at my local FLGS's three month campaign. I'm spamming 5x10 man GKSS (2xpsycannon, psybolt, hammer), three DK (sword, flamer) and an inquisitor (in TA, servo-skulls, communion). I'm really concerned all of that dakka from the 9 venoms will really clean my clock on the first turn. What do other GK players do? My only options is to do one of two things (that I can think of).

Option #1: Stuff two of the GKSS units + the inquisitor into a ruin and combat squad the other 3 units and reserve them along with the DKs. That leaves the two 10 man units to try and with stand an ungodly amount of shooting. Then on turn 2, if there is one, I hope the communion powers of the inquisitor brings everyone in. I'll have three servo-skulls on the board that I'll put out of range so if he want to take out the skulls he won't be in range of my dudes on turn 1 - if I can arrange it that way. In any case I DS in on turn two with the 6x5 man squads and three dreads and hope I don't mishap at all - like that's going to happen. And proceed to shoot down the venoms leaving the DKs to flame at least three units worth of occupants.

Option #2: Combat squad four of the units but not the HQs unit and stand there and take it (reserving the DKs).

Don't really like either option. Hence why I'm here...

Step 1) If you have Rhinos and go second, stay inside for Turn 1. Venoms won't do squat to AV11.

Step 2) Then hop out and mow then down with Str5 psybolts.

If you go first, skip to step 2.

GKs are the hard counter to AV10 spam as even our basic marine can destroy an AV10 vehicle with his Psybolts.

Yeah, I was thinking rhinos, too. Can the occupants shoot if he moves more than 6"? Don't have the brb in front of me. I know he throws a blaster in each unit that rides along. The only monkey wrench, though, is that the HQ is in TA - I guess I could drop that so he could fit.

Yes,

If the vehicle was stationary, the passangers count as having remained stationary.

If the vehicle moved at Combat speed, they count as having moved.

If the vehicle moved at Cruising Speed, they can only make Snap Shots

They cannot fire if the vehicle moves Flat Out.

So if they move 6", they can fire as if they moved.

If they move 12", they can only fire Snap Shots.

If they move flat out, they can't shoot at all.

So you should be safe on turn 1 as being a Fast Skimmer doesn't increase your Combat speed above 6"

Well your in luck! Im a de player and used venom spam for a while with great success against my best friend who is a gk player, until he used a list that totally reversed the roles. we play at 1500pts so youll have to add some stuff:

HQ

Corteaz ( forgive me if thats the wrong guy but he used whoever it is that makes purifiers troops)

Troops

4×6 purifiers- 2 psycannons all in razorbacks with heavy bolter + psybolts

Heavy support

3 dreads- dual autocannons w/ psybolts

when i fought him he did get the first turn, which might of made a little bit of a difference, how much of a difference I dont know. all he did was put the dreads behind the razorbacks which gave them cover, and then unloaded everything into my venoms. Im a little fuzzy on details but i think he blew up like 6 out of my 8 venoms turn one. The amount of split fire he had between the purifiers, dreads, and razorbacks was insane! once you get de out of their vehicles their as good as dead and the best way to do that is a mass amount of fire against our paper airplanes. hope this helped

Yep gk can be nearly impossible for venom spam to beat, psyfleman dreads are not fun for DE to deal with! I lost to an army with 4 of them at the x legion... Take out the ravages heavy support first then pop the venoms it should be an easy game for you.

Tournament Results:

Throne of Skulls (Jan 2012) 5/0/0
X Legion (Feb 2012) 3/1/2 13/40
6th ed score: (15/2/3)
Chaos New Codex: (9/2/1)
Dark Eldar & GK: (0/0/0)

Just be sure to have some Psyflemen Dreads or Razorbacks; while even Strikes can blow a Venom away with ease, the Venom can do the same right back if you are out in the open for too long.

My current list is pretty foot sloggy in nature. I meched up with rhinos and ended up having to drop a DK and switch out my inquisitor in TA for an inquisitor in PA. I chose the rhinos because I'm running 10 man squads. I guess switching to 5 man squads and razors would give me enough points to get the DK back and some vendreads...

Oh also your deffinately not gonna want to bring DK's against DE, especially if he's running venom spam, because every single ranged weapon for the de are either poisoned or S8 AP2 and venom spam is designed to spam a ridiculous amount of both, which means whatever wont be wounding the DK's on 4+ will be wounding them on 2+ and negating their save. Every time my friend tried running DK's against my de they would always die the first or second turn without even directing that much fire power against them. Hope I helped in time and good luck!

You want small squads in razorbacks with psyheavybolters flanked by psyrifleman.

inquisitor with some pykic powers and you are golden.

dont worry about combat, a venom spam list isnt going to try and get into combat. Keep your forces concentrated so he doesnt charge in a haywire grenade your parking lot to bits.

Use the psyriflemen to hit the far away targets while driving the psybacks forward to hit the close targets.

Corrected that for ya.

As for your issue OP, if you need to tailor to win, go ahead. It won't make you a better player.

And posting random crap that adds nothing to the thread doesn't make you a better poster. If you weren't here just to troll the OP and stopped to think about it, list tailoring doesn't make someone a worse player, as it is still an exercise in list building; knowing how to counter each enemy army is key to competitive play, and building them individually first is a good stepping stone to working up to a good TAC list.
